5. Brief Description of Ilhabela Island
- 347,515 km² (IBGE, 2010).
- 85% of its area preserved by the Ilhabela State Park;
- One of the largest reserves of Atlantic Forest of the planet;
- 32.197 inhabitants (IBGE 2015);
- 42 beaches of different styles;
- 17 Traditional Caiçara Communities;

6. Brief description of Ilhabela Economy
- According to IBGE the main economic activity of Ilhabela is
the services sector which includes the hospitality and tourism
industry;
- On the other hand the main economic activity at the
tradicional caiçara communities is the artisan fishing;

8. Brief History of Ilhabela
- In the seventeenth century started the sugar-cane cycle in
Ilhabela and differently from most of the rest of the country, this
period was mainly based on the production of “cachaça” –
sugar-cane brandy, and not of sugar;
- There were some 30 distilleries, and by the end of the
nineteenth century, the town had almost 60 thousand
inhabitants.
- With the end of the cycle and of the abolition of slavery the
exodus was so enormous that in 1940 Ilhabela had little more
than 4 thousand inhabitants.

9. State Park of Ilhabela
- Ilhabela State Park was established in 1977 and is one of the last untouched refuges of the Tropical Atlantic
Rainforest with a preserved area of almost 275 km². In it are found trees hundreds of year’s old, rich flora and
thousands of rare species in diversified fauna. So much richness made it a Natural Patrimony and Reserve of the
Biosphere, a title recognized by UNESCO.
10. Tourism and Ilhabela
- With the advent of tourism, in 1960, Ilhabela started growing
once again.
- Nowadays, with its touristic destiny consolidated, Ilhabela is
recognized for holding important sporting events, like the
“Rolex Ilhabela Sailing Week”, the largest sailing competition of
all of Southern America; and the X-Terra, a world-wide phase of
adventure racing.
- To complete the it offers the hospitality and charm of its varied
hotel network. With its high quality gastronomy, lively and
musical night life, tropical climate and paradisiacal restful natural
refuges.

26. Information and Communication Technologies for the
promotion of local enterprises from the Traditional
Caiçaras Communities of Ilhabela (SP)

- Aims to analyse how the traditional communication channels and the Information and Communication
Technologies (ICTs) can contribute for the promotion of the community-based tourism in the Traditional
Caiçaras Communities from Bonete and Castelhanos beaches;
- The results highlight the increasing of tourism caiçaras enterprises in both communities however, regarding to
the use of the ICTs for the marketing and promotion, Bonete Community stands out by the fact it has access to
the Internet and it shows that this is fundamental for contacting tourists and to use Facebook, WhatsApp and e-
mail, empowering the community.
