Speaking at

The last thing most of us need is something to help us spend money
faster. We need something to help us spend money better. 7
8. Social and news aggregator apps
These smartphone and tablet apps
are a great way to learn about new
technology while experiencing new
ways to rapidly navigate content.

9. Being an unabashed user
The best way to understand new mobile
technology is to experience it firsthand.
Buy an inexpensive Android tablet to try
out apps (Nook Tablet, Amazon Kindle
Fire, Archos).
Look for apps that feed one or more of
your personal passions.
Try Twitter or Facebook while on the go.
Learn about the downsides.
Voice your opinions to developers and
manufacturers.

I’m in my 8 th year at AARP. Have held many operational roles. Now I get to do new, special projects like mobile apps.
iPhone flagship app download about 100,000 times. 10s of thousands active users. Digital facsimile of pubs were a convenience to a small group of members who travel with devices. Actively working on placing the pubs on Apple, Amazon and B&N digital newsstands. The digital magazines will be taken to another level later this year as interactive editions like National Geographic, Smithsonian, Fast Company. The AARP.org mobile web site is based on the idea that the web site should lay out properly on any mobile web browser. We are seeing 2MM page views per month at AARP.org with a double digit growth rate. iPhone an iPad are used by 2/3 of the visitors. Android 1/3, with Amazon Kindle Fire coming out of nowhere to be the most popular Android device. iPhone app will be revamped to integrate with look and functionality of the iPad app. More than ½ of U.S. uses smartphones.
Abides by OneAARP strategy. Purpose built for iPads. Another leap into post-PC. Games and hot deals coming soon. Many possibilities for in-app commerce. Chose the iPad for flagship development because it is the runaway market leader at over 60MM devices sold globally. Tablet adoption may cross 50% in U.S. by 2015.

Chinatown Coffee, Washington, D.C. http://chinatowncoffee.com/ Square https://squareup.com/ Most known for shared CEO with Twitter. Original Square product is a credit card swiper for mobile devices with easy, fixed % payment processing fee. Have expanded to using iPads as cash registers, and now running “tabs” on Pay With Square. Pictured here is my view of the new Pay With Square app while walking through the Chinatown area of Washington, D.C. Intuit and PayPal also offering card readers with payment processing.
I was handed a cup of coffee by just saying my name! Note iPad “cash register” on a special plastic stand with Square card reader module attached. The cashier said my Square profile photo came right up on screen because my phone automaticlly transmitted my proximity.

Mary asked that we speak about how we learn about new technology or get into the business. One powerful tool is news reader apps for phones and tablets. All come with a selection of subscriptions to popular news feeds. All will connect with any social feeds like Twitter, Facebook to pull those in. All can log into Google Reader. Most of the apps purport some “secret sauce” at the core to surface more relevant content over time. All present news items as tiles that are formatted in grids, scrolling strips, flash cards or even look like a professionally designed magazine. People in the business call tiles the “squarification” of apps. Many are available for tablets and smartphones. Flipboard most celebrated. Similar web-based services like this are Paper.li and Scoop.it.
