5. The Colosseum - the greatest amphitheatre of the antiquity - was built in Rome, Italy, about 1920 years ago. It is considered an architectural and engineering wonder, and remains as a standing proof of both the grandeur and the cruelty of the Roman world. After the splendour of imperial times, the Colosseum was abandoned, and in turn it became a fortress for the medieval clans of the city, a source of building materials, a picturesque scenery for painters, a place of Christian worship. 7. Machu Picchu – "Old Peaks" is a pre-Columbian 15th-century Inca site located 2,430 metres above sea level . It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru , which is 80 kilometres northwest of Cusco and through which the Urubamba River flows. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti , Often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas." Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls . Its three primary buildings are the Intihuatana , the Temple of the Sun , and the Room of the Three Windows .
