3. Duke Homestead You can see that the early factories and farms where Washington Duke first grew and processed tobacco. Later his son founded the largest tobacco company. The worlds largest tobacco company. Also Duke and others helped create a market. Many profits were invested in industries and land, but others were used differently.

5. Alamance Battle Ground In 1771, an armed rebellion of backcountry farmers called regulators battled with governor William Tryson’s militia. Throughout the rebellion the regulators were crushed. A few years later their tactics became a model for their colonists fighting.
7. Bennett Place This simple farm house is situated between confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston headquarters in Greensboro and Union Gen. William T. Sherman’s in Raleigh. In 1865, the two commanders met at the Bennett Place.
