2. What are the MDGs?
 In September 2000, at the Millennium
Summit, 193 nations agreed on a set of eight
development goals aimed at improving overall
human well-being.
 These goals are set out in a document called the
United Nations Millennium Declaration.
 All agreed to achieve these goals by 2015.

3. The eight MDGs
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other disease
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development

5. Milestones achieved (2012)
 Extreme poverty is falling in every region
 The poverty reduction target was met
 The target of halving the proportion of people without access to
improved sources of water and access to safe drinking water was met.
 Improvements in the lives of 200 million slum dwellers exceeded the
slum target
 The target of achieving parity in primary education between girls and
boys was met.
 Significant progress towards universal primary education has been
achieved.
 The number of under-five deaths worldwide fell significantly.
 Access to treatment for people living with HIV increased in all regions.
 The target of halting and beginning to reverse the spread of
tuberculosis is on track.
 Global malaria deaths have declined.
