3. Aqualia treats annually 500 000 000 m3 of urban wastewater
Electric consumption associated: 0,5 kWhel /m3 = 250 M kWh = 25 M €
The energy content of urban WW is typically ~2 kWhth/m3
Situation in Spain:
WWTPs >1 % national energy consumption
High sludge management costs 8-20 €/Ton
Difficulties to meet regulation 91/271/CEE: N & P
Need of water reuse RD 1620/2007
(specially in stressed areas)

AND WATER RECOVERY) PROJECT
31. RESULTS
From an environmental, economic and social point of view,
AnMBR for urban wastewater treatment is a promising
technology:
Suitable COD removal
Methane production: recovering methane from effluent is a
crucial step for the favorable energy balance of the process
High methane concentration: possibility for biomethane
production, to be used as automotive biofuel
Low biosolids production can be achieved (up to 4 times lower
than aerobic processes )
High quality treated water is obtained, which is rich-nutrient
water Identify value of nutrient rich irrigation reuse
Low footprint
Waste sludge
production of 76 g
VSS/kg COD
High COD removal
efficiency 92 ± 4 %
Methane yield of
105.7 LCH4/kg COD
70% CH4 in biogas
