2015 ANNUAL REPORT EDITION
News and Information for Friends of the Freestore Foodbank
Addressing Childhood Hunger
The Freestore Foodbank operates one of its six school-based food
pantries at Dayton High School in Northern Kentucky. “I don’t know
what we would do without it,” says Erika Turley who quit her job
after her third child, when childcare became unaffordable. “My
husband makes good money,
but it’s commission-based. There
are months we have enough,
and months we only have $20
for food.”
Erika learned about the pantry
from a school resource counselor
who noticed the family coming to
school every day in the summer
for the summer meal program.
Prior to the pantry opening, Erika
could only rely on a once a month
visit to St. Bernard’s Pantry. “I
couldn’t get to other pantries
because friends who could drive
me there worked during the day
when those pantries were open,”
notes Erika. With a fluctuating
income never remaining below
the required level for three
consecutive months, the family
also never qualified for food stamps. Erika learned to be resourceful, a
skill which still helps. “It takes practice eating only what you need,”
she says, “but I can now stretch a pound of meat out to two meals,
with vegetable soup one night and spaghetti the next.” Erika’s family
is grateful. “My kids complain about all the spaghetti we eat, but at
least they get three meals a day.”
Local media has recently showcased the proliferation of childhood poverty in Cincinnati. With
children living in poverty more likely to experience hunger, it is no surprise that many children in
our area experience the repercussions of childhood hunger, including poor educational performance,
diabetes, and even cardiovascular disease. Because children are our future, the Freestore Foodbank has
several programs that address childhood hunger. Here are stories from four of those programs:
School Pantries
Tammy Wickey is the mother of
three elementary school students at
Covington’s Glen O. Swing Elementary.
Her children receive meals from the
Freestore Foodbank’s Kids Cafe program,
which provides hot, nutritious meals
for children who might otherwise go
hungry after school. “I work days, which
is good,” Tammy says, “but I can’t leave
work until after 5:00, so my kids stay in
the afterschool program until I get them.”
Tammy is able to feed her youngsters
once they get home, but without these
meals it would be harder. “My eldest eats
lunch at 10:30 a.m. By the time school is
out, he is starving.” Tammy acknowledges
there are children who count the hours
until they are back in school, solely
because they know they will eat again.

2. Dear Friends and Supporters,
Every day, 99,380 children are among the 294,790 people in the Tri-State area
who are at risk of hunger, according to an annual study by Feeding America called
Map the Meal Gap. Over the past year, we have seen a 4.4% increase in children
facing hunger and a 3.5% increase in adults. Hunger truly does exist right here in
our own backyard.
Recent media reports have helped to raise
awareness that the City of Cincinnati has
the second highest child poverty rate in the
nation. This is an alarming statistic that goes
hand-in-hand with the problem of hunger in
our community. Research shows that hunger
affects a child’s ability to learn and perform
well at school. Hungry children come to class
ill-prepared and are more likely to have trouble
focusing at school. Children who rely on free
and reduced-price school lunches are at even
greater risk of hunger in the evenings, weekends,
summer months, and during other school breaks.
Through programs like Power Pack, Kids Cafe,
KIND and Summer Feeding, we provide meals to
children at times when they are most at risk of hunger.
We get to see your support in action as we visit our Power Pack schools and Kids
Cafe and Summer Food Service sites. We often hear from the students that you
are helping us to support. A perfect example is this note that we received from a
little girl at John P. Parker School in Madisonville. She receives Power Packs every
Friday during the school year and shares with us how the nutritious packs of food
make her feel.
She is just one of many children we are impacting. Thanks to your generous
support, we have expanded the Power Pack program from serving 4,000 children
weekly last year to now serving over 4,700 children each week. This means that
we are able to provide even more kids with the proper nutrition that they need, in
turn helping to increase school attendance, improve test scores and increase the
likeliness that they show up at school prepared to learn.
Thank you for joining us on this journey to
help make a difference in our Tri-State area.
Together we can solve hunger and ensure that
our children grow healthy and strong, and it
all starts with food.
Sincerely,
Kurt Reiber

Fortunately, there are children who do not have to
count the hours, thanks to the Power Pack program.
This program delivers small packs containing nutritious,
kid-friendly snacks intended to feed schoolchildren
over weekends, holidays, and school breaks. Over 4,700
children receive these packs each week. Jacob Zinc,
principal at Highland Elementary in Highland County, is
ecstatic that his school now receives packs. “Whenever
we have an odd day off or a long weekend,” he says,
“students ask if they will receive their packs early. That’s
a testament to what Power Packs mean to them and how
much they rely on this food.”

Addressing Childhood Hunger (cont’d)
Partnering with schools to deliver meals to students is one thing, but
how do you address childhood hunger for infants? For Freestore Foodbank,
it requires a strategic partnership with Children’s Hospital. In 2011,
pediatricians at area clinics realized families were diluting baby formula to
make ends meet. In fact, a recent in-clinic survey found one in eight food
insecure children go an entire day without eating. Children’s reached out
to Freestore Foodbank and KIND was born. KIND uses clinical staff to
identify needs and make sure families like Tamara Benjamin’s receive
ample baby formula.
“I don’t know what would happen to us if it wasn’t for KIND,” says
Tamara. When she found herself laid off, she sought food stamps in order
to feed her premature infant, but there was a processing delay. “We were
on the verge of going hungry,” says Tamara, “but then
a paralegal aid at the clinic told me about
KIND.” She enrolled and started
receiving baby formula immediately.
“I was scared, but KIND saved us
until I was able to get back on
my own feet.”
KIND: Keeping Infants Nourished and Developing
These are the stories of a few children who are at-risk of hunger but are receiving meals. Sadly,
there are many others like them who remain hungry. To learn more about these children and making
a contribution to the programs that can serve them, contact Telly McGaha at 513-482-7542 or

Freestore Foodbank
Annual
Report 2015This holiday season meant even more to a local family; it meant a fresh start.
The light of Devona’s life is her five children. She speaks proudly of her
oldest boys, both who are in college. She’s equally proud of 16-year-old Demi,
11-year-old Jahnia and nine-year-old Jahfrey, who has Down syndrome.
Devona’s husband provided financially for the family while she was a full-time
mother to the children. Yet, life took a drastic turn when the couple divorced.
Devona didn’t have the financial means to keep her and her children in their
apartment. An eviction notice sent the family packing; they moved to North
Carolina to live with extended family. A fresh start brought new challenges. Devona
says that the eviction followed her, making it difficult as she spent months trying to find
housing of her own. Yet she remained optimistic through the hardships noting that, “you have
to go through tough times to grow.”
Education challenges for Jahfrey and a health scare soon followed. Devona decided that returning to Cincinnati was the
best option for both her and her family; a decision that would provide the new chapter that they were seeking.
A visit to the Freestore Foodbank’s Customer Connection Center connected Devona with food. It also introduced her to
Cherish, a case manager with the Freestore Foodbank who helps families to keep a roof over their head. Cherish quickly found
an apartment for Devona and her kids. Things were starting to fall into place. “It was just a blessing because of my situation
and where I was,” Devona recalls.
Then came an unexpected phone call; a call that would transform things even more for the family who had spent months
sleeping on floors and couches. CORT Furniture and the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Apartment Association,
or GCNKAA, would fully furnish Devona’s new apartment; a generous notion that the organizations carry out each holiday
season for a family that the Freestore Foodbank serves. “I didn’t believe it at first. I sat down and started crying. I kept thinking
about all we have gone through over the past few months.”
The days quickly passed and the big moment finally arrived. On a chilly
December morning, Devona and her family were bundles of excitement as a big red
CORT truck pulled up outside of their apartment. One by one, CORT Furniture
employees carried in furniture and home furnishings. A couch, chairs, beds, dressers,
tables, lamps, TVs, mirrors, even a Christmas tree and presents filled the once bare
apartment. Devona’s eyes welled up with tears as she peeked into the kitchen.
She was greeted by the sight of CORT and GCNKAA employees unpacking and
organizing the contents of boxes. Her counters were now lined with kitchen items
that she has never had - a blender, knife set, bakeware, new dishes and silverware.
“I have never received anything like this,” Devona says as she fights back tears.
“It’s such a great blessing.”
Then came one final surprise – a check and gift cards from CORT and GCNKAA
to help Devona; a generous
gift the single mother of five
sincerely values as she works
actively to find a job and to get
life back on track.
“It’s been a really trying year
for me and this really turned
everything around for me and
my family. Suddenly, things are
falling into place. All of this
reminded me that there are
good people in this world. Now,
we are going to have a great
Christmas and a great year!” n

As an organization dedicated to serving our community, we must constantly
look to the future to anticipate how we can increase support to local families
and help them build stability and security. This report highlights our efforts to
fight hunger and meet the evolving needs of our neighbors. It sets out what we
have accomplished over the past year and looks forward to ways to improve a
collaborative effort to encourage and support self-sufficiency for families caught
in the ever widening web of poverty.
We want to thank every supporter, from the one time volunteer to the monthly
donor to the food drive organizer, for your amazing impact in our community.
Together we are working to create a stronger and healthier region through
on-going programs and innovative initiatives. As the new Freestore Foodbank
Board Chair, I’m thrilled to be part of bringing essential food and services to
those facing crisis.
Our new five-year strategic plan is being initiated to ensure that we continue
to move towards a future without hunger. We will prioritize the needs of those we
serve; including ready access to healthy foods, enhanced emergency services and
assistance for long-term stability. We intend to develop comprehensive strategies
to close the meal gap; helping every child, adult and senior find the nutrition
they need.
Stay tuned to hear more about our strategic plan initiatives. We look forward
to your continued partnership with us as we wish to solve
hunger here in our community.
