Garret Nolen Van Gogh

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. Today we’re going to take a look at a Vincent Van Gogh and some paintings from his career.
  2. So what is post impressionalism? It is an art style that incorporates the thick application of vivid colors using very distinctive brush strokes. They also tend to focus on real life subject matter as seen in the picture. Can anyone tell me what they see? Describe it… It shows a man (probably a farmer) working in the fields outside of town. It uses bright yellows and blues. How does this make you feel?
  3. I bet you wouldn’t have guessed, but this was one of Van Gogh’s earliest paintings called the potato eaters….does this look like an example of Post-impressionalism? Why or why not? What’s differen’t? What feeling does it give off? (dark colors= melancholy/somber feeling, sharply lit to focus attention…no brushstrokes)
  4. As you could probably tell from the last picture, van gogh wasn’t a big success. This caused him to want to reinvent himself. He chose to travel to Paris France to acquaint himself with Monet, Pissaro, and Goughlin in order to adapt his art style. As you can tell his color palette lightened and he started to develop the art style that everyone is familiar with. REAL QUICK: Is this a post impressionalist painting? YES
  5. Van gogh suffered a mental illness in 1888 which affected his paintings. He couldn’t paint for long periods of time because he suffered attacks. During this time he produced starry night, his most popular work. Swirling lines=mental state…bright colors and short brush strokes….Is this an example of post impressionalism? YES
  6. At the end of his life, van gogh believed his life was a failure. On july 27, 1890 at the age of 37 he committed suicide. After his death his fame grew enormously. He has been a major influence on art then and now.
  7. After listening to this lesson, which post impressionalist painting was your favorite? BE CAREFUL! ONE OF THEM ISN’T AN EXAMPLE OF THIS!
