1. Survival Chinese

Course Description:
The purpose of the 9-week Survival Chinese course is to teach you the listening and
speaking skills needed to communicatively function in commonly encountered situations
while travelling to China. You will develop your Chinese listening and speaking skills
through role-plays, listening exercises, and tasks. Attention will be focused on your use of
pronunciation, tones, phrases, and vocabulary words so you will sound comprehensible to
Native Chinese speakers. You will also learn how to work cooperatively with each other
and give each other feedback while performing each activity and task. It's mandatory that
every that you come to class on time and motivated to communicate in Chinese with your
peers.

Goals:
By the end of the course students should be able to:
• Utilize listening and speaking skills transferable to commonly encountered
situations in China.
• Gain an awareness of the social conventions in Chinese culture.
• Feel confident to take risk communicate cooperatively with each other.
• Students will be able to resolve gaps with native Chinese speakers in the target
language.
