- Hi, I am Carolyn …and I’m Bobbie Today, we are going to discuss the effects of what you post on social media. Who all has a facebook? Right, so social media is very popular as we all know.
- You are probably already aware of the positive side of social media, but we’re just going to touch on a few. We talk a lot about facebook the the same applies to myspace and other forms of social media. Who uses facebook to stay connected to someone in another country? Social media also give you a quick easy way to show people you are thinking about them. I know when friends post nice things on my wall, it can definitely cheer me up.
- Groups on facebook allow you to connect with people who share the same interests as you. Allowing you to feel apart of something bigger.
- For example, there are groups for incoming freshman which allow them to make friends and connect with other who may be feeling nervous just like them. So before even coming to Frostburg, they already feel connected and involved which makes the transition easier.
- A few hours after the earthquake happened, there were already thousands of people in this group. Acts as a way to connect everyone that shared in a similar experience.
- 48% of young Americans said they find out about news through facebook. Obviously, social media is the fastest way to get current news. For example, with the last example of the Earthquake group and we all know that people send tweets many times throughout the day.
- Here is an example how twitter can connect you with others. If you search #Frostburg, you can find out what is going on in Frostburg as this very moment
- You can follow news channels such as CNN to get instant news updates. As you can see these are updated at least once an hour. Sometimes more often
- You can create events and be informed of events going on. This is a simple easy way to spread information and let people know of upcoming concerts, interest meetings, and other social events.
- With traditional marketing strategies it is very hard to reach people in other countries. Facebook breaks these boundaries.
- Now, we are going to discuss the dark side of social media.
- We will go over how it can influence your relationships, your future career, campus organizations and more importantly, your safety.
- Has anyone ever posted anything that they later regretted whether is was an incriminating photo or a status posted out of anger? I’m sure that we all have. It’s easy to get carried away with what you do and say on social media because you cant actually see the people you are communicating with. It makes you feel anonymous. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you post things.
- Here we have a few examples of ridiculous things that have been said online. Don’t get me wrong, we all like to joke and have fun! However, posting your every though online damage your reputation.
- What is your first thought when you see this photo? Classy right? This photo also got him in trouble with his mother. I’m sure we all know that pictures and statuses can get us in trouble with out significant others. We are all looking at things from a different perspective. Side note: Police are also using facebook to find out about parties where there will be underage drinking and drugs
- Most importantly, social media can affect your safety. Crimes including sexual offenses, threats, bullying, hate crimes, fraud and theft, are up significantly. People do not exercise the same caution online as they do in person. Like I said before the internet provides a sense of anonymity and a false sense of security because of the lack of physical interaction. Users tend to tailor information they post to their friends, forgetting that others may see it.
- You provide information and even if it set to private there are ways to get around it. Criminals can use the information you provide such as, birthday, current city, hobbies, and interests to gain your trust. This information can also be used to guess passwords. Which is why you should never use pets names as passwords. The worst thing you can do is post your daily routine. We’re all guilty of doing it at some point. But posting class, then library, then gym, be home late tonight…is the worst the you can do. Especially if you make your status something like “going to dimes tonight” Not only do they know you aren’t home, but they know where you are and know that you will probably be intoxicated. The more information you post the easier it is for you to be taken advantage of.
- On this womans profile she has posted her full birthday, and children’s names and ages! Her complete address and the fact that she will be out of the country for awhile.
- Here is an example of how someone can pray off of your interests and hobbies.
- This is an example of why you should not put your personal information on social media. Never accept friend requests from people you don’t know. This may seem like common sense, but it happens.
- You may think none of this will happen to you, but I’m sure het people in these past examples thought the same thing Which is why they were so vulnerable. In order to protect yourself, you can limit who can see what you post. Change your privacy settings to limit what information is visible to others And to also block certain users from having contact with you. However remember, even if you limit who can see your profile there are ways to get around this. Don’t advertise to the world what you are doing or where you live! “ Florida for the week!” -Cool now I know that you wont be home. Limit what you post. Don’t share things that will make you valnerable to stalking such as email addresses, physical address, or your routine. Also remember you cant take it back. Once you post something, it’s potentially there for ever. Even if you delete photos, or posts, or even your profile Others could have saved photos and take screenshots. And there are ways to still access your profile
- The title is a link to a youtube video! Basically, social media is a great thing if you use it correctly. Use your online profile as a place to promote yourself professionally and academically. If you keep this in mind you wont post anything you’ll regret later and you’ll be able to enjoy all of the benefits of social media. Today in my ethics class we were talking about different types of lies and behavior in the business world, but I thought this was directly related to our topic here. My professor said that your behavior in your personal life reflects your behavior in your professional life. Your actions and the things you do on facebook or in your personal life will carry over to how you act in your professional life because you cant live two different lives! You are always under scrutiny and once you post something it can come back to haunt you year later.
- So now we are going to play a little game… Pick the person you think fits the position. Who do you think is running for SGA president?
- I don’t think that is who I want representing my campus.
- Who is running for homecoming queen?
- Make sure you vote for Sarah for Homecoming queen!
- Neither of these people go to school here. Who is the fraternity president?
- What you do leaves footprints…and can probably always be found.
- You know those groups that people make when they break their phones? Don’t put your number in them. They’re usually public groups! So anyone could have seen or found my phone number!
