It’s time for spring cleaning! But before you

• Continue breathing deeply. When you
feel comfortable, extend your breath count:

nose and eight counts as you exhale.

hen was the last time you had a good
night’s sleep? If you need to search
your memory for the answer, it may
be time to find answers to your sleep problem.
Research continues to show that sleep does a lot
more than relieve tiredness. It can go a long way
toward keeping us healthy, energized and free of
illness. The more we learn about sleep, the more
we recognize how important it is to the quality
of our lives.
Time changes all – including your
sleep needs
As we age and go through different life stages,
our sleep needs also change. Babies need about
16 hours of sleep daily, while teenagers require
an average of about 9 hours. For most adults,
between 7-9 hours does the trick.
While older adults tend to need as much sleep
as when they were younger, they also tend to
sleep more lightly and for shorter periods. One
estimate is that about half of everyone over age
65 often has sleeping problems. We don’t know
if this is a normal part of aging, or whether it
stems from health issues.
One thing is clear: not getting enough sleep
is dangerous. Studies show that drivers who
are sleep-deprived perform as badly on the
road as those who are intoxicated – in some
cases, worse!
Sleep, Diabetes and other diseases
A new study from the University of Chicago
Medical Center surprised sleep scientists. It
found that when people didn’t get enough “deep
sleep” for three nights in a row, it had the same
effect on their blood sugar as gaining 20-30
pounds. Their risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes
was raised. Before this, it was thought that just
the hours spent sleeping – not the quality of
sleep – affected the risk of developing Diabetes.
This could be a “wake-up call” for the 40
million people who have constant, on-going
sleep disorders, and for the other 20 million
who have trouble sleeping from time to time.
There are so many other health problems
connected to sleep troubles that the old saying
“You snooze, you lose” could be turned around:
“If you don’t snooze, you lose.” Sleep plays a big
role in all these conditions and diseases:
• Heart disease
• Stroke
• Asthma
• Epilepsy
• Depression
• Schizophrenia
• Alzheimer’s Disease
• Flu
• Infections

How well are you sleeping?
• It should take between five and 15 minutes
to fall asleep. If you fall asleep faster, you’re
probably sleep deprived.
• If it takes between 15 and 30 minutes to fall
asleep you’re probably over-stimulated and
under too much stress.
• More than 30 minutes to fall asleep? Con-
sider seeing your health care professional.
• If you wake once during the night and go
back to sleep quickly, that’s okay.
• If you wake up and stay awake, it could be a
sign that your blood sugar is unbalanced.
• Sleep is supposed to be refreshing. If you
wake up feeling hungry, you probably had
a good night’s sleep.
• If it takes longer than 30 minutes to start
thinking about breakfast, you may not be
sleeping well. If hours pass after waking
before you feel hungry, your sleep quality
is very poor.

Eight tips for sound sleep
When counting sheep just doesn’t cut it, experts
suggest these eight steps to help you get a good
night’s sleep:
1. Set your sleep schedule. Try to go to
bed at the same time each night, and rise
at the same time each morning. Tinkering
with this schedule can bring on insomnia.
Even sleeping late on weekends can disrupt
your sleep during the week, making it harder
to wake up on time and stay alert during
your day.
2. Exercise. So vital to all-around health,
physical activity also helps promote restful
sleep. Be careful not to work out close to
bedtime, though; try to exercise several
hours before bedtime.
3. Downplay drugs. Caffeine, nicotine and
alcohol can all harm sleep. So watch your
consumption of coffee, chocolate, soft
drinks, caffeinated teas and some pain
relievers. Nicotine withdrawal tends to
wake smokers up in the early morning,
and alcohol robs you of deep sleep.
4. Wind down. Before going to bed, a
soothing ritual – like reading, taking a
warm bath or listening to calming music –
can be a signal to your brain and body that
sleep time is almost here.
5. Get in sync with sunlight. If possible, wake
up around the time the sun does (or close to
it). This helps your internal body clock reset
itself every day. Alternately, use very bright
lights when you wake.
6. Can’t sleep? Don’t. If sleep won’t come,
don’t try to force it by lying in bed awake.
Pick up a book, go watch TV, do some-
thing else until you feel tired. Sleepless-
ness can feed on itself, so don’t worry: go
do something.
7. Get comfy. Room temperature that’s too
hot or too cold can interrupt sleep or make
it tough to fall asleep, so keep your bedroom
at a comfortable setting.
8. Still stuck? Get help. If you have persis-
tent problems sleeping, or you always feel
tired during the day, then it may be time
to see a health care professional. With
so many health issues connected to sleep,
it’s important not to ignore continuing
slumber troubles.

each year. While many of these disorders
are rare, there are four that affect millions
of people:
Insomnia. Can’t get to sleep or stay asleep?
It happens to almost everyone from time to
time. When it goes on for long periods of time,
though, insomnia can pose a serious health
threat. Sleeping pills may work for a few
weeks, but in the long run they can actually
disrupt natural sleep. And, prescription pills
can create dependency.
Sleep apnea. Often, loud snoring, obesity and
daytime sleepiness are the symptoms of this
disorder. It commonly occurs because of excess
fat bearing down on the windpipe. The result:
breathing is interrupted during sleep; the
sufferer frequently snorts or gasps. Long-term,
it can lead to heart attacks and stroke.
Restless Legs Syndrome. Older people espe-
cially tend to have the unpleasant feelings of
crawling or tingling in their legs and feet that
come with this disorder. It runs in families: the
urge to move can be constant, even at night,
resulting in insomnia.
Narcolepsy. It’s serious: people with this
disorder can suddenly, frequently fall right to
sleep, even while working or driving, for up
to 30 minutes or longer. Even with enough
nighttime sleep, sufferers can have these “sleep
attacks,” which tend to be inherited, or some-
times occur after brain damage from injury
or disease.
Snoring could indicate serious
health issues
Snoring may be caused by structural defects
in the sinus cavity, allergies or even nasal
polyps. However, snoring is usually caused
by obesity.
According to many sleep experts, snoring
is related to the problem of insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance is an early warning sign
of Type 2 Diabetes. Therefore, snoring may
be the first sign of movement toward Type
2 Diabetes.
A frightening aspect of snoring is that you
get much less oxygen in your bloodstream.
Less available oxygen means that your brain
is being deprived of oxygen. People who snore
lose I.Q. points every year until the problem
is corrected. So, if you feel unable to concen-
trate, or if your memory is failing, check to
see if you are snoring. If you are, then by all
means find out why! Treat the cause of this
problem immediately. If snoring is caused by
obesity, reduce your body fat.
Snoring may also be a sign of sleep apnea –
discussed previously in this article. Sleep
apnea can seriously disrupt the quality of
sleep. People with chronic untreated sleep
apnea may also develop hypertension and
heart disease.

A lot has changed in the last 20 years. In

shows how important fruits and vegetables
are to promoting good health. They are rich

need each day? Follow these suggestions:
Active men and teen boys, who typically
need about 2,880 calories to reach or maintain
a healthy weight:

Once the founders knew what they wanted

Your body is God’s Temple

What if we celebrated Easter
every morning by starting out
the day with joy in our hearts
and minds? I remember cele-
brating Easter growing up as
a child, but not knowing the
profound truth of Easter. I
was not raised in a spiritual
home, but I was always part of the scouting
program. As a Cub Scout and later as a Boy
Scout, our troop would serve people through-
out the year, and at Easter time we helped with
a huge sunrise service. It was a big deal with
several months of training. On Good Friday, we
would set up camp at the foot of a high hill in
southern California. We camped two nights and
drilled the specific duties that we had been
assigned. On Easter morning around 3 a.m. we
would rise to take our station on the mountain
trail that led to the top where the Easter message
was given as the sun started to rise.
Each of us would have a candle to light the
pathway for those going up the hill to celebrate.
When the last person passed, the first Scout at
the bottom of the path would start their trip to
the top, inviting each boy to join along the way.
We were excited and talked all the way up.
As each boy joined the group, we shared his
story of ensuring that no one fell on the trail.
Finally, when we arrived at the top, the whole
troop came together joining the others. A holy
silence covered the crowd as we all listened to
the message and watched the sunrise.
God desires us to be a light on a hill
The excitement I felt helping those people every
year get to the top of that hill stayed with me. It
was many years later that I came to under-stand
the profound truth of the message of Easter and
the sacrifice that was made for me. Since then,
I have tried to start each day with the attitude
that this day is to be celebrated with joy, love
and service. God really does desire us to be a
light on the hill helping others to know the
love and acceptance of the sacrifice He made
just for us.
When you first get up in the morning, light your
own candle by reading the Bible and ask God to
use you as a light to others. You will be amazed
at the joy you will receive as you put God in first
place and celebrate the victory and freedom that
He bought just for you.

As families and friends gather to enjoy this
Easter season, we celebrate God’s gift of freedom
and His love that conquers death. As part of
his 2004 Easter greeting to the nation, George
W. Bush said, “For those who observe Easter
Season, our faith brings confidence that good
will overcome evil and that joy is everlasting.
Today we give thanks for God’s many blessings
and pray for His peace in the affairs of men.”
Enjoy the season of rebirth by establishing a
relationship with God, or if you already have

For many of us, the short winter days and chillier
temperatures are an easy excuse for inactivity.
But now that the days are getting warmer – and
longer – we’d like to inspire you to get moving
again. But take it easy at first! You should always
stretch to condition your muscles after a period
of inactivity.
Stretching exercise
Stretching exercise gives you more freedom
of movement to do the things you need to do
and like to do. Here are some simple tips to
keep in mind when you begin to stretch after
an exercise “hibernation.”
• Always warm up before doing any stretching.
Start out by doing a little bit of easy walking
and arm-pumping first. If you stretch cold
muscles, you could hurt yourself.
• Stretching should never cause pain, especially
joint pain. If it does, you are stretching too
far, and you need to reduce the stretch so that
it doesn’t hurt.
• Never “bounce” into a stretch: make slow,
steady movements instead.
• Avoid “locking” your joints into place when
you straighten them during stretches. Your
arms and legs should be straight when you
stretch them, but not locked tightly.
• If you’ve had problems with your hips, check
with your health care provider before doing
any lower body exercises. You should also
consult with your health care provider if
you have any concerns about your ability to
handle exercise.
Great spring activities
Now that you’re warmed up and feeling limber
again, here are several suggestions to get back into
the swing of things. Some are tried-and-true favor-
ites, and some may be new additions to your routine.
Pilates
Pilates is an innovative system of mind-body
exercises that can dramatically transform the
way your body looks, feels and performs. Pilates
teaches body awareness, good posture and easy
graceful movement. It can improve flexibility
and agility. Pilates may even help ease back pain.
Many local community centers, health clubs and
YMCAs offer Pilates classes. You can also do
Pilates exercises at home.
Yoga
Yoga exercises improve circulation, stimulate

skeletal system. It’s also a great way to combine

Gardening
Gardening is a great way to enjoy the pleas-
ant spring days at a leisurely pace. Every time
you turn a trowel or reach to pull a weed, you’re

eating to this activity? Plant your own salad
with leaf lettuce, oregano, tomatoes, parsley
and chives.
Fishing
Fishing continues to be a favorite North
American pastime. Now that ice has melted
on most lakes and streams find out just how
relaxing it is. Enjoy being outside on a sunny
spring day, drinking a refreshing beverage
from the cooler and getting a fishing line wet.
Whether or not you catch anything, fishing is
a great stress reliever.

Why are so many golfers passionate about
their sport? Golf is a game that requires skill,
mental alertness and etiquette. Golf is also a
social sport... just think about some of the great

some of the most beautiful places in your own

Stretching - A year-long investment
in your golf game
As you get older, the need to retain flexibility in
order to play good golf becomes more and more
important. Here are a few exercises that will help
you accomplish that.
• Begin by raising a golf club above your head.
Gently lean over to the left as far as you can
go. Repeat to the other side. Do these four or
five times, gently.
• If holding the club on your shoulders
is too difficult for you, put the golf
club into the small of your back and
hook your arms around the club.
• Then take the golf shaft
across your shoulders. Get
into your golf posture and
gently twist until you have
made a full shoulder turn.
Repeat to the other side.
Remember to always maintain
your spine angle throughout.
• For another exercise, take the
palm of your right hand and
put it on the elbow of your left arm which is
stretched out in front of you. Gently pull the
right hand toward the right shoulder until
you feel a gentle stretch. Do the same with
the other arm. Repeat this four or five times.
• Finally sit on the ground with your right leg
crossed over your outstretched left leg. Gently
push the back of your left arm against the
right knee until you feel a gentle stretch in
your lower back. Do this three or four times.
Repeat this exercise with the other leg.
Do not do any of these exercises if you have
serious back or health problems. If in doubt,

Springtime is here! Flowers are blooming,
the sun is shining and it’s great to be alive.
But then... it begins.
The sniffling.
The sneezing.
The itchy, watery eyes.
The congestion.
That’s right: allergy season is back! This year,
don’t let allergies get the best of you; by
making some simple lifestyle adjustments,
spring can be something you look forward to,
instead of something you dread.
What are allergies?
Allergies are your body’s response to a particu-
lar allergen, or any substance that your body
is sensitive to. When your body encounters
these allergens, it treats them like invaders and
your immune system kicks into gear. Your body
develops antibodies to fight them, which triggers
the release of histamines; histamines work to
wash out the allergen, causing the troublesome
symptoms you may be familiar with:
• Sneezing
• Runny nose
• Itchy throat, eyes and nose
• Congestion
• Sinus pressure
• Red, watery eyes
• Dark circles under the eyes.
Over time, these irritating symptoms can
lead to inflammation and a higher risk for
infection. People who suffer from respiratory
allergies have an increased tendency for ear
infections, sinus infections, sore throats,
lung infections and bronchitis.
Common allergens
Some of the common allergens are seasonal,
while others are present year round.
• Pollen
• Mold
• Dust
• Animal dander
The problem with pollen
During different seasons of the year, plants
release pollen. Pollen is what plants use to repro-
duce. It floats on the air and can travel long
distances. Pollen is responsible for many people’s
allergies. Springtime allergies are often caused
by tree pollen. Summer allergies can be caused
by grass and weed pollen, and fall allergies are
often due to ragweed pollen.
How to minimize your exposure
No matter how careful you are, you will still
not be able to avoid all the pollen and other
allergens in the air. But don’t be discouraged!
There are ways you can minimize your exposure
to keep your symptoms in check:
• During allergy season, many local news
stations will give pollen level reports. If the
levels are high, try to avoid going outdoors
if at all possible. If you do go out, wear a
pollen-filtering mask.
• Use air conditioning in your house and
car; close doors and windows when pollen
counts are high
• Avoid going outdoors in the early morning;
this is when pollen counts are highest
• Take a shower before bed to wash off
any pollen you may have picked up
during the day
• Don’t line dry clothes or sheets; pollen
can stick to them
• Regularly replace air
conditioner/heater filters.
Year-round allergies
Many people suffer from more than seasonal
allergies; they may be allergic to mold, dust,
animal dander or any number of other things.
While some of these allergens may be hard
to avoid, there are steps you can take to
help cut down on your exposure and the
resulting symptoms.
Mold – Mold is a fungus
that releases spores to

that the condition is often not given the attention it deserves. It isn’t a top priority for many health care providers.
Potbellies may indicate heart risk

A new study finds that potbellies may be a big indicator of future heart disease. Researchers found a strong
association between the potbelly, apple shape among a relatively young group of people and the buildup of
plaque in arteries. These findings were published in the August 21, 2007 issue of the Journal of the American
College of Cardiology.
The American Heart Association has stated that more than 870,000 North Americans die from heart disease each
year, making it the leading killer of men and women. Study results indicated that for both men and women, even
small increases in waist-to-hip ratio translated into small but steady increases in calcium deposits. According to
researchers, abdominal fat also can trigger a chain of inflammatory activities that can cause plaque buildup and
ultimately heart disease.
Researchers concluded that, “even small improvements in your body shape are going to benefit you, with the
ultimate goal of having the smallest waist relative to your hips.” They also suggested that health care advisors
focus on central weight distribution rather than weight alone as a more precise way to identify at-risk patients.
Too much computer time can lead to vision problems

There are very few households that don’t consider the family computer an essential appliance. More people are
spending increasing amounts of time on the computer each day. Now, experts warn that all those hours spent
online can take a toll on your eyes.
Studies have shown that eyestrain and other vision problems can occur in as many as nine out of 10 people

• Minimize reflected glare on the monitor by using window shades or curtains and dimmer switches on lights.

What an eventful – and joyful – life Evelyn and
Dave have had! Although they’ve had many
crises in their lives, their strong religious convic-
tions and devotion to each other have helped
them along the way. They are also quick to credit

through some difficult times.
Evelyn first heard about TriVita when she tuned

was perfect. “I was starting to get real draggy and

been an invalid all his life.
After observation, they sent him home to rest
to get ready for his surgery. The Lord again was
there for him as that night Dave stood and
watched the church burn down. He knew the
building was not the church; the people were.
“Our lives have come full circle,” Evelyn
notes. They are once again using their house
as a church sanctuary, but Evelyn and Dave
are moving ahead full-speed with plans to
rebuild their church on the site where their
old church burned. “It’s been really great how
the church has come together,” says Evelyn.
“The new church will be the fulfillment of
God’s vision and our dreams for Jubilee – a
new beginning. I look forward to inviting all
the members of our community to thank
them for their support. We give credit to Jesus
for giving us the strength and faith to go on,”
says Evelyn. At their age (Evelyn is 67 and
Dave is 70) many people would be planning
for their retirement. But not them. “We won’t
retire when so many people need help. God
has many plans for our acres!”

30. It’s Easter! For many people, Easter is a time of tradition
embracing spirituality, family, friends and lots of food.
People gather around tables that practically buckle under
the weight of the feast; others enjoy picnics, backyard
barbeques or Easter egg hunts. No matter what your
tradition, you can stay within the bounds of good health
by keeping moderation in mind. Stick to reasonable
portion sizes; there are always leftovers!

Honey Glazed Ham
Directions
Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Place ham in roasting pan
and bake uncovered for two hours. While ham is baking, combine
brown sugar, honey, pineapple juice, lemon juice and mustard in
saucepan. Bring to a boil then simmer 10 minutes. After two hours
of baking, remove ham from oven and brush with glaze. Put ham
back in oven for an additional 30-45 minutes and baste with the
glaze every 10 minutes. When ham is ready to serve, affix pineapple
rings to top of ham with toothpicks. If desired, put cherries in center
of pineapple rings.

10-pound cooked, bone-in ham
½ C brown sugar, packed
¼ C honey
1 C pineapple juice
1 tsp lemon juice
2 tsp Dijon mustard
Delicious Deviled Eggs
Directions
Peel eggs and slice in half lengthwise. Remove yolks and put in
medium bowl. Mash the yolks with a fork and mix in remaining
ingredients. For a creamier taste, add more mayonnaise. For extra
zing, add more mustard and/or vinegar. Salt and pepper to taste.
When egg yolk mixture is ready, spoon it back into the hollows of
the egg whites. Sprinkle tops with paprika if desired. For added
presentation, put egg yolk mixture in a decorating bag and use a
decorating tip of your choice to fill the egg whites.
6 hard-boiled eggs
2 T Low-fat mayonnaise
1 T Mustard
1 tsp Vinegar
Salt and Pepper
Paprika (optional)
