Work on the following as an added exercise. Hope you enjoy doing it.
The Savior of the Blind
(Find out who is called “Savior of the Blind.” Why is he called by that name?)
Once a boy name Louis shouted in pain. He father came running. He saw
blood oozing from his eyes. The three-year old boy had tried to use an awl to make a
hole in a piece of leather while his father was busy at work. The awl instead hit his eye.
The boy was taken to a physician in Paris. He said that the case was hopeless for the
boy’s eye was already been infected. Since then the boy had been blind.
One day some years after the unfortune incident, Louis told his father that we
would like to read.
His Father told him about a school for the blind in Paris. He told his parents he
would like to go and he could manage being alone.
In the early 1800s, teaching the blind to read was difficult and tedious. Pupils
ran their fingers along twigs shaped into the letters on the alphabet. Learnings ended
because of the unavailability of books made of twigs.
So Luis left his hometown and enrolled in a school for the blind in Paris.
In the early 1800s, teaching the blind to read was difficult and tedious. Pupils
ran their fingers along twigs shaped into the letters of the alphabet. Learnings ended
because of the unavailability of books made of twigs.
Other methods were devised like embossing letters of the alphabet on cloth so
they could be felt with the fingers. There were very few of such embossed books for
they were expensive and very heavy because of the big sizes of the letters.
Louis, with his strong desire to read, kept on thinking how the blind will be
freed from their dark prison. The only way for him to do this is though books.
One day, already a teacher, heard about a system of “Night Writing” invented
by a French army officer. It consisted of a series of dots punched into thick paper.
Louis thought that it was it. That would be the tool that will allow the blind to
read books.
GRADE IV
15
Day in and day out, Louis punched and punched up to the wee hours of the
nigh until he succeeded.
Louis Braille had come up with a code system of reading and writing for the
blind. The Braille System that had freed them from darkness and had opened windows
to the world though they could not see.

Pupils ran their fingers along twigs shaped into the letters on the alphabet. Learnings ended because of the unavailability of books made of twigs. So Luis left his hometown and enrolled in a school for the blind in Paris. In the early 1800s, teaching the blind to read was difficult and tedious. Pupils ran their fingers along twigs shaped into the letters of the alphabet. Learnings ended because of the unavailability of books made of twigs. Other methods were devised like embossing letters of the alphabet on cloth so they could be felt with the fingers. There were very few of such embossed books for they were expensive and very heavy because of the big sizes of the letters. Louis, with his strong desire to read, kept on thinking how the blind will be freed from their dark prison. The only way for him to do this is though books. One day, already a teacher, heard about a system of “Night Writing” invented by a French army officer. It consisted of a series of dots punched into thick paper. Louis thought that it was it. That would be the tool that will allow the blind to read books.
