LOCATION
The locations of the films we researched were out on the streets and were hardly filmed in
buildings except from green street which the opening scene opened on a airport. Also Snatch
included like a dodgy business location where gambling took place and stolen goods such as
jewellery were passed around. In other film openings such as Football Factory and Lock Stock
and two smoking barrels the main locations used were back streets. We used lanes and
streets to film ours so that they fitted the conventions for our type of genre. Both of these
opening were filmed in daylight, even though the snapshot of them in the lane is darker
when they are running away, it is during the day that they are selling the goods in Lock Stock.

EDITING
In the film Snatch (A Guy Ritchie film) they use freeze frames to introduce the character, they
pause the clip on a picture that says a lot about someoneâs personality and titles come up to
show their name, or nickname which is another convention of our type of genre. As a group we
decided that we liked this idea of introducing the characters and saying a little bit of narrative
over the top so the audience felt as if they understood their personalities and what they were
like. Our character was a bit of a push around, which I think is portrayed well in this freeze
frame.

ACTING AND CHARACTERISTICS Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
In every film opening we looked up the main conventions
involved were witty humour and sneaky and the audience are
kept in the dark not knowing what theyâre up to. British realist
gangster films such as Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
include a cockney accent as well. If ours could be compared to
one of the films we researched id say ours is most like Lock
Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, I think this because we
followed most of their conventions such as the cockney accent
and the dodgy dealing at the start where you are unsure of
what theyâre up to. In Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
there is a chase scene from the police to show the audience
that theyâre sneaky and what they are doing isnât legal. We
didnât follow this convention and include a chase scene
because in the first two minutes we didnât want to reveal the
plot and so we decided to leave this out. The opening scene to
Football Factory includes a fight, this is a convention we also
chose not to include because we thought it would be difficult
to act out and it also wasnât necessary for our story line. I think
we followed the conventions to fit the genre that we were
studying and I think that from our final media product you can
tell what genre of films it is and can guess what is roughly going
to happen in the rest of the film. Because gangster films target
audience is for men, they are normally quite action based and
sneaky with rough men actors, so we challenged the
conventions by having a ladies man in there and someone
whoâs a bit dopey, just to make it a bit more personal and our
own.

COSTUMES AND PROPS
The clothes worn within this genre are very smart and include
the clothing that we found when doing our research. Below in
Snatch is Jason Statham (a well known gangster actor) who is
dressed very smartly. Their clothing is quite expensive and we
as an audience know that the only way they can afford their
clothes is by all the sneaky things that they get up to. However
within our films we couldnât use famous well known actors who
would fit the role such as Jason Statham but if we could pick
our actors, someone like him would be ideal for the role.
Within our own film we included leather jackets, ties, and the
shoes that would be worn within that genre. Our actors were
dressed up very smart so that our own media product would
meet the convention of real media products already out there
today.

6. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
TITLES
When researching titles used in the opening
scenes of gangster movies, we noticed that
bold lettering is used and the letters arenât
thin, they were normally quite chunky fonts.
However for example football factory, the
break ups within the letters is done like that
to make it look like a football. And all the
fonts differed depending on the titles and
what was included within their films. So we
decided to stick to the conventions of the
capital letters and thick chunky texts, and
also we noticed how they were normally
black with white writing, for example football
factory. We also used this convention to
create our final media product. However we
thought our font suited our genre of film and
the title of the film, we thought the text
looked quite patchy and shady like some
blanks needed filling in, which is kind of the
point of the movie too so we thought the
title was relevant and fitted the conventions
for a real media product.
