Types of sentences

2. “A group of words , usually containing a
verb, which expresses a thought in the
form of a statement ,question,
instruction or exclamination and starts
with a capital letter when written”
3. There are four types of sentences:
1. Simple sentence
2. Compound sentence
3. Complex sentence
4. Complex compound sentence
4. “A simple sentence is composed of a
single Independent clause ,contains a Subject
and a Verb, and. it expresses a complete
thought.”
EXAMPLE :
We had a great visit to Paris and Berlin
last September.
5. “ A compound sentence is composed of two
or more Independent clauses which may be
connected by a Coordinating conjunction
(and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet) and are always
preceded by a comma .”
EXAMPLE:
Ali played foot ball, so Sarah
went shopping.
6. “ A complex sentence is composed of one
Independent clause (the main clause) and one
or more Dependent clauses.”
EXAMPLE
While we were walking through the Louvre, we suddenly
met our neighbor John and his family.
[dependent adverb clause starting with while;
independent clause starting with we]
7. A complex sentence always has a
subordinator such as ( because, since, after,
although or when etc) or relative pronoun
( that ,who or which etc).
Sentence containing Adjective clauses are also
complex sentences.
EXAMPLE:
The town where I grew up is in Pakistan.
8. “A compound-complex sentence combines a
Compound sentence with a Complex
sentence. It contains two or more
Independent clauses and one or more
Dependent clauses.”
9. EXAMPLE:
While we were walking through the Louvre,
we suddenly met our neighbor John with his
family, and all of us went out for lunch .
[Dependent clause starting with
while; independent clause starting
with we; independent clause starting
with all of us]
