Expo Stories
Welcome to the incredible universe of the World Expos!
I went to the market of birds
And I bought birds
For you, my love
I went to the market of flowers
And I bought flowers
For you, my love
I went to the market of ironwork
And I bought chains
Heavy chains
For you my love
And then I went to the market of slaves
And I looked for you
But I did not find you there, my love
In the beginning there were the markets.
The Arabs called the market “souk.” The Persians “bazaar.” The
Spanish “mercado.” The French people “marche.” One French poet
named Jacques Prevert created a poem about marches.
And people saw, that the market
was good and created the fair.
Exposition
Apart From The Royal Guest
among the visitors were also:
Charles Darwin Charlotte Bronte
Lewis Carroll
George Eliot
The people who flocked there were looking
for some sort of magic to occur in their lives,
and the first Expo offered many blessings.
Some found partners:
Some found science.
Some
found
technology
All discovered the achievements
of the world!
Human trading
options have evolved
To fair
To World’s Fair
From every subject in our daily round can be organized a
specialized exhibition – electronics, furniture, computers.
Expos are mostly about sharing ideas and
welcoming the future of technology
The 19 Century must
have been the most
exciting period for
living from the tech
point of view.
In the beginning of the century, weeks had to pass, so that a message can
cross the ocean. By the end thanks to electromagnetism and the
telegraph, a man could communicate in a blink, no matter the distance.
Telephone engineer hanging
on a wire
Lightbulbs started
burning immediately
thanks to the
electricity brought in
your own house.
Railways crossed the land, which meant you
didn’t have to ride in stinky horse carriages.
Ships did no longer not depend on winds
to arrive at the destination.
This is the century in which the science takes control
and it is already a reputable occupation.
In 1825
the first typewriter
was produced.
It was presented
at the Centennial
International
Exhibition
of 1876,
the first official
World Expo
in Philadelphia, USA
In 1868 the first traffic lights was noticed in London in front of the
parliament buildings: those were gas lanterns installed on posts and
turned on by policemen They were placed there to stop the traffic,
when the deputies crossed the road. In March 2013, Expo Traffic, a
leading exhibition for traffic safety products, took place in Moscow.
If you are tired by all these giddy advertisements about jeans
– blame Oscar Levi Straus, who in 1850 cut the first pair from
a tent. Nowadays we have China Expo for Apparel and Clothing.
The Ferris Wheel
1893 Chicago World’s Fair
For the first time
presented the Ferris Wheel
“…the Ferris wheel
carried its passengers high
and brought them low
and raised them high
and brought them low again,
as if it were not
merely a carnival ride
but also a metaphor
for the basic pattern
of human experience.”
In the 20th century
the electronics was born.
That led to the phenomenal development of
the radio and the TV.
Cars also imposed
The cinematograph was developed.
A German company
received patent
for a gramophone
which played
with chocolate records.
In 1909
the toaster
appeared.
Multiple new technologies
have developed in the past
40 years, which changed
our daily round more than
ever.
The most basic contribution
has been electronics
and digital computers.
The
Lego
The Laser
the miracle of getting connected by phone, and of motion
pictures. Movies, X-rays, toothpaste – it is miraculous how
many products of civilization that we believe we can not do
without, have enriched our lives in the last century.
Trade fair and Expo organizers,
Here is some advice
to prepare you
for your next Expo
- Create a clear
marketing message
For instance,
Coca-Cola’s campaign
is called:
“Open Happiness”
Coca Cola regularly presents
a corporate pavilion in the World Expos.
Train yourself
and staff
in Booth etiquette
– You have
seconds to create
a first impression.
Here are two ideas for booth design
for a wedding Expo. Focus on creating a soulful space.
Fairs were organized
in the developed and
materially progressed
countries.
They aimed at presenting
technological innovation.
At colonial pavilions
the countries showcased
the exotic production
of their colonies.
The ethnographic culture
of the so called
“primitive people”
were amazingly attractive
for the visitors of the Expo.
Exposition Universelle Paris - 1900)
The Triumph of Art Nouveau
If the Great Exhibition
in the Crystal Palace
marked the pinnacle
of the Industrial era,
the Exposition Universal
reflected the evolution
of the industry
and the decorative arts.
Art Nouveau is defined as
a total art style embracing
architecture,
graphic art, interior design,
and most of the decorative arts
including jewelry, furniture,
textiles, household silver
and other utensils and lighting,
as well as the fine arts.
According to the philosophy of the
style,
art should be a way of life.
Everything should be
beautiful and artistic
– the terraces, the lighting bodies,
the sofas, painted glass everywhere,
where you live,
what you wear.
The Palace Of Electricity
The Palace of electricity was
a pavilion, which provided
the energy for the entire Expo
The 1900 World Fair At Night
In World Expos each country proudly presents
its pavilion in the most artistic of ways.
Each Expo has a theme such as:
“The World of Tomorrow” – NY’s World Fair, 1940
“Peace Through Understanding” – NY’s World Fair
“Progress and Mankind” – Brussels 1958
EXPO THEMES
1851 - The Great Exhibition – Industry of All Nations
1876 - Centennial Exhibition – American Independence
1900 - Paris International – Evaluation of a Century
1910 – Brussels International – Industries
1933 – Chicago – Century of Progress
1964 – New York – Peace Through Understanding
1967 – Montreal – Men and his World
2000 – Expo – Hanover – Humankind, Nature, Technology
2005 – Expo – Aichi – Nature’s Wisdom
2010 – Expo – Shanghai – Better City, Better Life
The goal of a World Expo is
to improve awareness
and find solutions
to universal issues
of our times
such as urbanism
in Expo Shanghai 2010
or nutrition
in Expo Milan 2015.
These issues are
the "theme" of the Expo.
The Great Exhibition
– Industry Of All Nations
It had 6 million visitors
Its cost was 1.65 million dollars
25 countries attended it.
Centennial Exhibition –
American Independence
It had 10 million visitors
Its cost was 8 million dollars
35 countries attended it.
Paris International – Evaluation of a Century
It had 51 million visitors
It’s cost was 19 million dollars
58 countries attended it.
Brussels International Industries
- the Exposition caught on fire!
It had 13 million visitors
It’s cost was 3.5 million dollars
90 countries attended it.
Chicago – Century of Progress
The fair's motto was "Science Finds,
Industry Applies, Man Adapts"
It had 48.6 million visitors
It’s cost was 42.9 million dollars
19 countries attended it.
Peace through understanding…
It had 51 million visitors
58 countries attended it.
Montreal – Man And His World
It had 50 million visitors
62 countries attended it.
Expo Aichi – Nature’s Wisdom
It had 22 million visitors
121 countries attended it.
Expo Shanghai 2010 with 73 visitors
was the most titanic ever organized.
It was called “Better City, Better Life”
Chinese Pavilion was dedicated to “Chinese wisdom in urban
development”, and was named “Oriental Crown.”
.
• China's pavilion alone
would be enough to
understand the
magnitude of the
whole event:
• 160 000 m2
• 69 meters high.
• It was painted in red,
the color of wealth
and happiness in
Chinese culture
In 2020 Dubai says hello to the world’s exhibitors.
Dubai literally sprang out of the desert in the last several decades,
so everything there is a new, fascinating investment.
At daytime it’s the brightest place in the world,
while at night – it looks like a place saying hello from the future.
The BIE was created in 1928.
Its mission is to guarantee the quality of Expos
and protect the rights of their organizers and participants.
Participating Countries
168 countries are member states of the BIE
Visitors
BIE Expo 1851-1930
BIE – 1933-1968
BIE Expo – 1970 -2000
The Future Of Expos:
Predictions of children
for the technologies of the future
“Cars will have
wings and will
be pink,
golden, silver,
purple and
black.”
Sarah
“Poor people
will have houses
and food.
Rich people
will treat them well.”
- Sandy
We have so many problems
that can also be opportunities
A kid in Africa,
with a smart phone
has access to more information
than the President of the U.S.
Full of smiling people, polite people, people with good intentions.
People who govern countries and run businesses.
Talented people
Expo Missions:
World Expos have
a purpose and mission.
First and foremost to facilitate trade
and investment opportunities
To create an environment
of love, live with passion
and make the most exciting
businesses and technologies
come true.
World Fairs are meant
To facilitate the human achievements.
To advertise, to create, to inspire.
They are very concentrated
on human abilities and ideas
and their realization in technologies.
They are focused on human
achievements and human spirit,
The strive for perfection, the battle.
Everything we need is inside.
Thanks for your attention!
