This will definitely be an interesting duel, between two great smartphones, of two different
backgrounds. Presenting to you the Lumia 800 - the company's first Windows Phone smartphone
and the pride and joy of Nokia. This flagship relies heavily on Nokia's famed built quality, a great
OS from Microsoft and some Carl Zeiss magic, in order to take a big chunk out of today's market.
The other competitor we've thrown into the arena is without doubt a worthy adversary - Motorola
RAZR XT910 shows up with a thin, ultra-cool design and its dual-core power to show everyone
why Android is number one. Let's not waste any more time and jump straight to business.
The first round refers to the form and built aspects and we can tell straight away that it's going to
be hard to find a winner. Here are the measurements - Nokia Lumia 800 - 116.5 x 61.2 x 12.1 mm,
142 g - Motorola RAZR - 130.7 x 68.9 x 7.1 mm, 127 g. Both manufacturers know how to put
together a long-lasting and easy on the eye device and it's the same case with the two handsets in
question. The Lumia 800 gives you certain balance and comfort feeling when holding in your hand,
while also having a great looking polycarbonate chassis which also works as a protection in case
the phone is dropped. The Moto RAZR is equally durable and shares pretty much the same
premium elements as Nokia's flagship. The one thing that totally makes it different is the 7.1mm
thick body which can either prove to be an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on the
customer's choice. Both handsets feature Gorilla Glass, meaning that there's no chance of
damage coming from your keys, coins or whatever sharp objects you carry around in your pocket.
As we mentioned, it's a tricky round, and we can't declare anything else than a draw.
Display: our second round focuses on what these two smartphones have to offer in terms of their
screen technology. The one on the RAZR is really impressive - a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus
screen operating at a resolution of 540 x 960 while offering a pixel density of 256PPI. On the other
hand, the Lumia 800 is trying to keep up, using a 3.7 inch AMOLED screen which runs at 480 x
800 and boosts a pixel density of 252PPI. We love the AMOLED screens on both of them, the
power demand is low, the colors are vivid and everything truly looks great. However, the Super
AMOLED screen on Motorola's RAZR proved to be brighter, demanding less power and offering
better sunlight legibility, helping the Android handset to clearly win this round.
Power - although the Nokia Lumia 800 relies on a single core CPU, namely the Scorpion 1.4GHz,
it proves to be really impressive. The Snapdragon chipset also has a great performer in the
Adreno 205 GPU, which will come in handy when you're undergoing lots of tasks simultaneously.
On the downside, the WP device only has a standard 512MB of RAM which is not even decent.
The RAZR XT910 features a 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU, which is far better than the one on
the Lumia. Furthermore, it also has PowerVR SGX540 graphics and 1GB of RAM, making it very
easy for us to choose. This round goes to the RAZR.
2. The camera department should really be a place where the Lumia 800 can feel like home. That's
due to Nokia's longtime relationship with Carl Zeiss, which is also present for Lumia's 8 megapixel
camera, which includes auto-focus, dual-LED flash, 720p movie capture and geo-tagging. We
admit, it has the capability to take some great pictures, but it also has some flaws which the RAZR
doesn't have. For example, it can prove to be really slow to focus and it also falls flat when trying
to snap impromptu shots. The camera on the RAZR is yet another 8MP but offer a more solid
performance. It features LED-flash, touch-focus, face detection, geo-tagging, image stabilization
and 1080P video capture. To top it off, Moto's handset also offer a 1.3MP front-facing camera,
enabling you to video chat on the go, and making the handset a clear winner of yet another round.
The software part is really difficult to analyze, but we're going to do our best. As you surely know,
the Lumia 800 runs on the latest Windows Phone 7.5 platform, which proves to be a surprisingly
good OS. Not only does it have a solid foundation, but it also offers goodies such as multitasking,
Internet Explorer 9, a universal inbox which brings all of your email accounts together, threaded
message support and many others. What about apps you ask?! Not to worry, all you have to do is
access the Windows Phone Marketplace and get all the apps you could possibly want. Android 2.3
Gingerbread is the OS that makes the Motorola RAZR run so smooth. It features dozens of
elements which made this Android version so popular, as well as allowing the user plenty of room
customization and improvement. The Android Market is the place where you'll find hundreds of
desired apps. Alongside this nice Android foundation, Motorola brings some unique customization
to the table which is also welcomed. Deciding on which OS is better really represents an
impossible task, because it's hard to establish a universal pattern which pleases users. The good
news is that both devices are fast and really easy to use, so no one should mind if we call this one
a draw.
To start off our conclusion, we must say what a good smartphone the Lumia 800 is. It really shows
that Nokia is moving in the right direction and we can only hope that their handsets will become
better and better. However, the Motorola RAZR XT910 won more rounds and on the whole,
represents a smarter choice. It's slim, light and reaches blazing fast speeds thanks to its dual-core
engine. No matter what handset you will choose in the end, rest assured that you made a good
choice, since both devices are one of the best on the market. For more options when choosing the
