Group 1: seek and ask.
18. Magic glasses
• You will be given a pair of 3d glasses + a
character role card.
• Go out and walk around school wearing
these glasses, get in to your new role.

space, how does it change your view?
• When you come back, be prepared to
discuss your feelings in this different role.
23. New Priory School
• You have the chance to impact on the future of
this school
• Make a design plan for how Priory could be
improved for the future….think about what
different groups of people want, need, etc.
• This will eventually be turned into a digital plan
of the school and can be shared with the
architects
Explore your spaces, make your places. Make your mark.
Discuss what a space explorer is, idea of exploring any spaces around you and seeing in a new light.
Mini people dolls/lego people/mini dolls. Students go around school with the little people and have to find places/spaces that are comfortable or uncomfortable for those people. Idea of perspective, seeing space in new way. How did it make you think about the place differently? They then interview each other about why these spaces are good.
Zoom in – can you see the little person?
There he is!
Split group in half. One half go find a place in the school that makes them feel happy, that they enjoy. The other half wait inside, then find the rest and interview them about why they chose that space. Justify. Then swap, other half go out and choose a space except this time they choose a space that makes them feel unhappy, that they do not enjoy. Others then go ‘ask’.
Come back to room, discuss what spaces you chose and why. How did you decide where you like and dislike. In pairs, make A3 sheet of likes and dislikes of a place. E.g. peace, warmth, litter, noise, etc.
Discuss different groups. In pairs, make A4 spidergram of different groups of people within a school. Try to get them to avoid prejudices and stereotypes. Try to subdivide groups, e.g. students > GCSE vs KS3 > ethnic groups > etc.
Students to be given pair of card 3d glasses and a role to play. Go out in to school and walk around wearing these glasses and your new role. Imagine being a different person in this space, how does it change your view. Roles could include: teacher, headteacher, ethnic group, blind, disabled, autistic, parent, year 6 student, artist, architect, businessman, year 11 student, etc. Come back and discuss your feelings in this different role.
Discuss, what do we want from a school. Can allow bit of creative freedom now. What about what different groups need and want?
Link to UN convention of human rights….i.e. you have the right to a safe and secure place, to access to water and hygiene….so dodgy toilets with no locks and flushes where you feel unsafe because of smoking is actually a violation
Each student given red+green pen, A4 google/Bing map/google earth image, and an A3 piece of paper. Spend 30mins annotating the map with all the positive and negatives of Priory. Must explain decisions, e.g. what I like about the tennis centre is the shape/style/quality of courts, etc.
