Itinerary
July 27 ARRIVAL IN YOGYAKARTA
Upon your arrival at Yogyakarta airport, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel. After hotel
check-in, you will be driven directly to Prambanan temple, the largest Hindu structure in Java and
regarded as the most elegant of Hindu shrines. The Prambanan temple complex, originally comprised of
over 54 smaller surrounding temples, with three main temples in the center, is located near Roro
Jonggran. The construction of the temple started in the 8th century under the Mataram Hindu Kingdom.
Today, only the three main temples and three of the smaller temples remain standing. The reconstruction
process has been slow and extremely difficult. The temples have severely deteriorated since they were
abandoned in the 13th century when the Javanese Hindu kings began migrating from Central to East Java
fleeing the Muslim conquerors.
Dinner will be followed by a performance of Ramayana Ballet, which will be performed near the temple.
The Ramayana Ballet is a beautiful combination of art, drama and dance. The Ramayana Ballet performed
in the Prambanan Temple is a folklore version of the different cycles of the life of Rama, a Hindu god.
Dinner will be served in the garden restaurant. You will have a view of the back of the temple where the
ballet will be performed.
Meals (INCLUDED): none
Accommodation (INCLUDED): none
July 28 BOROBUDUR TOUR
Breakfast at the hotel before a full day excursion to Borobudur Temple.
Borobudur Temple is surrounded by 4 mountains representing a floating lotus flower in a huge pond.
The temple was built in the 9th century. After visiting the temple, you will proceed to the Mendut
Temple, located three kilometers from Borobudur. The Mendut Temple is said to face toward Benares,
India where Buddha Gautama taught his five disciples for the very first time. The smaller Mendut
Temple, which houses the great Buddha statue and the Pawon Temple, form an integral part of the
Borobudur complex. Some experts say the three-meter tall Buddha and the two Bodhisatva figures of
Lokesvara and Vajrapani are the greatest manifestations of Buddhist thought and art.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
After lunch, you will travel to the Sultan Palace located in the center of Yogyakarta (or just Yogya as the
local people call it). Keraton means a place where the Ratu-king lives. Today only the innermost
compound is considered Keraton proper. The lanes and lesser compounds are a part of the city.
Malioboro Street is the centre of Yogyakarta's largest tourist district with many hotels and restaurants
located nearby. Sidewalks on both sides of the street are crowded with small stalls selling a variety of
goods.
