An Introduction to Cellular Respiration:
                                         C6    H12O6 + O2 --> CO2 + H2O + ATP

Definitio n: The 3-step process by which glucose molecules are broken down to release usable energy

Occurs in ALL cells, both eukaryotes and prokaryotes

Prokaryotes do entire process within their cytoplasm because they do not have mitochondria
Step 1 of 3: Glycolysis ("Glucose-breaking")

C6H12O6 enters the
cytoplasm 2 NADH + H are created. These skip step 2
and move directly to step 3.

                              Glycolysis
2 pyruvic acid are created. These
                                                                  move to step 2.

                               4 ATP are created. . .

. . .2 of those ATP are released

. . .and 2 of those ATP are reused immediately
Steps 2 and 3: The Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport Chain
            2 ATP
                               CO2
                                                       Oxygen

   oxygen water

                                                                          32 ATP
               Step 2: Krebs Cycle

                                            Step 3:
                                            Electron Transport Chain
pyruvic acid from glycolysis

                                     NADH + H and
                                        FADH2

NADH + H from glycolysis made for ETC
For your notes:

                                                                                                 Oxygen
                                                     NADH + H
          Cytoplasm

C6H12O6 Pyruvic Acid

                                             Kreb's Cycle (Citric Electron
                                                Acid Cycle) FADH2 Transport Chain
              Glycolysis
                                                                    NADH + H

                                                                    Mitochondria

                                      Oxygen 32 ATP
           4 ATP (2 usable)
                                                                                   Water
                                             2 ATP CO2
Fermentation: Cellular Respiration in the Absence of Oxygen

This is used by prokaryotes for ALL of their ATP formation
This is used in eukaryotes as a quick boost to ATP production

We also call this ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION

There are two types of fermentation (anaerobic respiration) -- Lactic Acid
                  Fermentation and Alcoholic Fermenation
Alcoholic Fermentation Occurs in Organisms Like Yeast Anaerobically

                                              2 ATP

Notice that again, oxygen is NOT used and only 2 ATP are produced
Allows glycolysis to continue
making 2 ATP when oxygen is not
available in the correct quantities
