Proposal
Producer(s): Fearghal McGlinchey Production Title: ‘Scars’ – James Bay music
video
Brief: To make a music video for a song of our choice.
Aim: To create a high quality music video to the song ‘Scars’ by James Bay.
Description of your intentions:
The intentions behind my video is to create a narrative that reflects the meaning of the
lyrics, to mostly show the emotion that the song gives off. As the song I have chosen is
quite meaningful lyrics wise I plan to create a video that has just one character to give off
a very lonely vibe as the song is about him losing his girlfriend and talking about what he
would do differently if he saw her again etc. The black box room will be used to film very
emotional footage, footage that will make the audience feel his pain too, I intend on using
this location as one of the main locations of the whole video due to it being completely
black, which is what will give off a very dull and upsetting vibe which is what I would
want. He will also be walking round London, my intentions of this location being used and
him just simply walking around is that he is trying to ‘clear his head’ and ‘finding himself’
as he feels very lost and alone at the moment. He will have a guitar in its case on his back
at almost all times in the London shots because this shows that music is the only thing
that is helping him get through the time he is having, the guitar is what is keeping him
sane and he feels like he has to take it everywhere with him when he leaves the house.
There will be shots in some parts of my house, but they will be very limited due to my
intentions being that he doesn’t want to stay at home by himself because it just makes
him remember of his ex-girlfriend and how she isn’t there with him. I will have random
establishing shots of places in London because this signifies himnot knowing where he’s
wanted or where he belongs, and he’s just simply trying to figure that out after the
trauma he has gone through. Whenever there will be shots of him singing the lyrics, these
will mostly all be close ups, this is the only way that the audience where be able to feel his
emotion, if they were mid/long shots, the emotion would not rub off and the lyrics of the
song would become pointless. The video will constantly show his thoughts, his feelings
and how he means every word he sings, this is essential in making a great music video
that people can really connect with.
Target Audience:
My target audience for my music video would be anyone who is focused in the
indie/indie-rock/indie-folk genre. This is exactly the type of song they would be interested
2. in and it would be interesting to see if they feel the same way about my video and my
interpretation compared to other music videos in that genre. Also, my music video would
attract anyone who has gone through a heartbreak as they would be able to relate to the
lyrics and everything that the actor would be doing in the music video due to them
potentially doing the same when they were going through it. Moreover, it would be
anyone who listened to and was a fan of James Bay prior to me making this music video.
Similar Products:
Many of James Bay’s songs have the same kind of meaning and style as ‘Scars’ as they are
all of course in the same genre and they all tend of be meaningful. Songs like ‘Let it go’
are examples of similar products, the music video for that song also has a very dark and
dull setting. Similar artists to James Bay would be people such as Hozier and Ben Howard,
they both write songs that are lyrically meaningful which is the same style as James Bay.
The type of music videos I take inspiration from is actually work from the ‘Let it go’ video,
it gives off a very lonely vibe which is exactly what I want for my video, I want the
audience to be able to feel his emotion and that is what happens in the ‘Let it go’ video.
