The Lay of the Last Minstrel
(excerpt)
“Breathes there the man with soul so
dead…” By Sir Walter Scott
Breathes there the man with soul so dead
Who never to himself hath said,
This is my own, my native land!
Whose heart hath ne’er within him
burned,
As home his footsteps he hath turned
From wandering on a foreign strand!
If such there breathe, go, mark him well;
For him no minstrel raptures swell;
High though his titles, proud his name,
Boundless his wealth as wish can claim
Despite those titles, power, and pelf,
The wretch, concentered all in self,
Living, shall forfeit fair renown,
And, doubly dying, shall go down
To the vile dust from whence he sprung,
Unwept, unhonored , and unsung.
" Na man mek buk, nor tu buk mek
man." - Siaka Probyn Stevens

The Krios are an ethnic group who are descendants of freed African-American,
Maroons from Trelawny Town in Jamaica, Nova Scotians from Canada, Freed
slaves from Great Britain and other liberated African slaves-the recaptives.
They settled in the western area of Sierra Leone in Freetown as a land for freed
slaves between 1787 and 1885 by the British. The Krios and the Americo-
Liberians in Liberia are the only recognized ethnic groups of African-Americans,
Liberated Africans and people of West Indian descent in West Africa. Krios,
Americo-Liberians and Sherbro culture primarily embraces western culture.
The Krio language is a mixture of English and other indigenous West African
languages and is the most widely spoken language in Sierra Leone. About 85%
of Krios are Christians and 15% are Muslims. The Krio Muslims are widely
known as Oku who are liberated African Muslims mostly Yoruba from Nigeria
who settled in Freetown in the mid-19th Century. The vast majority of Krios have
English names with Yoruba middle names whilst the Krio Muslims have Islamic
first names. Krios ceremonies consist of the Awujoh feast for newlyweds, and
Awujoh for the dead on the fortieth day which is intended to win the protection
of ancestral spirits. For newborns the ceremony is called “pull na doe”. When
someone dies at the wake people clap loudly to make sure the corpse is not
merely sleeping but is really dead, and pictures in the house are turned towards
the wall. The feast on the fortieth day marks the spirit’s last day on earth.
Portions of the meal (Awujoh) are placed into a hole for the dead.
Krio communities can be found all along the West Coast of Africa. In Nigeria
they are called Saros, In the Gambia they are Aku. Fernando Po, Cameroon
Ghana, Senegal, Liberia and Equatorial Guinea all have large Krio population.
Krios love Fufu made from cassava and eaten with Palaver sauce e.g. bitter
leaves, crain crain and other leaf vegetables known as Plassas, with tripe, beef,
fish and pigs feet known as hog foot and on Sunday’s they love their Sunday fry
soup and Jollof rice is reserved for special occasions.
