Vitamins and Supplements, Market Characteristics
Vitamins and dietary supplements are non-drug and non-hormone based products that can be
consumed orally in the form of pills, powders, liquids or injected intravenously.
Their function is to supplement the diet, affording consumers’ added nutritional value to
maximize the quantity of beneficial elements in their diet, including amino and fatty acids,
vitamins, minerals and fiber. Vitamin deficiency can cause fatigue, poor memory function,
depression and connective tissue defects.
In general vitamins and supplements are bought independently by end consumers. In some
countries, however, they are sponsored or reimbursed by governments. Hospitals, nursing
homes and some schools bulk purchase the products for distribution to their end users.
Vitamins and supplements are generally ingested in tablet form. Powders to be mixed with
water or milk are also common forms of supplements. Intravenous ingestion is also possible.
Vitamins and supplements are available over the counter in almost all countries. They are
generally sold through grocery shops, supermarkets, pharmacies and drug stores, as well as
through direct sales channels and online.
The value chain for the vitamins and supplements market begins with the raw materials.
Vitamins can be derived from plant or animal products, or produced synthetically in a
laboratory; commercial vitamins are generally synthetic. Generally a distributor buys purified
vitamins and minerals and sells them to a manufacturer. Other materials, such as coatings and
flavorings are also often added at this stage. Microcrystalline cellulose, lactose and calcium are
often added as fillers. Magnesium stearate or stearic acid is sometimes added as a lubricant,
and silicon dioxide as a flow agent. The substances are then mixed and formed into tablets or
powders and packaged for sale. They are then distributed to wholesalers and finally to retailers.
