App Prototype

• Prototype of Map App to help you get around
UNM.
• The app is called LoboScent.
• Using the camera on your phone, in a virtual
reality format, arrows and messages will appear
giving you direction to your desired location.
• Green means go, and red indicates to proceed
with caution and displays a message below the
viewfinder.
• Call outs will appear as flags to provide ”nice to
know” information like links to the Where’s My
Bus website and also callouts when there is a
bathroom in the viewfinder. Proceed forward toward the

Activities #52 and #53
Overall, this project took about five hours, although thinking about what to do took longer. I was at UNM and looking through the book called Creative Workshop-80
Challenges to Sharpen Your Design Skills. I looked at several and was trying to imagine how I could be original in the idea. I came across an activity called Wacky Vendo, where
you overlay an image of a new-age vending machine on photos from around the city. The activity following that is called Excuse Me I’m Lost, where the objective is to come
up with a way to help people get around with the use of signs. As I was imagining this, I thought about the cost to redesign signs and how an app could resolve this issue by
giving the user a virtual experience using the camera on their phone.
When I started designing, I thought it would be cool to use Adobe Edge Animate to make something, but then I remembered learning about prototyping and the importance
of prototyping, especially in design. So I decided that I would design it all on PowerPoint and then upload it to SlideShare to share it with the class.
During the process of design, I thought about Value Adds that could be included on the app, and I thought about flags that provided points or information of interest, that
could also bring in revenue. Not advertising but a hybrid of advertising and nice to know information. For example, I included a flag on the first slide that has a flag to point
you to the app where you can pay for parking, or by the student bus stop where you can download the link for “Where is my bus.” In addition, safety came to mind, since the
user would be looking down at the phone screen to see where they need to go. In the design when a caution would come up the arrow would turn red indicating precaution,
so the user will read the message below the viewfinder to be cautious before proceeding. The final feature I thought would be great to have was a feature to solicit survey’s
when dealing with different departments. Basically, once you arrive to the location and if the location is soliciting surveys, then a pop up would appear to ask you to take a
brief customer experience survey after you interact with the department. In the case of my prototype it would be the Academic Tech Services department. Any department or
location interested in feedback could utilize this app as a way of finding the people to get feedback.
The part where I failed in this whole design was getting started. Ever since I saw the assignment I kept trying to figure out what I would create, but it never came into fruition.
I decided that I needed a starting point, so I started taking pictures of my path for the prototype. This provided me with the momentum necessary to continue and complete
the project. In the end, I was able to break down the millions of thoughts I had into creating this prototype with very specific features. How cool would it be to have an app
like this for UNM that guides you around campus in a virtual reality way?

  • 2. • Prototype of Map App to help you get around UNM. • The app is called LoboScent. • Using the camera on your phone, in a virtual reality format, arrows and messages will appear giving you direction to your desired location. • Green means go, and red indicates to proceed with caution and displays a message below the viewfinder. • Call outs will appear as flags to provide ”nice to know” information like links to the Where’s My Bus website and also callouts when there is a bathroom in the viewfinder.   • 32. Overall, this project took about five hours, although thinking about what to do took longer. I was at UNM and looking through the book called Creative Workshop-80 Challenges to Sharpen Your Design Skills. I looked at several and was trying to imagine how I could be original in the idea. I came across an activity called Wacky Vendo, where you overlay an image of a new-age vending machine on photos from around the city. The activity following that is called Excuse Me I’m Lost, where the objective is to come up with a way to help people get around with the use of signs. As I was imagining this, I thought about the cost to redesign signs and how an app could resolve this issue by giving the user a virtual experience using the camera on their phone. When I started designing, I thought it would be cool to use Adobe Edge Animate to make something, but then I remembered learning about prototyping and the importance of prototyping, especially in design. So I decided that I would design it all on PowerPoint and then upload it to SlideShare to share it with the class. During the process of design, I thought about Value Adds that could be included on the app, and I thought about flags that provided points or information of interest, that could also bring in revenue. Not advertising but a hybrid of advertising and nice to know information. For example, I included a flag on the first slide that has a flag to point you to the app where you can pay for parking, or by the student bus stop where you can download the link for “Where is my bus.” In addition, safety came to mind, since the user would be looking down at the phone screen to see where they need to go. In the design when a caution would come up the arrow would turn red indicating precaution, so the user will read the message below the viewfinder to be cautious before proceeding. The final feature I thought would be great to have was a feature to solicit survey’s when dealing with different departments. Basically, once you arrive to the location and if the location is soliciting surveys, then a pop up would appear to ask you to take a brief customer experience survey after you interact with the department. In the case of my prototype it would be the Academic Tech Services department. Any department or location interested in feedback could utilize this app as a way of finding the people to get feedback. The part where I failed in this whole design was getting started. Ever since I saw the assignment I kept trying to figure out what I would create, but it never came into fruition. I decided that I needed a starting point, so I started taking pictures of my path for the prototype. This provided me with the momentum necessary to continue and complete the project. In the end, I was able to break down the millions of thoughts I had into creating this prototype with very specific features. How cool would it be to have an app like this for UNM that guides you around campus in a virtual reality way?
