When we set out to develop Lotus Connections, we had these ideas in mind. It’s social software for business that empowers people to be more effective and innovative by building dynamic networks of corworkers, partners, and customers. Lotus Connections consists of five services: Profiles is a “white pages” directory that helps you reach individuals. Profiles also forms a kind of hub for the other services, as we’ll see. Communities is a listing service for groups of people. It helps people organize around a common interest. The blog service allows indviduals and teams to blog, and attract readers who can then connect by commenting on their blogs. Dogear is a social bookmarking service. It makes it easy for people to organize bookmarks and share them with others as they work. And Activities is a simple collaboration service that helps individuals to organize their work and coordinate their collaborations with other people.
Planets and Moons Which added up to a pretty bad user experience – you had to hunt all over the place to find anything And since every site looked different, it was really hard to navigate. We refer to this as the solar system model. Very strong planets (e.g., unit, geo, brand sites) with various moons and some dwarf planets . Each had their own audiences, information, tools and applications – not necessarily driving a consistent message – providing easy access and a means to bypass corporate messaging found on w3.ibm.com (the weak sun in this example). As Gerstner wanted to drive culture change and use w3 to help do this – change the mindset of a global company -- this model was not sustainable or effective. During this time we had over 8,000 sites and a proliferation of redundant tools and applications. CLICK
Buckets With a w3 homepage that could now serve multiple audiences, we could really start to increase the gravitational pull of that central homepage. Really make it a useful tool for IBMers. By 2002 the w3 homepage could serve up profiled content to a variety of different audiences – however the links still often pointed to silo sites. CLICK
Single Point of Entry We continue to focus on delivering all relevant, personalized content needs (information, tools and apps) through one central location – w3.ibm.com – the “single point of entry.” Increasing focus on using a personalization and profiling capability to deliver the right content to a specific employee based upon their country, location, unit, employee-type, industry and job role. CLICK
And w3 has evolved with the times: • Because over 40% of IBMers don’t go to an IBM facility every day. • Because tens of thousands of IBMers may never work in a traditional location. • Because over half of IBM has been working for the company for less then five years. • Because 320,000 IBMers serving clients in 160 countries need to be connected – 24x7. And along the way its mission has moved from an outward bound communication tool to a platform for where real work gets done in IBM.
This is our intranet….you know it well. We call it "w3" because it's the URL for all intranet sites, w3.ibm.com. You'll start to see some of the features and functions as I go through this presentation but the first point I wanted to make to you today was that the intranet, ironically, became an impediment to the deployment of integrated solutions for customers. And now that we're architecting it more correctly, and it's more aligned with our value proposition, from an employee standpoint we're actually taking the organization of the company and rendering it largely irrelevant. And that's a wonderful thing for 320,000 IBMers.
Over the course of 10 years, IBM’s intranet has transformed from a corporate information portal to a platform that is the premise for how most employee’s work and collaborate across the company and with one another. The vision for the On Demand Workplace is to integrate content and tools into one portal, creating a single browser-based work environment. In 2004, we took important steps toward realizing this vision: More than 300,000 users have updated and personalized their BluePages profiles, a growth of more than 67 percent in one year, making it easier for IBMers to find one another. If you haven’t done this, please take a few minutes to complete your profiles. 30 minutes saved by employees each month as a result of the ability to quickly locate and engage colleagues with needed expertise More than 400 communities of interest have sprung up for IBMers to come together virtually to share expertise and information around particular topics they share an interest in. The On Demand Workplace is evolving to meet the needs of specific job roles; delivering personalized “resources” -- information, tools and collaborative capabilities based on the work that you do. For example, a person in a sales role and a person in a software developer role have different information and application needs. access all the resources you need to do your job are integrated and presented to you via the Work tab on ODW. Areas of Focus: Information Discovery: Focus on Information Discovery to provide content management and information architecture that are holistic, that organises the company without regard to geo or division or brand. Answer the perennial question – Why can’t I find anything? Integrated Help Strategy: Integrated help strategy and offerings across the entire workplace that provide consistent, high quality assistance. Answer the question why can’t I find the help I need? Enterprise application integration: Single point of accountability for enterprise workplace applications and processes that are integrated end-to-end, work automatically and ad hoc with one another . Answers the question Why are there multiple applications that do similar things, or are not integrated with one another? Employee-centric integrated workplace: Applications that are designed with usability as the first consideration and processes to engage users early in the design process. Answers the question - Why are applications deployed that don’t meet employees’ needs?
