A web log or blog is an online journal that a user creates using services like blogger.com or livejournal.com. It is like creating a web page, but it is much easier for users to update. This presentation discusses the strengths and weaknesses of blogs in an educational setting, the kind of instruction used to get the students started, the use of rubrics and other practices used for blogging in a community college English class. I have used blogs in two sections of English 2 (composition and critical thinking) at Hartnell College in Salinas, CA with a student population that had a low rate of computer literacy. Most of the students had minimal word processing skills, new a little about navigating the internet, and how to use their e-mail accounts. The advanced preparation for this class contributed to the successful use of blogs in these classes.
