"Rio+20" is the short name for the United Nations
Conference on Sustainable Development which took
place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 2012
3. At the Rio+20 Conference, world leaders, along
with thousands of participants from the private
sector, NGOs and other groups, came together to shape
how we can reduce poverty, advance social equity and
ensure environmental protection on an ever more
crowded planet.
4. "Rio+20 has given us a solid platform to build on. And it
has given us the tools to build with. The work starts
now"
5. Why is Rio+20 important?
The world today has 7 billion people – by 2050, there
will be 9 billion.
One out of every five people – 1.4 billion – currently
lives on $1.25 a day or less.
A billion and half people in the world don’t have access
to electricity.
6. Two and a half billion people don’t have a toilet.
Almost a billion people go hungry every day.
Greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, and more
than a third of all known species could go extinct if
climate change continues unchecked.
7. What is Sustainability?
Sustainability creates and maintains the
conditions under which humans and nature can exist in
productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the
social, economic and other requirements of present and
future generations.
9. What does WWF do?
WWF's mission is to stop the degradation of our
