T
his month, June 21, brings
us the first day of summer,
and like many people,
for me summer always
triggers memories – mostly of my
own childhood.
Recently my youngest daughter told me she had
purchased an ice cream maker so she could make
her own fun summer sorbet recipes. It’s funny
how a word, an image, a song or even a smell can
take you right back to an exact moment in time.
Suddenly I flashed back to those summers in the
1960s when my mom and dad would have friends
and family over on Sunday for supper (that’s
Texan for dinner), and the highlight of the meal
was sitting out on the back porch in flimsy lawn
chairs while my dad cranked away on the wooden
ice cream freezer.
As the youngest who rarely left my dad’s side,
there I would be propped up on the top of the
freezer with all the weight a skinny kid could
muster up so Daddy could crank faster and easier.
We’d stop every few minutes and pour more salt
from the box onto the ice to make it freeze. I
remember the anticipation I felt waiting for that
homemade banana ice cream! Those were some
great summer memories, and although I hadn’t
thought of that experience for decades, I suddenly
was very grateful for being able to remember.

These words that
come up when
describing the body’s
immune system
sound militaristic,
and with good
reason. This extraordinary, complex
system is our front line, every day, in
the battle against the things that
don’t belong in our bodies. Whether
it’s an object, an organism or a
tissue, the immune system is in
charge of recognizing it as friend or
foe, and charging into action if the
visitor is considered hostile.
One of the best descriptions of the immune
system, I think, comes from Immunologist
William Paul of the National Institutes of
Health. He says, “The immune system has
a phenomenal ability for dealing with infor-
mation for learning and memory, for creating
and storing and using that information.”
Sometimes called the king of the body’s super
systems, the immune system has an amazing
ability to assess molecules that have never
been in the body before, and decide
on the appropriate action.
Medical science is focusing
increasingly on the role that
inflammation plays in disease,
and I’d like to focus here
on the immune system’s
role in “deploying” and
managing the body’s
inflammation response.
Inflammation:
why and how
A key element of the
immune system is the
lymphatic system, because it
comes in direct contact with
every cell. So if any cell
anywhere in the body is “in
trouble,” it’s the lymphatic
system that answers the call.
The lymphatic system is not
pumped by the heart, but by the
movement of the lungs. That’s
why, when a person practices
deep abdominal breathing,
they’re stimulating the system.
And it’s also why, when we are
stressed, an interplay of glands
and organs makes our breathing
shallow – and puts our lymphatic system
into stagnation. This explains why people
under stress have higher rates of every-
thing from viral infection to
serious disease.
When the lymphatic system is
stagnant, cells begin to suffocate
because nutrients can’t get in and
waste can’t get out. The body has to
find other means to cope with this
potential infection, and it turns to
inflammation. Inflammation is a
normal response to an abnormal
condition, and it’s part of how our
bodies cope. Let’s look at how
inflammation works for us, helping
us to heal when we have tissue
injury from, for example, a
sprained finger:
1. Redness. An injured area needs
an increased supply of nutrients
and proteins carried in the blood.
So, blood supply increases, and
the tissue turns red.
2. Swelling. The injured area is
bathed in healing proteins and
substances to control bleeding,
as well as an increased supply for
transport of waste. This causes
the injured area to swell.

3. Pain. The injured area needs to be protected.
We instinctively guard an injury because we
feel or anticipate pain.
4. Heat. The damaged tissue becomes weak-
ened, and so is susceptible to infection.
White blood cells rush to the area and
defend the fragile cells from microbes (very
broadly, germs). Heat or fever in the damaged
area is a sign that this is working.
5. Loss of function. This process is accompa-
nied by a reduction in function of the injured
area until it is healed.
If the stress of the injury continues, so does
the inflammation. This launches a cascade of
inflammation leading to infection, leading to
allergy, leading to irritation, leading to more
inflammation and so on.
Chronic stress, chronic inflammation
Eventually, an immune system under stress and
deprived of the proper nutrients and nurturing
will form an auto-immune response. Auto-
immunity is an abnormal response to an
abnormal problem of chronic stress and chronic
inflammation. It happens when your immune
system loses its ability to distinguish healthy
tissues from diseased tissues – so it attacks
them both.
Consider two examples of auto-immunity: lupus
and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Lupus causes
inflammation in all the internal organs, and as
a result, your immune system attacks the organs.
Eventually, the organs can be destroyed by your
own immune system. In RA, healthy joints are
attacked as though they were diseased; good
cartilage is destroyed along with bad. Some-
times, there is no bad cartilage at all: your
immune system just thinks that there is, and
destroys all of the joints.
Increasingly, the medical community is
looking at chronic inflammation as the real
issue behind many serious diseases. I’d like
to emphasize again: inflammation itself is a
normal, healthy response. It’s when the immune
system gets “stuck” in this defense mode that
inflammation becomes chronic, and that’s
when action is needed.
Reduce stress, increase nutrients
While there are no quick fixes for a struggling
immune system, repair can be accomplished
through stress reduction and intense nutrition.
Many doctors advocate taking a multi-vitamin
or multi-nutrient supplement, along with an
antioxidant complex and an Omega-3
supplement.
Remember, the immune system is part of a
complex interaction with your brain and other
immune cells. They “talk” with each other,
learn from each other and act to keep us alive
and well under difficult circumstances. Rather
than wait for an “invader” to attack, your
immune system compensates for an infinite
number of possibilities, and makes a decision
on the best strategy to keep you functioning
in whatever stressful condition you may be.
Your current health is an expression of your
immune system’s best effort to interact with
your environment, both internal and external,
to find and maintain a balance. No wonder
some people call it the king of the body’s
super systems!

For a long time, medical science has known
that the human brain changes with age: it
literally erodes, or loses volume, over time.
Statistics from the 1970s and ‘80s found
brain erosion (sometimes up to 25%) only
in people over age 50. Just a few years
ago, however, a major study conducted by
Washington University in St. Louis, MO,
detected brain volume loss as early as age 30.
And, the researchers also found that this
brain erosion often leads to mental confusion
and memory loss.
More recently (just a few months ago),
researchers at Wayne State University’s
Department of Psychology added to this
growing body of studies with another finding:
the speed of brain erosion, and the brain
regions affected, varies widely, even among
healthy people. Although this study didn’t look
at the reasons for these variations, I could make
an educated guess that Vitamin B-12 might
have been a factor. It’s established medical fact
that Vitamin B-12 plays a big role in mental
sharpness, memory, mood and energy.
Correct a B-12 deficiency, correct
memory loss?
No less an authority than Harvard Medical
School plainly endorses the use of B-12 to treat
memory loss caused by a deficiency of B-12.
The prestigious school supports these findings:
•	 A lack of Vitamin B-12 can cause perma-
nent damage to brain cells
•	 Vitamin B-12 deficiency is among the
reversible causes of memory loss (along
with stress and disease)
•	 Addressing B-12 deficiency is a treatment
for memory loss
•	 Addressing B-12 deficiency early can
help bring back lost memory function
•	 Ignoring B-12 deficiency can worsen
memory loss
There’s more evidence pointing to the value
of B-12 in helping protect against brain issues
among younger people. According to the
National Institutes of Health, one study
suggests that B-12 deficiency affects a much
broader age range than many have thought.
The study, published in the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition, pointed to three different age
groups found to have about the same deficiency
in blood levels of B-12: those 65 and over,
those ages 50-64, and those ages 26-49. That’s
right: People as young as 26 turned out to be
as B-12 deficient as some people over 65.
Across ages, supplement users
have better results
The study of B-12 deficiency across three age
groups turned up another important finding:
“…those who did not take a supplement
containing Vitamin B-12 were twice as likely
to be Vitamin B-12 deficient as supplement
users, regardless of age group.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) states
that “Health is a state of complete physical,
mental and social well-being and not merely

The scope of the problem
Up to 85% of the people who visit a doctor for

ou might say that Cheryl Earl really lives

hen it comes to inflammation,

1 bunch broccoli
3 cloves garlic, minced
6 cups water
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 tablespoons tamari soy sauce
5-inch piece fresh ginger, finely grated
Tarragon or basil for garnish
Wash and cut broccoli into florets. Peel
the stems and cut into ½-inch pieces.
Add 6 cups water to a pot and bring to
a boil. Add broccoli and quick boil for
about 3 minutes. Remove from water
and rinse quickly with cool water. Heat
skillet with oil; add garlic and sauté for
a few seconds before adding broccoli.
Sauté broccoli and garlic, adding tamari
soy sauce and ginger.
1 large head cauliflower, broken into
medium florets
3 tablespoons grapeseed oil
2 tablespoons curry powder
2 medium tomatoes, coarsely chopped
¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper
¼ teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro or
parsley for garnish
1. Fit a large saucepan with a steamer
insert and several inches of water.
Bring to a boil. Add the cauliflower,
cover the pan, and steam the cauli-
flower for 6 minutes or until it is not
quite tender (it will cook more later).
2. With a slotted spoon, lift the cauli-
flower from the pan and transfer
to a plate.
3. In a large skillet, heat the oil. When
it is hot, add the curry and cook,
stirring constantly for 1 minute.
Stir in the tomatoes, salt, red pepper
and water. Cook, stirring, for
3 minutes more.
4. Add the cauliflower and stir well until
the florets are coated with the sauce.
Cover the pan and continue cooking,
stirring several times, for 3 minutes,
or until the cauliflower is cooked
through. Taste for seasoning, add
more sea salt, if you like, and sprinkle
with cilantro or parsley.

Tips for worry-free fun
School is out, swimming suits are ready, grills
are firing up and the camping trip is just around
the corner. These all add up to one thing:
summertime! As you prepare for some well-
deserved “r and r,” play it safe with these
summer safety tips.
Splish-splash safely
Swimming pools and natural waterways attract
millions of people each year with their promise
of cool relief from the summer sun. However,
carelessness can result in injuries – even death.
Drowning is the second leading cause of all
unintentional injury deaths in children aged
1-14 years and the seventh leading cause of
unintentional injury for all ages. Observe these
water-safety tips from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention as you enjoy one of
summer’s most refreshing pastimes:
•	 Designate a responsible adult to watch
children swimming or playing in or
around water.
•	 Don’t swim alone. Select swimming sites that
have lifeguards whenever possible.
•	 Avoid alcohol before or during swimming,
boating or water skiing. Do not drink while
supervising children.
•	 Remove pool toys from the pool and
surrounding areas immediately after use.
These toys may encourage children to
enter the pool area or lean over the pool
and potentially fall in.
•	 Use U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets
when boating, regardless of distance to
be traveled, size of boat or swimming
ability of boaters.
Seek shelter from the sun
Although fun in the sun is a central part of
summer, it can come at a high cost. Learn about
the dangers of too much sun exposure and how
you can protect yourself on pages 14-15.
Avoid the bugs and the bees
Humans aren’t the only ones who will enjoy the
great outdoors this summer: mosquitoes, bees
and all sorts of creepy crawlies may join you in
your outdoor adventure. Take precautions to
avoid their bites and stings.
•	Ticks – Usually found in wooded or grassy
areas, ticks are mostly harmless but their bites
may cause Lyme Disease. To avoid any
tick-related problems, use insect repellent and
check yourself and your children for ticks
before bedtime. If you find one, remove it with
tweezers, put it in a plastic bag and throw it
away. The CDC recommends cleansing the
area with antiseptic. Early removal is impor-
tant; ticks generally have to be on the skin for
36 hours or more to transmit Lyme Disease.
•	Mosquitoes – Another summertime pest,
mosquitoes can create itching with their bites
as well as transmit West Nile Virus.
Although the virus may cause only mild
symptoms in otherwise healthy people, it can
be serious for the elderly and those with
compromised immune systems. Use an insect
repellent to keep mosquitoes away. For itch
relief, try topical anti-itch cream or over-the-
counter antihistamines.
•	Bees – To keep bees away, avoid using scented
soaps or perfumes and wear light-colored
clothing. Cover food, drinks and garbage. If
stung, scrape the stinger away in a side-to-side
motion with a credit card or fingernail. Wash
the area with soap and water and watch
closely for signs of an allergic reaction.
By taking some simple precautionary steps, you
can have a safe, fun-filled summer!

or all the fear of cancers
of the lung, colon, breast,
pancreas and so on, the
cancer you are most likely
to get is skin cancer: it is the most
common form of cancer in the
United States. Learn more about
skin cancer and how you can help
protect against it.
Skin: the biggest organ of your body
If taken off the body, your skin would weigh
between six and nine pounds, and have a surface
area of about two square yards. It is the largest
organ of your body. Your skin protects you from
bacteria and viruses that can cause infections,
helps you sense the outside world, such as
whether it is hot or cold, wet or dry, and regu-
lates your body temperature.
Your skin has two layers: the epidermis (outer
layer) and the dermis (inner layer). The
epidermis is made up of two layers of cells: on
top are the squamous cells, with basal cells
below. Cells called melanocytes are also found in
the epidermis. These cells produce melanin, a
brown pigment that gives your skin color.
The dermis is made up of blood vessels, hair
follicles, and glands that produce sweat and an
oily substance called sebum, which helps prevent
the skin from drying out.
Due to its vital, protective nature, it is important
to keep your skin healthy by avoiding the risks
associated with skin cancer. Just because your
skin is “external” doesn’t mean skin cancer isn’t
as harmful as “internal” cancers.
Two layers of epidermis=two types
of skin cancer
The two most common forms of skin cancer are
basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carci-
noma. They are known together as
non-melanoma cancers. Melanoma, a type of
skin cancer which begins deeper in the skin, is
less common than non-melanoma cancers but
much more dangerous: it is the leading cause of
death from skin disease. This article will focus
on squamous cell carcinoma: skin cancer of the
first layer of cells in the first layer of skin.
The biggest risk factors for getting skin
cancer are:
•	Having light or fair skin, light-colored eyes,
and naturally red or blonde hair
•	Prolonged, unprotected exposure to sunlight
(ultraviolet radiation)
•	A family history of skin cancer, especially
melanoma
•	Age: non-melanoma skin cancers are more
common after age 40
•	Having lots of moles, large or irregular moles
Skin cancer risks
Squamous cell carcinomas account for about
20% of diagnosed skin cancers. If detected
early, chances of recovery are excellent. Most

squamous cell tumors can be cured if they are
removed promptly. Cancers of this sort are most
commonly found on the ears, face and mouth,
and seem to appear more frequently on older
people. One reason this form of cancer appears
on those parts of the body is because of their
frequent exposure to sunlight. Squamous cell
carcinomas can also develop in scars and skin
ulcers, and less commonly, from pre-cancerous
lesions called actinic keratoses. These lesions
can appear as rough, flat pink spots or areas
on the skin.
Detection
Detection of skin cancer early on is, like all
cancers, central to successful treatment. You can
perform a monthly self-examination at home to
detect early signs of skin cancer.
•	 Look for a change in the size, color, shape
or texture of any moles, freckles, bumps or
birthmarks, or any changes in your skin.
•	 Exams should take place after a bath or
shower, preferably in front of a full-length
mirror and in good lighting.
•	 Be sure to have someone check your back for
moles and lesions, or use a hand mirror, and
include a skin cancer screening in your
regular doctor visits.
•	 Don’t wait for any pain at the site of any
discoloration; pain is rarely a symptom
of cancer.
If you find any new moles, changes to old moles,
or areas that resemble the photos above, see a
doctor immediately. Most times, doctors will
perform a nearly painless biopsy (tissue removal)
of the area under a local anesthetic and have the
skin analyzed for cancer cells. If skin cancer is
detected, in many cases the affected area or mole
can be removed in a doctor’s office, with no side
effects or prolonged treatment. Cancer that has
spread, however,
may require more significant treatment,
including radiation or chemotherapy. Still, in
most cases surgery is the preferred method of
getting rid of the cancerous cells.
Help protect against skin cancer
The best way to protect against skin cancer is to
reduce your exposure to sunlight, especially
midday sun. If you do go out in the sun:
•	Avoid tanning and sunburn
•	Use sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection
factor) rating of at least 30
•	Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before
going outside and reapply frequently
•	Wear a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves
and pants
•	Wear sunscreen in the winter, as well
•	Use extra caution near water, snow or sand,
as they reflect the sun
•	Check the UV index in your area and
plan accordingly
The UV index
The UV (ultraviolet light) index appears in
most newspapers and television weather reports.
It is a measurement of how much UV radiation
is glaring down on you on that day, and tells
you how likely you are to be exposed to the
damaging radiation. UV light causes damage
to the DNA in your skin cells, which can lead to
skin cancer. Before planning outdoor activities,
check the index to see which safety precautions
you should take that day. Remember, reduced
sun exposure is your best bet for protecting
against skin cancer.

every year in the United States alone.

New findings in health and wellness
Early balding good news for the prostate; may cut cancer risk
Seattle, Washington
Men who experience hair loss before age 30 may have a reduced risk of prostate cancer, according to a study
reported in Cancer Epidemiology.
Researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle evaluated 999 men, aged 35 to 74,
who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2002 and 2005. They compared them to 942 men without
cancer and discovered that those who experienced male pattern baldness before the age of 30 had a 29% risk
reduction for prostate cancer. A 45% risk reduction was discovered for men who were balding at both the top of
the head and the forehead while in their 30s.
Researchers say that further research is needed to determine the link between hair loss and prostate cancer. Both
hormones and genes may play a role.
Exercise may help prevent mental decline
Rochester, Minnesota
Exercise in midlife may guard against mild cognitive (mental) impairment, according to a study in the January
2010 Archives of Neurology.
Researchers studied 1,324 people who were part of the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging. Participants filled out an
exercise questionnaire between 2006 and 2008 and were assessed by an expert panel to determine if they had
normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment.
It was determined that 198 participants had mild cognitive impairment while 1,126 individuals did not. Based
on questionnaire responses, researchers discovered that those who participated in moderate exercise in midlife or
later were less likely to have mental decline. Specifically, those who exercised in midlife had a 39% reduced risk
of mental decline, while those who started later in life had a 32% reduced risk. Researchers found no significant
difference in cognitive decline between those who participated in moderate exercise versus those who participated
in vigorous exercise.
Massage and music are equals when it comes to easing anxiety
Seattle, Washington
When researchers at Group Health Research Institute set out to assess how effective massage is for patients with
generalized anxiety disorder, they found that massage reduced the symptoms of anxiety by 50%. But they also
discovered that simple relaxation in a room alone with soft, soothing music had the exact same effect.
“We were surprised to find that the benefits of massage were no greater than those of the same number of
sessions of ‘thermotherapy’(heat therapy) or listening to relaxing music,” said Karen J. Sherman, PhD, MPH, a
senior investigator at Group Health Research Institute. “This suggests that the benefits of massage may be due
to a generalized relaxation response.”
Researchers assigned 68 patients to one of three groups: the first group received 10 one-hour massages,
the second engaged in deep breathing, and the third received thermotherapy – having their arms and legs
periodically wrapped with heating pads and warm towels. All three groups received their treatments lying down
in a softly lit room, with quiet music playing in the background.
Patients in all groups reported a decrease in anxiety. They also reported fewer symptoms of depression and less
worry and disability.

edications intended to ease
pain certainly have their
place, but they’re ripe for
overuse and abuse. In fact,
the non-medical use of pain medications,
both prescription and over-the-counter
(OTC), was involved in about 324,000
Emergency Room visits in a recent year.
That statistic from the Drug Abuse
Warning Network joins other figures that
point to an alarming trend: the dangerous
misuse of painkillers.
While the term “illicit drugs” may suggest heroin,
cocaine or other substances, the National Survey on
Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an annual report
from the U.S. government, has a broader definition:
it says that after marijuana use, taking prescription
pain relievers without a doctor’s prescription is “the
second most common form of illicit drug use in the
United States.” Drugs such as hydrocodone, oxyco-
done, morphine and others can help reduce pain
and suffering, but they can have severe side effects
and lead to addiction.
In the most recent year for which statistics are
available (2007), NSDUH found that two age
groups were showing increases in painkiller drug
abuse: young adults aged 18 to 25, and adults aged
26 and older.
Illegal markets almost everywhere
You don’t have to go to a big city to find illegal
painkillers. Data from the National Drug
Intelligence Center’s National Drug Threat
Survey reveal that almost 80% of state and local
law enforcement agencies report either high or
moderate availability of “illegally diverted pharma-
ceuticals.” More facts and figures:
•	 Over 20% of Americans aged 12 or older report
non-medical use of any prescription painkiller at
some point in their lives.
•	 Some 6.2 million Americans aged 12 or older
(2.5% of the population) report they are currently
using painkillers for non-medical use.
Three types most commonly abused
Three classes of prescription painkillers are the most
commonly abused:
1.	Opioids, which are most commonly prescribed for
pain. These include codeine, oxycodone and
morphine.
2.	CNS (central nervous system) depressants, used
to treat anxiety and sleep disorders. These include
barbiturates and benzodiazepines.
3.	Stimulants prescribed for sleep disorders, atten-
tion deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and
obesity. These include dextroamphetamine
and methylphenidate.
Naturally, these and all other prescription medica-
tions should be taken only as directed by a
healthcare provider. They are potentially dangerous,
and should never be shared, or left where they might
be sampled or taken by others. But prescription
painkillers are just part of the story. OTC medicines
need to be used with care, too.
OTC also has potential dangers
Although OTC medicines are freely available, they
should be used carefully, too. According to the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are
two basic types of OTC pain relievers: some contain
acetaminophen, and others contain non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).
While acetaminophen is a very common pain
reliever and fever reducer, taking too much of this
active ingredient can lead to liver damage. NSAIDS,
also commonly used for pain and fever, include
aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, and ketoprofen.
NSAIDS can cause stomach bleeding, and also pose
a risk of kidney damage, especially for those over 60,
or anyone with high blood pressure, heart disease or
pre-existing kidney disease.

I have been wanting to applaud the monthly VitaJournal for some time.
I’m 72 years old, in good physical health (thank God), but at the age of 60

I
t seems almost
like yesterday
that my
husband and I,
along with our two
children, stood on
the porch of the
foster home where our “soon to
be adopted son” was living. We
were a little apprehensive as we
knocked on the door not
knowing what to expect.
I will never forget hearing a
high-pitched voice squealing
with delight as he came running
down the stairs, yelling, “My
daddy’s come, my daddy’s come!”
Dony came bounding out through
the open door and flew into the
arms of my husband. We weren’t
prepared for his robust enthusiasm
for having a daddy!
There is a big difference between paternity and
fatherhood. And a bigger difference in “being
a dad.” A dad demonstrates that he loves his
children by interacting with them, letting
them know that they are important to him
and that they matter.
Both in my personal life and professionally, I have
observed the extreme importance of a dad in a
child’s life. In 2002, I started a research institute
studying behavioral health. In each applicant’s
questionnaire we asked, “Who did you feel closer
to; your father or your mother?” In over three
years of research with both male and female
participants, only one answered “my father.”
I was curious to know why this one respondent, a
woman, felt closer to her father, so I asked her to
describe her relationship with him. She said that
her dad would always take time to sit down with
her in the evening and talk to her about her day.
Before he left he would tell her that he loved her.
She said it couldn’t have been more than 15 or 20
minutes but in those few moments he made her
feel that she really mattered.
Before the research participants finished their
programs, I would ask each one of them what
they wished their fathers would have done
differently. It was unanimous. Both men and
women wished their fathers had:
•	 Spent more one-on-one time with them
•	 Taken the time to really listen  
•	 Said, ”I love you”
•	 Made them feel that they mattered
In our society, there are many dynamics that
interfere with being a dad: troubled marriages,
separation, divorce and relocation. Because of
these changes, many men are being forced to
develop family relationships that are quite
different from those they had with their own
fathers. What worked very well for their fathers
20 or 30 years ago may not work at all with the
kinds of challenges fathers face today.
The level of personal commitment that kids
require is challenging, and sometimes even
overwhelming. Yes, it is far easier to be a father
than a dad.
Yet, if you are a father trying your best to be a
dad, it’s never too late to say, “I love you.” It’s
never too late to spend quality time talking
and listening to your children whether they
are adults or small children. The message you
want to convey to your children is … I want
to be your dad.

Father’s Day thoughts
on God the Father

mother, that your days may
be long upon the land which
the Lord your God is giving

God the Father is a tough
act to follow for us mortals.
If the approach of Father’s
Day brings up conflicting
feelings for you, we have a lot in common. Or
at least we did, until I reconciled with my own
father after a 20-year separation.
My father was mostly absent from my life,
and as I grew to adulthood in an established
church, I never really knew what was meant
when people talked about “Father God,” or
“Our Heavenly Father.” In my world, a father
was someone you had to perform for and try
harder to please every day, and always worry
you hadn’t done enough. So the idea of a
supreme being was yet another authority
figure I was supposed to perform for. When
you add in Jesus Christ, and realize that His
son on earth was perfect, I just thought “I
can’t compete!”
If God won’t accept me, why bother?
That same drive to perform and please really
ruled me until almost mid-life. I was never
“good enough” for my wife and children; they
were never good enough, and so on. It was a
convenient excuse for not knowing God
intimately: I could never just be accepted for
myself, I thought, so why bother?
That thinking all changed one day, when I
was advising a young couple about a business
decision. To be honest, I resented them a little.
They were being handed an opportunity on a
silver platter from the young man’s parents,
and I arrogantly opened my Bible, pointed
to a verse at random, and said, “There’s your
message from God.” The young man gave
arrogance right back to me, opening the Bible
to another page and saying, “That’s for you.”
You know what the passage was? “I am crucified
with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but
Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live
in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God,
Who loved me, and gave Himself for me.”
– Galatians 2:20
I cried. I cried because I realized in that
moment that no matter how many times He is
disappointed, He continues to love us. No
matter how flawed and “not good enough” we
are, He sacrificed His son for us. In that
moment, I understood that God the Father’s
love is unconditional and everlasting. And I
realized that I could have that special closeness
with God the Father that I did not have with
my natural father.
Do you have, or did you have, a troubled
relationship with your earthly father? Then
you, too, might have trouble accepting the
idea of God’s eternal love. I’d like to suggest
that on this Father’s Day, you do what you can
to repair and re-build that relationship. If your
father has passed on, maybe you can work on
accepting that the relationship was flawed
and human, and not let it keep you from
closeness with God.
Today I’m blessed to have my first-born
daughter Monica close to me. We often ride
our horses together, and this is very special,
because when she was growing up I was trav-
eling all over the world. I missed so much in
her early life, and feel so fortunate to have time
now with this precious young woman. I can’t
reclaim the years, but I can try every day to let
her know I love her not for what she does or
doesn’t do, but just because she is.
God the Father loves us that way: just because
we are, with all our shortcomings. When
you “get” this, my hope for you is that you
also realize there’s no reason not to love
Him back.

Paying the price for
an active life
Last summer was an
especially difficult time,
Pat relates. “I had been
barrel racing during the
entire summer, traveling to
different states to compete,
but was in pain all the time.
I had a hard time turning my

en’s Health Week occurs this
year from June 14 to 22, and
hopefully it will provide an
important wake-up call for many men.
That’s because the overwhelming
weight of evidence shows that too many
men are failing the good health test 52
weeks a year.
It begins with such basics as seeing a doctor on a
regular basis. According to a recent Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report,
women are 33% more likely than men to visit
a doctor. The negative health news for men
doesn’t end there. The Men’s Health Network
(MHN) states that men die at significantly
higher rates than women from the top 10 causes
of death, including:
•	 Heart disease
•	 Cancer
•	 Stroke
•	 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
•	 Accidents
•	 Pneumonia and influenza
•	 Diabetes
•	 Suicide
•	 Kidney disease
•	 Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis
Men also die younger than women by an average
of over five years. Why is that? According to Jean
Bonhomme, M.D., an MHN board member, “Any
person who doesn’t regularly screen for major
health problems is at greater risk. For example, if
you don’t get your cholesterol or blood pressure
checked when these levels are starting to rise in
your 20s or 30s, what do you think is going to
happen when you’re 50?” Bonhomme also places
part of the blame on a society which expects boys
to be tough and ignore pain. However, when those
boys become men, that little pain can get worse or
signal an even more serious issue.
The five top preventable and treatable
causes of death
1. Heart disease
Although heart disease is the leading killer of
both men and women, almost twice as many men
eventually die from it. According to the CDC,
one in four men has some form of heart disease.
Men often tend to develop heart disease at an
earlier age than women. So, making the right
lifestyle choices (eating healthier and exercising
more) can help men reduce heart disease risk.
2. Stroke
Stroke is the third leading killer in the country
after heart disease and all forms of cancer.
The incidence rate of stroke is 1.25 times
greater in men than in women. One of the
most important risk factors for stroke is high
blood pressure and managing it is a crucial
stroke prevention factor. Once again, the same
lifestyle choices that reduce the risk of heart
disease can also lower stroke risk.
3. Suicide and depression
The Men’s Health Network reports that men are
four times more likely to commit suicide than
women. They are often less likely to show depres-
sion and recognize they’re in trouble. To help men
with depression and to reduce suicide risk, doctors,
loved ones and men themselves need to deal
honestly and openly with depression and
suicidal impulses.
4. Lung cancer
Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer for both
men and women, claiming more lives than
prostate, colon and breast cancer combined.
Tobacco products are responsible for 90% of
lung cancer cases. So, if you’re a smoker, stop
now and your chances of getting lung cancer
begin to diminish.
5. Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found
in men. The good news is that prostate cancer is
treatable if found in early stages. The American
Cancer Society suggests that healthy men have a
prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and
digital rectal exam each year after age 50. Men
who are at high risk, such as African-Americans,
or those with a family history of prostate cancer,
should begin testing earlier.
If more men speak up about their health concerns
and take better care of themselves, there will no
longer be a “silent crisis.” Both men and their
loved ones will then be able to enjoy all the
benefits of a longer, healthier life.

  • 3. ON MY MIND EDITOR’s NOTE T his month, June 21, brings us the first day of summer, and like many people, for me summer always triggers memories – mostly of my own childhood. Recently my youngest daughter told me she had purchased an ice cream maker so she could make her own fun summer sorbet recipes. It’s funny how a word, an image, a song or even a smell can take you right back to an exact moment in time.   • 4. 4  l  VITAJOURNAL trivita.com Defense, Invaders, Protection: These words that come up when describing the body’s immune system sound militaristic, and with good reason. This extraordinary, complex system is our front line, every day, in the battle against the things that don’t belong in our bodies. Whether it’s an object, an organism or a tissue, the immune system is in charge of recognizing it as friend or foe, and charging into action if the visitor is considered hostile. One of the best descriptions of the immune system, I think, comes from Immunologist William Paul of the National Institutes of Health. He says, “The immune system has a phenomenal ability for dealing with infor- mation for learning and memory, for creating and storing and using that information.” Sometimes called the king of the body’s super systems, the immune system has an amazing ability to assess molecules that have never been in the body before, and decide on the appropriate action. Medical science is focusing increasingly on the role that inflammation plays in disease, and I’d like to focus here on the immune system’s role in “deploying” and managing the body’s inflammation response. Inflammation: why and how A key element of the immune system is the lymphatic system, because it comes in direct contact with every cell. So if any cell anywhere in the body is “in trouble,” it’s the lymphatic system that answers the call. The lymphatic system is not pumped by the heart, but by the movement of the lungs. That’s why, when a person practices deep abdominal breathing, they’re stimulating the system. And it’s also why, when we are stressed, an interplay of glands and organs makes our breathing shallow – and puts our lymphatic system into stagnation. This explains why people under stress have higher rates of every- thing from viral infection to serious disease. When the lymphatic system is stagnant, cells begin to suffocate because nutrients can’t get in and waste can’t get out. The body has to find other means to cope with this potential infection, and it turns to inflammation. Inflammation is a normal response to an abnormal condition, and it’s part of how our bodies cope. Let’s look at how inflammation works for us, helping us to heal when we have tissue injury from, for example, a sprained finger: 1. Redness. An injured area needs an increased supply of nutrients and proteins carried in the blood. So, blood supply increases, and the tissue turns red. 2. Swelling. The injured area is bathed in healing proteins and substances to control bleeding, as well as an increased supply for transport of waste. This causes the injured area to swell.   • 5. 3. Pain. The injured area needs to be protected. We instinctively guard an injury because we feel or anticipate pain. 4. Heat. The damaged tissue becomes weak- ened, and so is susceptible to infection. White blood cells rush to the area and defend the fragile cells from microbes (very broadly, germs). Heat or fever in the damaged area is a sign that this is working. 5. Loss of function. This process is accompa- nied by a reduction in function of the injured area until it is healed. If the stress of the injury continues, so does the inflammation. This launches a cascade of inflammation leading to infection, leading to allergy, leading to irritation, leading to more inflammation and so on. Chronic stress, chronic inflammation Eventually, an immune system under stress and deprived of the proper nutrients and nurturing will form an auto-immune response. Auto- immunity is an abnormal response to an abnormal problem of chronic stress and chronic inflammation. It happens when your immune system loses its ability to distinguish healthy tissues from diseased tissues – so it attacks them both. Consider two examples of auto-immunity: lupus and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Lupus causes inflammation in all the internal organs, and as a result, your immune system attacks the organs. Eventually, the organs can be destroyed by your own immune system. In RA, healthy joints are attacked as though they were diseased; good cartilage is destroyed along with bad. Some- times, there is no bad cartilage at all: your immune system just thinks that there is, and destroys all of the joints. Increasingly, the medical community is looking at chronic inflammation as the real issue behind many serious diseases. I’d like to emphasize again: inflammation itself is a normal, healthy response. It’s when the immune system gets “stuck” in this defense mode that inflammation becomes chronic, and that’s when action is needed. Reduce stress, increase nutrients While there are no quick fixes for a struggling immune system, repair can be accomplished through stress reduction and intense nutrition. Many doctors advocate taking a multi-vitamin or multi-nutrient supplement, along with an antioxidant complex and an Omega-3 supplement. Remember, the immune system is part of a complex interaction with your brain and other immune cells. They “talk” with each other, learn from each other and act to keep us alive and well under difficult circumstances.   • 6. For a long time, medical science has known that the human brain changes with age: it literally erodes, or loses volume, over time. Statistics from the 1970s and ‘80s found brain erosion (sometimes up to 25%) only in people over age 50. Just a few years ago, however, a major study conducted by Washington University in St. Louis, MO, detected brain volume loss as early as age 30. And, the researchers also found that this brain erosion often leads to mental confusion and memory loss. More recently (just a few months ago), researchers at Wayne State University’s Department of Psychology added to this growing body of studies with another finding: the speed of brain erosion, and the brain regions affected, varies widely, even among healthy people. Although this study didn’t look at the reasons for these variations, I could make an educated guess that Vitamin B-12 might have been a factor. It’s established medical fact that Vitamin B-12 plays a big role in mental sharpness, memory, mood and energy. Correct a B-12 deficiency, correct memory loss? No less an authority than Harvard Medical School plainly endorses the use of B-12 to treat memory loss caused by a deficiency of B-12. The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, pointed to three different age groups found to have about the same deficiency in blood levels of B-12: those 65 and over, those ages 50-64, and those ages 26-49. That’s right: People as young as 26 turned out to be as B-12 deficient as some people over 65. Peel the stems and cut into ½-inch pieces. Add 6 cups water to a pot and bring to a boil. Add broccoli and quick boil for about 3 minutes. Remove from water and rinse quickly with cool water. Heat skillet with oil; add garlic and sauté for a few seconds before adding broccoli. Sauté broccoli and garlic, adding tamari soy sauce and ginger. 1 large head cauliflower, broken into medium florets 3 tablespoons grapeseed oil 2 tablespoons curry powder 2 medium tomatoes, coarsely chopped ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper ¼ teaspoon sea salt 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro or parsley for garnish 1. Fit a large saucepan with a steamer insert and several inches of water. Bring to a boil. Add the cauliflower, cover the pan, and steam the cauli- flower for 6 minutes or until it is not quite tender (it will cook more later). 2. With a slotted spoon, lift the cauli- flower from the pan and transfer to a plate. 3. In a large skillet, heat the oil. When it is hot, add the curry and cook, stirring constantly for 1 minute. Stir in the tomatoes, salt, red pepper and water. Cook, stirring, for 3 minutes more. 4. Add the cauliflower and stir well until the florets are coated with the sauce. Cover the pan and continue cooking, stirring several times, for 3 minutes, or until the cauliflower is cooked through. These all add up to one thing: summertime! As you prepare for some well- deserved “r and r,” play it safe with these summer safety tips. Splish-splash safely Swimming pools and natural waterways attract millions of people each year with their promise of cool relief from the summer sun. However, carelessness can result in injuries – even death. Drowning is the second leading cause of all unintentional injury deaths in children aged 1-14 years and the seventh leading cause of unintentional injury for all ages. Observe these water-safety tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as you enjoy one of summer’s most refreshing pastimes: • Designate a responsible adult to watch children swimming or playing in or around water. • Don’t swim alone. Select swimming sites that have lifeguards whenever possible. • Avoid alcohol before or during swimming, boating or water skiing. Do not drink while supervising children. • Remove pool toys from the pool and surrounding areas immediately after use. These toys may encourage children to enter the pool area or lean over the pool and potentially fall in. • Use U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets when boating, regardless of distance to be traveled, size of boat or swimming ability of boaters. Seek shelter from the sun Although fun in the sun is a central part of summer, it can come at a high cost. Learn about the dangers of too much sun exposure and how you can protect yourself on pages 14-15. Avoid the bugs and the bees Humans aren’t the only ones who will enjoy the great outdoors this summer: mosquitoes, bees and all sorts of creepy crawlies may join you in your outdoor adventure. Take precautions to avoid their bites and stings. • Ticks – Usually found in wooded or grassy areas, ticks are mostly harmless but their bites may cause Lyme Disease. To avoid any tick-related problems, use insect repellent and check yourself and your children for ticks before bedtime. If you find one, remove it with tweezers, put it in a plastic bag and throw it away. The CDC recommends cleansing the area with antiseptic. Early removal is impor- tant; ticks generally have to be on the skin for 36 hours or more to transmit Lyme Disease. • Mosquitoes – Another summertime pest, mosquitoes can create itching with their bites as well as transmit West Nile Virus. Although the virus may cause only mild symptoms in otherwise healthy people, it can be serious for the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Use an insect repellent to keep mosquitoes away. For itch relief, try topical anti-itch cream or over-the- counter antihistamines. • Bees – To keep bees away, avoid using scented soaps or perfumes and wear light-colored clothing. Cover food, drinks and garbage. If stung, scrape the stinger away in a side-to-side motion with a credit card or fingernail. Wash the area with soap and water and watch closely for signs of an allergic reaction. By taking some simple precautionary steps, you can have a safe, fun-filled summer!   • 14. 14  l  VITAJOURNAL trivita.com F or all the fear of cancers of the lung, colon, breast, pancreas and so on, the cancer you are most likely to get is skin cancer: it is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Learn more about skin cancer and how you can help protect against it. Skin: the biggest organ of your body If taken off the body, your skin would weigh between six and nine pounds, and have a surface area of about two square yards. It is the largest organ of your body. Your skin protects you from bacteria and viruses that can cause infections, helps you sense the outside world, such as whether it is hot or cold, wet or dry, and regu- lates your body temperature. Your skin has two layers: the epidermis (outer layer) and the dermis (inner layer). The epidermis is made up of two layers of cells: on top are the squamous cells, with basal cells below. Cells called melanocytes are also found in the epidermis. These cells produce melanin, a brown pigment that gives your skin color. The dermis is made up of blood vessels, hair follicles, and glands that produce sweat and an oily substance called sebum, which helps prevent the skin from drying out. Due to its vital, protective nature, it is important to keep your skin healthy by avoiding the risks associated with skin cancer. Just because your skin is “external” doesn’t mean skin cancer isn’t as harmful as “internal” cancers. Two layers of epidermis=two types of skin cancer The two most common forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carci- noma. They are known together as non-melanoma cancers. Melanoma, a type of skin cancer which begins deeper in the skin, is less common than non-melanoma cancers but much more dangerous: it is the leading cause of death from skin disease. This article will focus on squamous cell carcinoma: skin cancer of the first layer of cells in the first layer of skin. The biggest risk factors for getting skin cancer are: • Having light or fair skin, light-colored eyes, and naturally red or blonde hair • Prolonged, unprotected exposure to sunlight (ultraviolet radiation) • A family history of skin cancer, especially melanoma • Age: non-melanoma skin cancers are more common after age 40 • Having lots of moles, large or irregular moles Skin cancer risks Squamous cell carcinomas account for about 20% of diagnosed skin cancers. If detected early, chances of recovery are excellent. Most Squamous cell carcinomas account for about 20% of diagnosed skin cancers… early detection brings excellent chances of recovery. Cancers of this sort are most commonly found on the ears, face and mouth, and seem to appear more frequently on older people. One reason this form of cancer appears on those parts of the body is because of their frequent exposure to sunlight. Squamous cell carcinomas can also develop in scars and skin ulcers, and less commonly, from pre-cancerous lesions called actinic keratoses. These lesions can appear as rough, flat pink spots or areas on the skin. Detection Detection of skin cancer early on is, like all cancers, central to successful treatment. You can perform a monthly self-examination at home to detect early signs of skin cancer. • Look for a change in the size, color, shape or texture of any moles, freckles, bumps or birthmarks, or any changes in your skin. • Exams should take place after a bath or shower, preferably in front of a full-length mirror and in good lighting. • Be sure to have someone check your back for moles and lesions, or use a hand mirror, and include a skin cancer screening in your regular doctor visits. • Don’t wait for any pain at the site of any discoloration; pain is rarely a symptom of cancer. If you find any new moles, changes to old moles, or areas that resemble the photos above, see a doctor immediately. Most times, doctors will perform a nearly painless biopsy (tissue removal) of the area under a local anesthetic and have the skin analyzed for cancer cells. If skin cancer is detected, in many cases the affected area or mole can be removed in a doctor’s office, with no side effects or prolonged treatment. Cancer that has spread, however, may require more significant treatment, including radiation or chemotherapy. Still, in most cases surgery is the preferred method of getting rid of the cancerous cells. Help protect against skin cancer The best way to protect against skin cancer is to reduce your exposure to sunlight, especially midday sun. If you do go out in the sun: • Avoid tanning and sunburn • Use sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) rating of at least 30 • Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside and reapply frequently • Wear a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves and pants • Wear sunscreen in the winter, as well • Use extra caution near water, snow or sand, as they reflect the sun • Check the UV index in your area and plan accordingly The UV index The UV (ultraviolet light) index appears in most newspapers and television weather reports. It is a measurement of how much UV radiation is glaring down on you on that day, and tells you how likely you are to be exposed to the damaging radiation. UV light causes damage to the DNA in your skin cells, which can lead to skin cancer. Before planning outdoor activities, check the index to see which safety precautions you should take that day. Remember, reduced sun exposure is your best bet for protecting against skin cancer. More than 1 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year in the United States alone.

  • 18. 18  l  VITAJOURNAL trivita.com The Research Desk New findings in health and wellness Early balding good news for the prostate; may cut cancer risk Seattle, Washington Men who experience hair loss before age 30 may have a reduced risk of prostate cancer, according to a study reported in Cancer Epidemiology. Researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle evaluated 999 men, aged 35 to 74, who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2002 and 2005. They compared them to 942 men without cancer and discovered that those who experienced male pattern baldness before the age of 30 had a 29% risk reduction for prostate cancer. A 45% risk reduction was discovered for men who were balding at both the top of the head and the forehead while in their 30s. Researchers say that further research is needed to determine the link between hair loss and prostate cancer. Both hormones and genes may play a role. Exercise may help prevent mental decline Rochester, Minnesota Exercise in midlife may guard against mild cognitive (mental) impairment, according to a study in the January 2010 Archives of Neurology. Researchers studied 1,324 people who were part of the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging. Participants filled out an exercise questionnaire between 2006 and 2008 and were assessed by an expert panel to determine if they had normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment. It was determined that 198 participants had mild cognitive impairment while 1,126 individuals did not. Based on questionnaire responses, researchers discovered that those who participated in moderate exercise in midlife or later were less likely to have mental decline. Specifically, those who exercised in midlife had a 39% reduced risk of mental decline, while those who started later in life had a 32% reduced risk. Researchers found no significant difference in cognitive decline between those who participated in moderate exercise versus those who participated in vigorous exercise. Massage and music are equals when it comes to easing anxiety Seattle, Washington When researchers at Group Health Research Institute set out to assess how effective massage is for patients with generalized anxiety disorder, they found that massage reduced the symptoms of anxiety by 50%. But they also discovered that simple relaxation in a room alone with soft, soothing music had the exact same effect. “We were surprised to find that the benefits of massage were no greater than those of the same number of sessions of ‘thermotherapy’(heat therapy) or listening to relaxing music,” said Karen J. Sherman, PhD, MPH, a senior investigator at Group Health Research Institute. “This suggests that the benefits of massage may be due to a generalized relaxation response.” Researchers assigned 68 patients to one of three groups: the first group received 10 one-hour massages, the second engaged in deep breathing, and the third received thermotherapy – having their arms and legs periodically wrapped with heating pads and warm towels. All three groups received their treatments lying down in a softly lit room, with quiet music playing in the background. Patients in all groups reported a decrease in anxiety. They also reported fewer symptoms of depression and less worry and disability.

In fact, the non-medical use of pain medications, both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC), was involved in about 324,000 Emergency Room visits in a recent year. That statistic from the Drug Abuse Warning Network joins other figures that point to an alarming trend: the dangerous misuse of painkillers. While the term “illicit drugs” may suggest heroin, cocaine or other substances, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an annual report from the U.S. government, has a broader definition: it says that after marijuana use, taking prescription pain relievers without a doctor’s prescription is “the second most common form of illicit drug use in the United States.” Drugs such as hydrocodone, oxyco- done, morphine and others can help reduce pain and suffering, but they can have severe side effects and lead to addiction. In the most recent year for which statistics are available (2007), NSDUH found that two age groups were showing increases in painkiller drug abuse: young adults aged 18 to 25, and adults aged 26 and older. Illegal markets almost everywhere You don’t have to go to a big city to find illegal painkillers. Data from the National Drug Intelligence Center’s National Drug Threat Survey reveal that almost 80% of state and local law enforcement agencies report either high or moderate availability of “illegally diverted pharma- ceuticals.” More facts and figures: • Over 20% of Americans aged 12 or older report non-medical use of any prescription painkiller at some point in their lives. • Some 6.2 million Americans aged 12 or older (2.5% of the population) report they are currently using painkillers for non-medical use. Three types most commonly abused Three classes of prescription painkillers are the most commonly abused: 1. Opioids, which are most commonly prescribed for pain. These include codeine, oxycodone and morphine. 2. CNS (central nervous system) depressants, used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders. These include barbiturates and benzodiazepines. 3. Stimulants prescribed for sleep disorders, atten- tion deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obesity. These include dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate. Naturally, these and all other prescription medica- tions should be taken only as directed by a healthcare provider. They are potentially dangerous, and should never be shared, or left where they might be sampled or taken by others. But prescription painkillers are just part of the story. OTC medicines need to be used with care, too. OTC also has potential dangers Although OTC medicines are freely available, they should be used carefully, too. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are two basic types of OTC pain relievers: some contain acetaminophen, and others contain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). While acetaminophen is a very common pain reliever and fever reducer, taking too much of this active ingredient can lead to liver damage. NSAIDS, also commonly used for pain and fever, include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, and ketoprofen. NSAIDS can cause stomach bleeding, and also pose a risk of kidney damage, especially for those over 60, or anyone with high blood pressure, heart disease or pre-existing kidney disease. She has inspired people around the world to reach within and find their passionate purpose to live a more meaningful life. 22  l  VITAJOURNAL trivita.com I t seems almost like yesterday that my husband and I, along with our two children, stood on the porch of the foster home where our “soon to be adopted son” was living. We were a little apprehensive as we knocked on the door not knowing what to expect. I will never forget hearing a high-pitched voice squealing with delight as he came running down the stairs, yelling, “My daddy’s come, my daddy’s come!” Dony came bounding out through the open door and flew into the arms of my husband. We weren’t prepared for his robust enthusiasm for having a daddy! There is a big difference between paternity and fatherhood. And a bigger difference in “being a dad.” A dad demonstrates that he loves his children by interacting with them, letting them know that they are important to him and that they matter. Both in my personal life and professionally, I have observed the extreme importance of a dad in a child’s life. In 2002, I started a research institute studying behavioral health. In each applicant’s questionnaire we asked, “Who did you feel closer to; your father or your mother?” In over three years of research with both male and female participants, only one answered “my father.” I was curious to know why this one respondent, a woman, felt closer to her father, so I asked her to describe her relationship with him. She said that her dad would always take time to sit down with her in the evening and talk to her about her day. Before he left he would tell her that he loved her. She said it couldn’t have been more than 15 or 20 minutes but in those few moments he made her feel that she really mattered. Before the research participants finished their programs, I would ask each one of them what they wished their fathers would have done differently. It was unanimous. Both men and women wished their fathers had: • Spent more one-on-one time with them • Taken the time to really listen • Said, ”I love you” • Made them feel that they mattered In our society, there are many dynamics that interfere with being a dad: troubled marriages, separation, divorce and relocation. Because of these changes, many men are being forced to develop family relationships that are quite different from those they had with their own fathers. What worked very well for their fathers 20 or 30 years ago may not work at all with the kinds of challenges fathers face today. The level of personal commitment that kids require is challenging, and sometimes even overwhelming. Yes, it is far easier to be a father than a dad. Yet, if you are a father trying your best to be a dad, it’s never too late to say, “I love you.” It’s never too late to spend quality time talking and listening to your children whether they are adults or small children.   • 23. your body, His Temple – 1 Cor. 6:19-20 Father’s Day thoughts on God the Father By Chaplain Gene Henderson Gene Henderson “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.” – Exodus 20:12 God the Father is a tough act to follow for us mortals. If the approach of Father’s Day brings up conflicting feelings for you, we have a lot in common. Or at least we did, until I reconciled with my own father after a 20-year separation. My father was mostly absent from my life, and as I grew to adulthood in an established church, I never really knew what was meant when people talked about “Father God,” or “Our Heavenly Father.” In my world, a father was someone you had to perform for and try harder to please every day, and always worry you hadn’t done enough. So the idea of a supreme being was yet another authority figure I was supposed to perform for. When you add in Jesus Christ, and realize that His son on earth was perfect, I just thought “I can’t compete!” If God won’t accept me, why bother? That same drive to perform and please really ruled me until almost mid-life. I was never “good enough” for my wife and children; they were never good enough, and so on. It was a convenient excuse for not knowing God intimately: I could never just be accepted for myself, I thought, so why bother? That thinking all changed one day, when I was advising a young couple about a business decision. To be honest, I resented them a little. They were being handed an opportunity on a silver platter from the young man’s parents, and I arrogantly opened my Bible, pointed to a verse at random, and said, “There’s your message from God.” The young man gave arrogance right back to me, opening the Bible to another page and saying, “That’s for you.” You know what the passage was? “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, Who loved me, and gave Himself for me.” – Galatians 2:20 I cried. I cried because I realized in that moment that no matter how many times He is disappointed, He continues to love us. No matter how flawed and “not good enough” we are, He sacrificed His son for us. In that moment, I understood that God the Father’s love is unconditional and everlasting. And I realized that I could have that special closeness with God the Father that I did not have with my natural father. Do you have, or did you have, a troubled relationship with your earthly father? Then you, too, might have trouble accepting the idea of God’s eternal love. I’d like to suggest that on this Father’s Day, you do what you can to repair and re-build that relationship. If your father has passed on, maybe you can work on accepting that the relationship was flawed and human, and not let it keep you from closeness with God. Today I’m blessed to have my first-born daughter Monica close to me. We often ride our horses together, and this is very special, because when she was growing up I was trav- eling all over the world. I missed so much in her early life, and feel so fortunate to have time now with this precious young woman. I can’t reclaim the years, but I can try every day to let her know I love her not for what she does or doesn’t do, but just because she is. God the Father loves us that way: just because we are, with all our shortcomings. That’s because the overwhelming weight of evidence shows that too many men are failing the good health test 52 weeks a year. It begins with such basics as seeing a doctor on a regular basis. According to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report, women are 33% more likely than men to visit a doctor. The negative health news for men doesn’t end there. The Men’s Health Network (MHN) states that men die at significantly higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death, including: • Heart disease • Cancer • Stroke • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease • Accidents • Pneumonia and influenza • Diabetes • Suicide • Kidney disease • Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis Men also die younger than women by an average of over five years. Why is that? According to Jean Bonhomme, M.D., an MHN board member, “Any person who doesn’t regularly screen for major health problems is at greater risk. For example, if you don’t get your cholesterol or blood pressure checked when these levels are starting to rise in your 20s or 30s, what do you think is going to happen when you’re 50?” Bonhomme also places part of the blame on a society which expects boys to be tough and ignore pain. However, when those boys become men, that little pain can get worse or signal an even more serious issue. The five top preventable and treatable causes of death 1. Heart disease Although heart disease is the leading killer of both men and women, almost twice as many men eventually die from it. According to the CDC, one in four men has some form of heart disease. Men often tend to develop heart disease at an earlier age than women. So, making the right lifestyle choices (eating healthier and exercising more) can help men reduce heart disease risk. 2. Stroke Stroke is the third leading killer in the country after heart disease and all forms of cancer. The incidence rate of stroke is 1.25 times greater in men than in women. One of the most important risk factors for stroke is high blood pressure and managing it is a crucial stroke prevention factor. Once again, the same lifestyle choices that reduce the risk of heart disease can also lower stroke risk. 3. Suicide and depression The Men’s Health Network reports that men are four times more likely to commit suicide than women. They are often less likely to show depres- sion and recognize they’re in trouble. To help men with depression and to reduce suicide risk, doctors, loved ones and men themselves need to deal honestly and openly with depression and suicidal impulses. 4. Lung cancer Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer for both men and women, claiming more lives than prostate, colon and breast cancer combined. Tobacco products are responsible for 90% of lung cancer cases. So, if you’re a smoker, stop now and your chances of getting lung cancer begin to diminish. 5. Prostate cancer Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men. The good news is that prostate cancer is treatable if found in early stages. The American Cancer Society suggests that healthy men have a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam each year after age 50. Men who are at high risk, such as African-Americans, or those with a family history of prostate cancer, should begin testing earlier. If more men speak up about their health concerns and take better care of themselves, there will no longer be a “silent crisis.” Both men and their loved ones will then be able to enjoy all the benefits of a longer, healthier life.
