WHAT DOES IESTL MEAN?
The International English Language Testing System or IELTS, is an
international standardized test of English language proficiency for
non native English Language Speakers. It is jointly managed by the
British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment
English and was established in 1989. IELTS is one of the major English-
language tests in the world.
IESTL FUNCTION
It is the test
for study
Thousands of the world’s most reputable universities
and colleges accept IELTS results as evidence of
English language proficiency.
It is the test for
professionals
Professional registration bodies in many fields including
accounting, engineering, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and
teaching bodies in many countries accept IELTS scores.
It is the test for
migration
Most governments prefer IELTS scores as proof of your language
skills than any other English language test as a requirement for
permanent residency. Most governments prefer IELTS scores as
proof of your language skills than any other English language test
as a requirement for permanent residency.
It’s the test
that’s fairer to
you
IELTS assesses you on your practical
communication abilities and provides with an
accurate assessment of the four skills being tested.
IELTS training is an internationally recognised system for testing
English language ability in four categories:
1. Listening (30 minutes)
You will have to listen to four recordings and then answer the questions asked. The recordings are of
native English speakers and the duration of the test is 30 minutes
Example:
Solution:
● Read the instructions properly
If in the listening test you are asked to answer no more than two words (no more than two
words), in the writing test, you must pay attention to the number of words required in each
task. If you don't meet the word threshold, you'll lose grades.
● Keep practicing
During practice, learn to time the actual test. Besides being able to estimate time, you can
also identify your weaknesses and strengths. If you have difficulty on the reading test, you
should devote more time to practicing the reading test
2. Reading (60 minutes)
The IELTS Reading test requires you to answer 40 questions and is designed to test you on an array of reading skills.
You would have to read for gist, main ideas, details, logical arguments, skimming, and figuring out the writers’ attitudes,
opinions and intentions
EXAMPLE:
Solution:
Identifying information
When you have to identify information, you will be given a number
of statements and asked: “Do the following statements agree with
the information in the text?”. When you answer the
questions, you write “True”, “False” or “Not given” in the answer
boxes.
It is important to understand the difference between “False” and “Not
given”. “False” means the passage states the opposite of the
statement in question. “Not given” means that the statement is
neither confirmed nor contradicted by the information in the
passage.
Identifying a writer's views or claims
In this question type, where you have to identify a writer’s view or
claim, you will be given a number of statements and asked: ‘Do the
following statements agree with the views/claims of the writer?’. You
will then select ‘Yes’, ‘No’ or ‘Not given’.
It is important to understand the difference between 'No' and 'Not
given'. 'No' means that the views or claims of the writer explicitly
disagree with the statement, i.e. the writer expresses the view or
makes a claim which is opposite to the one given in the question; 'Not
given' means that the view or claim is neither confirmed nor
contradicted.
Be careful when deciding on your answer that you are not influenced
by your own knowledge on the topic area.
This question type assesses your ability to recognise opinions or
ideas, and so it is often used with discursive or argumentative texts.
3. Writing (60 minutes)
The IELTS writing test requires you to complete two tasks and covers topics of
general interest based on the module you are taking.
EXAMPLE:
Solution:
In Task of the Academic Writing test, you are asked to write an essay in response to a point
of view, an argument, or a problem. Essays should be written in an academic, or semi-
formal style. Topics are about relevant issues and focus on a particular aspect of the topic.
For example, if the topic is about computers, the focus will be on a particular aspect rather
than writing about computers in general.
The task instructions give you information about the question telling you how to discuss the
topic in your essay. You may be asked to provide factual information, outline and present
solutions, justify an opinion or evaluate evidence and ideas. It is important that you
complete the task carefully using relevant ideas and examples to support your position.
Your ideas should be organised clearly, using paragraphs for each idea. You must write a
minimum of 250 words.
You are assessed on your ability to follow English essay-writing conventions to organise and
link information in a coherent way using language accurately and appropriately to express
your ideas and opinions.
4. Speaking (11-14 minutes)
The IELTS Speaking test
assesses your spoken
English skills. The test is
recorded and conducted in
three parts.
Solution:
Please note, to get the best score in IELTS Speaking, you must
show all your language skills. Speaking fluently, at a consistent
tempo without stuttering, confidently without correcting your
mistakes, and naturally using the right intonation, will reflect
that you deserve enough band scores or scores. More than
that, using rich vocabulary and idioms, arranging grammar,
using complex but effective sentence structures, is an absolute
must so that your band score can reach the highest score.
The Type of IESTL
There are two different types of IELTS test:
Academic IELTS is for
international students who wish
to study at a UK university or
join an institute of higher
education.
General IELTS classes focus
on English survival skills
and social and workplace
language, ideal for those
who are planning to
migrate to English-speaking
countries such as Australia,
Canada and New Zealand.

Listening (30 minutes) You will have to listen to four recordings and then answer the questions asked. The recordings are of native English speakers and the duration of the test is 30 minutes Example:
  • 5. Solution: ● Read the instructions properly If in the listening test you are asked to answer no more than two words (no more than two words), in the writing test, you must pay attention to the number of words required in each task. If you don't meet the word threshold, you'll lose grades. ● Keep practicing During practice, learn to time the actual test. Besides being able to estimate time, you can also identify your weaknesses and strengths. If you have difficulty on the reading test, you should devote more time to practicing the reading test
  • 6. 2. Reading (60 minutes) The IELTS Reading test requires you to answer 40 questions and is designed to test you on an array of reading skills. You would have to read for gist, main ideas, details, logical arguments, skimming, and figuring out the writers’ attitudes, opinions and intentions EXAMPLE:
  • 7. Solution: Identifying information When you have to identify information, you will be given a number of statements and asked: “Do the following statements agree with the information in the text?”. When you answer the questions, you write “True”, “False” or “Not given” in the answer boxes. It is important to understand the difference between “False” and “Not given”. “False” means the passage states the opposite of the statement in question. “Not given” means that the statement is neither confirmed nor contradicted by the information in the passage. Identifying a writer's views or claims In this question type, where you have to identify a writer’s view or claim, you will be given a number of statements and asked: ‘Do the following statements agree with the views/claims of the writer?’. You will then select ‘Yes’, ‘No’ or ‘Not given’. It is important to understand the difference between 'No' and 'Not given'. 'No' means that the views or claims of the writer explicitly disagree with the statement, i.e. the writer expresses the view or makes a claim which is opposite to the one given in the question; 'Not given' means that the view or claim is neither confirmed nor contradicted. Be careful when deciding on your answer that you are not influenced by your own knowledge on the topic area. This question type assesses your ability to recognise opinions or ideas, and so it is often used with discursive or argumentative texts.
  • 8. 3. Writing (60 minutes) The IELTS writing test requires you to complete two tasks and covers topics of general interest based on the module you are taking. EXAMPLE:
  • 9. Solution: In Task of the Academic Writing test, you are asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, an argument, or a problem. Essays should be written in an academic, or semi- formal style. Topics are about relevant issues and focus on a particular aspect of the topic. For example, if the topic is about computers, the focus will be on a particular aspect rather than writing about computers in general. The task instructions give you information about the question telling you how to discuss the topic in your essay. You may be asked to provide factual information, outline and present solutions, justify an opinion or evaluate evidence and ideas. It is important that you complete the task carefully using relevant ideas and examples to support your position. Your ideas should be organised clearly, using paragraphs for each idea. You must write a minimum of 250 words. You are assessed on your ability to follow English essay-writing conventions to organise and link information in a coherent way using language accurately and appropriately to express your ideas and opinions.
  • 10. 4. Speaking (11-14 minutes) The IELTS Speaking test assesses your spoken English skills. The test is recorded and conducted in three parts.
  • 11. Solution: Please note, to get the best score in IELTS Speaking, you must show all your language skills. Speaking fluently, at a consistent tempo without stuttering, confidently without correcting your mistakes, and naturally using the right intonation, will reflect that you deserve enough band scores or scores. More than that, using rich vocabulary and idioms, arranging grammar, using complex but effective sentence structures, is an absolute must so that your band score can reach the highest score.
  • 12. The Type of IESTL There are two different types of IELTS test: Academic IELTS is for international students who wish to study at a UK university or join an institute of higher education. General IELTS classes focus on English survival skills and social and workplace language, ideal for those who are planning to migrate to English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand. 01 02
