5. The images on my preliminary
task are scarce with there being
no images of my own at all on the
contents page. The image on my
front cover was very poorly lit and
the framing of the image is also
very bad having too much space
at the top and many features
during the photography were not
well planned such as mise en
scene.
Whereas in my final production
the images are much better lit
and I spent time planning the
images I wanted to achieve (eg.
mise en scene, positioning,
lighting etc.) The pictures
themselves are also of better
quality due to learning about
camera features such as ISO
and aperture. I also learned
how to edit images using
Photoshop to change features
such as contrast, brightness
and saturation which had a big
impact on my images, also
learned how to edit images
blemishing out marks ect. I
used a variety of images in my
final production which was
another aspect I wanted to
improve upon.
PROGRESSION AND LEARNING - IMAGES
6. The complexity of my layout is
another feature I wanted to
change and I feel that it has
dramatically improved from my
preliminary task to my final
product this is due to learning
about how to layer on
Photoshop. The research I
conducted from existing
magazines and my focus group
also helped me decide to use
columns in the contents page,
instead of just lists as I did in
my preliminary task with
thumbnail pictures ladled with
numbers and have 3 columns of
text in my double page spread
rather than 2.
PROGRESSION AND LEARNING - LAYOUT
7. In regards to the font I have still used
serif fonts as in my research
magazines, such as Q magazine still
used serif fonts even though it was
challenging the convention of sans serif
fonts. My focus group also preferred the
serif font as it was different and fitted
with the house style and theme of my
indie magazine. I used Photoshop to
edit the font height, width and spacing
of letters which allowed me to alter the
fonts effectively, I altered these
features to ensure that the text was
easy to read, it also allows there to be
a distinct separation between features,
masthead and anchor text. I also
learned how to add a drop shadow to
my text to create variation and allow it
to be more prominent on the page.
PROGRESSION AND LEARNING - TEXT
8. My final production was heightened in quality due to the
skills and techniques that I learned from the progression
from my preliminary task to the final outcome. These
included using lighting to enhance images, how to use the
manual settings on a digital camera, meant that I could take
much better photographs for my final production of my
compared to the photographs I used in the preliminary task. I
also learnt to use these features through tutorials and
research. Other factors such as conducting research into
codes and conventions, consistency in colours, fonts and
learning how to use the software on Photoshop to its full
extent allowed me to produce a quality product which could
not have been achieved if I had not learnt about and used
these aspects.
