Geography 300

What existed on the past?
Grade Level: 3rd grade
Subject: Science and Geography
Objective: The objective of this lesson plan is that students understand how the
world and the things change throughout the years and that for some stuff like
animals we can only see their fossils when they become extinct from this world.
Materials:
Notebook
Pencil
Map of the museum
Lunch bag
Standards:
Life Science:
(3) Adaptations in physical structure or behavior may improve an organism’s
chance for survival. As a basis for understanding this concept:
(d) Student knows when the environment changes, some plants and animals
survive and reproduce; others die or move to new locations.
(e) Student knows that some kinds of organism that once live on Earth have
completely disappeared and that some of those resembled others that are alive
today.
Geography:
Physical Systems:
2. (7) The physical processes that shape the patterns of Earth’s surface.
The use of Geography:
(17) How to apply Geography to interpret the past.
Fieldtrip Activity: On the fieldtrip students are required to take their notebook
and write down notes of everything they see and the information it contains
because when they get back to class they are going to answer some questions
about the animals that where there and how long their fossils have exist. Other
questions are going to be about the tribes and other people that used to live
there. By the end of this fieldtrip students are going to have a better
understanding of what animals, people and other different things used to exist in
this world before us. They will also see that throughout the years everything has
change and only the fossils of those things exist now.
Follow up Activity:
Foe the next day of class the students are going to talk about what they learned
and look throughout their tour in the museum. Then the students are going to
take out their notes and in small groups they are going to answer some questions
about the different things they saw, like the animals and their fossil or the
different tribes and their things. For homework each student is going to create
their own map. It could be the entire museum or just how to get to their favorite
section of the museum and at the bottom of the map they are going to write a
short paragraph of why this section was their favorite one.
Student Evaluation:
The students are going to be graded in their notebook to see if they were looking
and taking notes of the different things they saw in the museum. On their effort,
and neatness on making their map, and writing their short paragraph. And on
their questions because I will be able to see if the students completed them all
and understood some of the things they saw on the museum.
3. 3rd Grade - Search the Museum!
Class assignment
1) When the mammoths and sloths became extinct, what carnivores also became extinct?
2) Find the list of fossils in the Snap Shots in Time gallery.
What carnivores were found in the fossil record but are not extinct?
3) What do you think their prey animals were then? and now?
4) We have fossils for more than 60% of this animal. It is named “little” even though it is not.
What animal is it?
How "little" was it?
5) What two groups of Native Americans lived in this area before European pioneers arrived?
6) When did the Spanish make contact with the native people of this area?
7) Find three everyday tools of the native people.
8) How many different kinds of fossil animals can you find? Write the animals' names here.
