Bold Idea: The presentation proposes a bold idea for temporary and permanent pedestrian and non-motorised vehicle routes celebrating cultural and sporting activities throughout Cape Town. This is a bold idea because it will require a rethink of the traditional uses for many corridors in the city. The Freedom Walk initiative is an economic, social and spatial program, using culture to activate urban regeneration in the central city in order to build an inclusive civic identity and a vibrant economy for Cape Town.

7. Routes/ Roots Policy
âOur regional position makes us well-laced as a gateway to African markets.
Our unique strengths, including smaller size, better infrastructure, excellent
service provision and other benefits like a sophisticated higher education
network make us ideally suited to build up a competitive advantage in certain
sectors.
Such advantages bring with them economic growth. Economic growth
creates jobs and provides resources. These things in turn create an
inclusive society. The strategic framework for building a city based on five
pillars: the opportunity city; the safe city; the caring city; the inclusive city; and
the well-run city.â
Patricia de Lille on the Cape Town 5 Year IDP 2012 -2017
Executive Mayor of Cape Town
âThe new vision of arts and culture goes beyond social cohesion and
nourishing the soul of the nation. We believe that arts, culture and heritage
play a pivotal role in the economic empowerment and skills
development of a peopleâ

8. What is Freedom Walk?
The Freedom Walk initiative is an economic, social and spatial program, using culture to activate
urban regeneration in the central city in order to build an inclusive civic identity and a vibrant economy for
Cape Town. This presentation relates specifically to the establishment of the first route between Cape Town
Station and the Cape Town Stadium. However, several routes throughout the city can be identified as
potential movement routes along which the Freedom Walk concept can be positioned, and we hope the
success of the first route will transform it into a pilot project for at least three more major routes and multiple
subsidiary routes. These routes will fall under over-arching categories, such as Heritage, Design, Attractions, etc.
The new routes will be part of a larger phased rollout which will depend on timing of sponsorships and
various state endorsement processes.

16. Concept Freedom Walk?
Through a series of urban interventions, the Freedom Walk initiative (phase 1) is aimed at creating an
innovative and vibrant corridor of activity between Cape Town Station and the Cape Town Stadium. A
combination of permanent, semi-permanent and temporal interventions will generate an unique
and identifiable space which can constantly regenerate itself according to the season, occasion or time of day.
Cross-programming of work, play and life orientated activities will create a rich urban fabric along
the route. The concept is that the route in itself will begin to attract tourist and local interest, and become a
showcase for local talent and entrepreneurs.

Sons and Daughters of Cape Town
The sons & daughters of Cape Town is an initiative
intended
to highlight the importance of individuals connected
to Cape Town who have made our world a better
place in one way or another. The Freedom Walk
Fan Mile serves as the perfect vehicle for us to
show our appreciation of their efforts by
immortalising them and making them into
something the world is lacking; heroâs and role
models.
In the vein of the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame,
the route will be transformed into a canvas for the
sons & daughters of Cape Town to leave their
mark. As patrons walk down the Fan Mile they will
walk and see the greatness of giants such as
Nelson Mandela, Trevor Manuel, Mark Shuttleworth
etched in the stones they walk on.
This will become a national and international tourist
attraction that will increase the usage of this public
space and afford surrounding businesses the
opportunity to capitalise on this influx. Each year a
new son or daughter of Cape Town will be inducted
ceremoniously, affording ample opportunities for
marketing and promotion.
