Pop music is derived from the term popular music. This
genre originated from the 1950’s in the form of rock and
roll. Throughout the years Pop music continued to
develop and grow by gaining influences from other
genres and using certain elements such as jazz, country,
dance, gospel, and classical. For example Michael
Jackson, Madonna, and Whitney Houston were Pop artists
from the 90s. Their music in comparison to the 1950’s was
very developed in terms of production and had a lot of
different elements e.g. Michael Jackson had music which
you could dance too. The genre pop is constantly
changing to match current trends that are popular.
However there are certain conventions that still continue
to represent the genre pop.
HISTORY OF POP
3.
Artists within the Pop genre are represented in different
ways depending on their age and gender. For example
female artists above a certain age will be represented as
sex symbols i.e Rihanna, Beyonce. They will be
represented this way due to the way they dress/look, the
content of their songs, the way they dance etc. However
there are exceptions in this genre where the artists are
represented as role models, due to charity work they do
or messages they may spread. An example of an artist
who is also represented as a role model is Demi Lovato, as
she has informed the public of her personal struggles and
created awareness of these issues that may affect others
i.e self-harm, mental health disorders (bipolar). Another
way that artist may be represented as are great
musicians. This is when any other factor doesn’t apart
from the music matters i.e. the image.
REPRESENTATION
4.
The main ideologies represented in recent
music videos is anything current and
popular. Pop music videos have the artist
wearing modern clothing making it relatable
to the audience. This is because Pop music
represents popular culture i.e. fashion, music
trends. However sometimes the costumes
are also flashy and on trend. Thus making
the artist seem superior to others. Also
female artists are usually represented in a
sexual way to appeal to the male audience
IDEOLOGIES

Some examples of contemporary pop artists
are Beyonce, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Justin
Timberlake, and Lady Gaga.
An example of a conventional music video is
Lady Gaga ‘Poker Face’.

This video is conventional to the Pop genre
because the artist is decked out in the latest
trends i.e. a body suit and studded clothing.
EXAMPLES
6.
During the production of my video I should take into
consideration different typical Pop conventions that I
should include. Otherwise it wouldn’t be obvious what the
genre of my music video is. A convention that I will use
throughout my video is items that are in trend and
popular at the moment. For example as it is summer my
artist will be wearing summery clothes that are in trend. I
should also take it into consideration the representation
of my artist e.g. her costume, body language and
movement in the video will represent her as an artist and
would let the audience know what to expect from her.
For example Lady Gaga acts eccentric and wears
extravagant costumes that match. This is how she has
represented herself and wants the audience to see her
as.
