2. Who is Oliver Cromwell?
He was an English military and political leader
best known for his involvement in making
England into a republic of Commonwealth.
Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and
Ireland.
Commander of the New Model Army who
defeated the royalists in the English Civil War.
Cromwell was born into a wealthy influential
family.
Educated at Huntingdon Grammar School at
Cambridge University and became a minor
East Anglican landowner.
His uncles inheritance boosted his finances and
underwent Puritanism a core principle of his
life.
Cromwell was elected Member of Parliament
and later entered the English Civil War.

History
The Battle of Marston Moor was fought on
July 2, 1644, during the First English Civil War
in which the success of Cromwell’s cavalry
broke the ranks of the Royalists by attacking
from the rear allowing a tremendous
Parliamentarian victory.
Cromwell's instinct to lead and train his men
strengthened his authority and contributed to
the success and discipline of his cavalry.
After the conquer of Catholics in Ireland,
Cromwell is still hated by the Irish for his
efforts to pursue his duty to the Parliament.
1653-1658 Cromwell was sworn in as Lord
Protector of the Commonwealth
His objectives as Lord Protector included,
“Healing and settling the nation” after the
chaos of the civil wars and establishing a
stable form of new government.
His second objective was “spiritual and moral
reform”. To restore liberty of conscience and
promote both outward and innate devoutness
throughout England.
