Video Playing Before Session:Introduction: Who I am?President of AcademyLion, Inc. Edtech Enthusiast, DEN LC, BrainPOP Educator, Co-Host of #Eduwin Podcast Show, Technology Conference Speaker, and Founder of Edcamp Leon, Oversee Instructional Technology for LCSWhat this session is not about? Just to be clear, I am not going to get into discussions of how social media is awesome and show talk to you about how your students need to be on Facebook and Twitter. Blocked Websites : Blocked Social MediaHaving Said that â Then what is this presentation really about? Well its about understanding the concepts of Social Media. Why itâs so popular and how can we use the power of social media concepts in education? How can we infuse the power of social media to increase student engagement, but also make our lessons and instruction more meaningful in relation to the 21st Century.
Social science is the study of society and human behaviors. Its about people and how they interact. How they communicate. What messages are they sharing and what the purposePersonal Note: make sure that I lead into marketing.
Marketing â What is the purpose of marketing?Correlation between Marketing Experts and Educators.Companies spend billions and billions of dollars to learn everything that they could possibly learn about you so they influence you to buy there product.
What are you trying to accomplish?Student CollaborationLearning the Content21st Century SkillsThe topics that we are going to be discussing today are nothing new. This is no shock. These are the same things that we were talking about 5 years ago, 10 years ago, 20 years ago. So what's different â the answer: How your message gets delivered. MUST READ:Lectures become conversationsBashful Students are Speaking upStudents stay engaged beyond the lecture/class timeStudents think about the lesson when they are not in the classroom - Thanks to a social media postReview sessions happen anywhereLess Classroom disruptions
Believe it or not Social Media is no longer new nor exciting. Itâs an EXPECTATION. Examples:ESPN â Every Show, Sports Analyst, and Athlete has a twitter account or Hashtag associated. Popular TV Sitcoms â will display a hashtag for you to tweet that you are watching the show. Cosmetic Products have a twitter account. What does every business want you to do? Like them on Facebook:Social Media is an expectation. Itâs a part of our society so I ask what are we doing as educators to influence, inspire, educate, and engage our students with Social Media.
Impact of Twitter on Sports and TV. What does it mean to be trending.
Using Hashtags for Inspirational Moments. Celebrate the positive with Hashtags in your classroom.
What is Your Eduwin? What is an Eduwin? How do you share an Eduwin?
Hashtags Gone Wrong:Hashtags are great and there are so many ideas that you can use to infuse them into your teachings. However, you donât want to be that person that over uses them. Another idea: setting up a hashtag for your classroom.
Set up a paper.li for your classroom hashtag if you are using twitter with your students.Another idea: setting up a hashtag for your classroom.
The Power of Images: And more Importantly Manipulating Those Images Using images in the classroom are no secret. We all teach using great images but why? Because they capture us. Because we are trained to view the images before we read any of the text.Social Media is no different. When you use Facebook â sometimes we read each post, but the majority of times, do we not skim through and see the images first, and then we view the comments? The best posts/funniest/most interesting usually have an image associated with it.
So how do I teach with this image?Same concepts that we use with images can be implemented with Social Media. Why would we do this you ask? Because we need to meet students where they are when it comes to fads, and engagement.
The Good â Its Popular, Kids Love Snap ChatThe Bad -The Ugly â 150 Million photos a day are taken on snap chat, while Instagram users take around 40 million photos a day.Â
Gary Davis â Pinterest is like crack for teachers. Why?Visual Stimulation?Visual Impact?Engagement?Sounds like we should be using it with our students?
Resources:Farcebook.us â Paid Service that allows you to create profiles or download free templates with content already on them.
This is really more about the concept of Facebook â and the information that you would put in there. This template may be a better fit for Elementary Teachers and maybe early middle school years.
Screenshots go a long way. Infusing Social Media into your instruction does not mean that
Interactive White Boards
TEMPLATES VS. ASSIGNMENTS
Science and Math donât have to always be serious. Like and ExplainDo you like it? Why or why not? Even if you donât like something you can still comment on it and give your rationale. So what exactly is that Like Button â well its feedback. Itâs feedback from the students letting you know that they are interested in that topic.
Students are to explain what is happening in 140 Characters? Explain the process, and more importantly tell me the answer âWaterâ.
Math and Competition Go together beautiful. Competition is nothing new in math. However presenting math in a different light could be very powerful. Present Math Problems using social media templates and concepts.

Your Pinterest Template does not need to be complex. I am going to be sharing some great resources but donât feel like you have to use these templates. Create your own, simplify them, add an icon and make it a day. Simplify Your Board: Donât feel like you have to have an exact copy or the most detailed version. Remember that its not about the technology, its about the instruction. Challenge students to create there own templates.
