1.
What is Social
Control?
2.
3 Types of Social
Control
Social Control
Defined as any systematic means and practices used to maintain
norms, rules, and laws; regulate conflict; and discourage deviant
behavior.
Sanctions
Most members of society follow
norms without conscious thought.
However, not everyone internalizes
all of society’s norms. Some
people must be motivated by
sanctions. These are rewards or
punishments used to enforce
conformity to norms.
3.
Two Types of
Sanctions
Formal And Informal
SAnctions
Formal Sanctions
A formal sanction is a reward or punishment
given by a formal organization or regulatory
agency, such as a school, business, or
government. Negative formal sanctions include
low grades, suspension from school, termination
from a job, fines, and imprisonment. Graduation
certificates, pay raises, promotions, awards, and
medals are examples of positive formal
sanctions.
Informal Sanctions
✘An informal
sanction is a
spontaneous
expression of approval
is a positive informal
sanction or disapproval
is a negative informal
sanction given by an
individual or a group..
Formal and Informal Sanction
Formal Sanctions – are those provided for by laws and other regulations
in society. Laws formally designate certain deviant behaviors as crimes,
and prescribe sanctions for such acts. Each society has its own set of
definitions regarding crime and the appropriate sanctions to be
applied.
Informal Sanctions – are most commonly imposed by smaller societies,
communities, or groups. There are no set laws or regulations that define
the nature of these sanctions, and these are often arbitrarily agreed
upon by members of the group or society.
Ex: social stigma, and gossip.
Social stigma – a stigmatized person still remains within society but is
subject to isolation and rejection by other members of society.
Gossip – considered as another way of imposing informal sanctions.

sanction.
Identify what type of sanction is being described in different
societal issues below.
○Mr. S filed a case against his customer due to it’s non-
paying of debt.
○Amboy was ostracized because of non-conforming to
societal norms.
○Echegaray was convicted and killed using death penalty.
○You are always experiencing gossip because of something
you’ve done wrong to your friend.
○You are arrested due to a rape and drug case.
Assignment:
○Watch the short French film, Majorite Opprime (Majority Oppressed).
Refer to this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4UWxlVvT1A .
Discuss the following guide questions after the film viewing.
1. What are the norms in this particular society?
2. How are norms and social control enforced in this type of society?
3. What are the punishments for deviant behavior?
4. What type of compliance does the protagonist exhibit? Did he exhibit
deviant behavior?
See you next meeting .
Good Day to all of us!
