and stakes
Once digitized, what must we do with the original carriers? Can we discard
them? Under what conditions? How long must we keep them? …
Sorting, destroying, discarding, eliminating… are words which still frighten
A more and more shared issue.
Once analog media is digitized, archive departments must face a growing
pressure urging them to discard their analog or digital original media
essentially for economical reasons.
The skepticism about digital for long term preservation, its quality, reliability
is progressively disappearing and is more and more admitted as a solution.
Recently , in some countries legislation starts mentioning “the possibility to
destroy originals provided a true and faithful transfer to digital”

4. The
sorting
and
discarding
function
Selecting media for long term preservation (and therefore
discarding part of them) is a fully-fledged activity and
responsibility of Archives. It is an act of good management!
When managing audiovisual archives, selecting materials occurs
at different times of the whole archiving process: during
collecting, when storing, when digitizing and of course when
discarding.
However, the discarding of audiovisual media is a non-reversible
action which supposes to take some precautions and to respect
prerequisites and guidelines
So it is important to build a consistent, effective and clear policy.

5. Why
selecting
for
discarding?
The definitive obsolescence of the playback means
To save space and to optimize the storage facilities
To reduce preservation costs of the physical items
The level of degradation of the media
The potential risk of contamination of healthy collections
by degraded media
The potential health risk due to degraded media (Vinegar
syndrome for instance)
