Coastal erosion bays and headlands
1. Features of Coastal Erosion
Bays and Headlands
Definition:
A Bay is a curved opening onto the sea- soft rock
A Headland is a raised area of hard rock that juts out into the
sea
2. Formation
1. When there are bands of hard and soft rock at the coast,
they will erode at different rates
2. The Hard rock will erode slowly (e.g. limestone) and the
soft rock faster (e.g. clay)
3. The soft rock will erode inwards to form a bay
4. The hard rock will then jut out into the sea to form a
headland
5. The headland may then provide shelter for the bay and
a beach may form
