We are moving from behaviorist to cognitivist to constuctionist to connectivist learning theories. Knowledge will reside in networks as much as in individuals and institutions. Social media is one tool to help navigate a connectivist networked model of learning

JH: Good morning, Felix and I would like to thank you all for attending our talk on Sustainability in Social Media..
We’d like to open with a short video clip ---
JH: Felix and I have planned for this talk to largely be a reflection of our experiences and practices with using social media --- Our main goal is to stimulate a conversation around this topic –
From the time most of began on our medical path – the way we learn and the way we network has changed dramatically. For some of us, the use of social media has been a complete game changer in our careers.
For others you might be here because you are curious, or skeptical of using social media. This talk is for everyone – and we hope you all participate in the dialogue.
In the next half hour - we will provide you with what we think are decent tools and strategies to stay active in social media, and a discussion of the importance to have a purpose in your online presence.
Yet, the crux of this topic is reflecting on our learning environment, and being deliberate about how we engage and utilize social media to meet our professional goals and mission.
JH: Like many of you – I was first introduced to social media, when I was coursed to joining Friendster – Myspace – and later Facebook to stay in touch my college friends –
For many years- I saw these networks and use of most online resources as a distraction – to studying my textbooks – and preparing for my exams – Not only did I not know what resources to trust, but I did not have the tools to properly navigate and curate.
It wasn’t until years later when I was in an education fellowship that I started to use twitter to connect with like-minded educators- II soon found that social media expanded my mentorship from a handful of people in my department, to numerous people all over the world.
I continue to use Facebook and Instagram for my personal life ---and Twitter for my professional and academic purposes.
However I think there is always some blend – because I’m on social media people from work are exposed to my personal life, and similarly my family can follow what I am interesting in professinally. I am constantly reconsidering the amount of privacy I want, and also mindful of what I share – and how time I am spedning on social media, and if my use of social media is inline my short and long term goals.
Felix. Talk about why I use Twitter (academics), LinkedIn (operations) ----
FA, This is a natural evolution on learning theories (HT to Martin Pusic)
First there was behaviorism (skinner rats), then there was cognitivism (How do we think)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behaviorism
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitivism_(psychology)
FA
Then came constructionism (eg PBL and zone of proximal development) and now we have connectivism (the community is the curriculum)
BTW can down load edcuational theory made practical free from ALiEM
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constructionism_(learning_theory)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connectivism
FA Has anybody hear about knowmads
I grew up in an analytic world, you deconstruct parts of a discipline into smaller parts to understand them and develop expertise in a narrow filed (academic ocd)
Knowmads live in a synthetic world, find the connections between disciplines and live in diverse communities of practice.
For the future, analytic work is going to be automated moving data into information into knowledge. Eg Watson making humans in this area less valued and probably obsolete
Synthetic work is going to move move information and knowledge into wisdom, that is a shared space, the best wisdom comes when that space is an inclusive and diverse one, knowmads catalyse this
JH specifics of knowmads
Any questions so far:
JH Tips for success
No FA
JH
FA Gotta ask the why….why are you doing this
My big goal is to facilitate a connectivist medical education culture….it is also to facilitate a synthetic model of learning….why, bc I think it will help the quadruple aim
Occasionally, I tweek what I consider barriers to this…..hierarchies, institutions, outdated cultures or social norms, but most of my posts are focused on going somewhere, rather than changing a status quo, does this make sense?
FA this is one I have pivoted on, at first I thought I had to be interesting to add value, I think I add value when I am curious, I ask questions
JH
JH.
FA. I suggest, having this be a drip rather than a bolus, a little time everyday, mine is in am when I get up, I read a little and reflect during the day, before dinner, I figure out if I am going to post. Exception is during conferences, I am active in backchannel, and use national conferences like IHI, AAMC, ACGME, ICRE, AMEE to add connectivist and knowmad framework to backchannel, is also where I tend to get most new followers
FA. For me, being on twitter is like taking a walk in the woods, I do not feel like I have to see every single tree, I am just taking a walk
JH
JH
FA. My goal to be in a social sphere is to catalyze systems thinking. The most connected we are, the more meaning there is, and the more value we bring, it is not a product, it is a discipline
Movement Model (Gannes)
FA. My purpose is to add value, catalyze connectivity, synthetic thinking, and systems thinking. It fuels my personal values which are beneficence, non malfeasance, autonomy, and social justice
JH---
FA Have you heard of doctors without borders? How about doctors without boundaries…..I try to stay in my swim lane, I talk about my intention and feelings not others (funny people want to be judged on their intentions but judge others on their behaviors)…..we are part of a fairly progressive health care organization (climate change, racism, LGBT etc…) I usually tweets links of our organizational positions but usually only tweet about meded, leadership, and organizational development
Twiiter mostly meded
Linked in mostly leadership
Facebook personal
FA I sometimes have a completion anxiety to tweet and need to hold back, make sure you spellcheck, make sure you have right @ person, make sure you have right link
JH
FA. I you are in the social sphere, I suggest to have a discipline of looking at your analytics (who is reading what, impact etc…) not looking at your analytics is like doing a residency without ever being assessed.
Take homes: have just 1-2 platforms
Idea of Knowmads –
This should be enjoyable
Figure out your discipline and hygiene
