A study of 60 college freshmen randomly assigns them into two groups. 40 of the students
receive a study skills class, and the remainder does not. At the end of the semester, the
researchers compare the students performance on their final exams. They are curious if the
average scores of the study skills class is different than the other class. The null hypothesis is H 0
: 1 = 2 where 1 is the mean score for all students who get the study skills class and 2 is the mean
score of all students without the study skills class. What is the alternative hypothesis? H a : 1
They find a t-value of 2.33 . What is the degrees of freedom for this test? What is the p -value for
this test? At = .05 , what decision do they make? Can we conclude that the study skills class
leads to different scores?
