PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
DIGITAL NATIVES

Digital Natives are the children who were born into and raised in the
digital world. As technology is developing and expanding every day,
children and teens are mostly all “native speakers” of the digital
language of computers, video games and the Internet. Instant access of
the internet from many different media platforms (e.g phones, laptops
or tablets) where ever one may be, contributes to it‟s success and
popularity.
Social networking is a powerful source, used by millions of people
each and every day. It consists of popular sites like Facebook, Twitter
and Instagram which allows you to interact with people all around the
World, whether it be posting pictures, exchanging information or
sharing interests and hobbies.
IN RELATION TO MY
MAGAZINE…

I included this in my contents page,
encouraging readers to use social
networking sites to search for „Escape‟ and
keep up with the latest news and reviews.

Again, here I
have
encouraged
readers to visit
our website where
they can see
more, apply for
competitions and subscribe.

I made use of a hash tag on
Twitter meaning that if viewed
by enough people, it can
„trend‟ and be seen by millions
of people all around the
World. This will encourage
others to find the source that
the hash tag is coming from
(which is my magazine), thus
making my magazine more
well known and reaching out
to my secondary audience.
FANDOMS

What is a fandom?
The term “fandom” is used to refer to the collective fans of something such as a
music artist, sport, hobby, or series of books. Typically, the members of a fandom
feel interconnected by their common interests, and a fandom can often be a
subculture as well. Only the most devoted fans are included in a fandom,
separating them from people who may casually enjoy the thing in question.
For example… Directioners = fans of One Direction
Beliebers = fans of Justin Bieber
Sheerios = fans of Ed Sheeran

MAGAZINE…

On my front cover, I have included an
issue number. Only regular readers and
those who have subscribed will have an
understanding of what is included in each
issue. Thus they have

BRAND LOYALTY.
My main featured artist is called Tyger. Her name
represents her fierceness as an artist. Tyger‟s fanbase
would be similar to that of Rihanna (Rihanna Navy) or
Rita Ora (Ritabots) due to their similarities in gender,
age and style.

Tyger‟s fanbase could be known as „cubs‟.
YOUTH SUBCULTURE

A youth subculture is a youth based subculture with distinctive styles, behaviours and
interests. They offer an identity outside of social institutions such as family, work,
home and school.
Common interests, dialects and slang, music genres, social class, ethnicity and gender
can all be important factors.
The study of youth subcultures often consists of looking at symbolic references
attached to clothing, music and other visible affections by the members and how these
symbols are interpreted by those from the dominant culture. For example, those from a
punk subculture tend to wear facial piercings and have colourful mohicans. To those
from the „dominant culture‟, this may seem odd and appear unattractive or scary.

Sub cultures in music consist of hipsters, punks, metalheads and ravers;
all consisting of a community within them with similar tastes.
IN RELATION TO MY
MAGAZINE…

In my magazine, there is not one particular social group being presented. Like discussed
on the previous page, it can be argued that youth subcultures link to music genres as
each community within a fan base of a musical genre (e.g punks, rockers) share similar
interests, tastes and hobbies as a social group does also.

Mainstream:
An individual classed as being „mainstream‟ is one who has the ideas, attitudes, or
activities that are shared by most people and regarded as normal or conventional.
It can be defined as, „the prevailing current of thought, influence, or activity‟.
This group of individuals can act as a suitable audience for my pop magazine and
artist, Tyger as mainstream music denotes music that is familiar to the masses (like
pop music).
Opposing mainstream music is the music of subcultures . This exists in virtually
all genres of music and is found commonly in punk rock, indie rock,
alternative/underground hip hop, anti-folk and heavy metal, among others.
TYGER

My featured pop artist Tyger,
can be compared to the likes of
Rita Ora. They are both
glamorous, keep up to date with
style and are not afraid to start
their own trends.

Tyger would reach out to readers
who share these characteristics,
but also after reading her article
in my magazine and
understanding her background
and experiences, she would
reach out to an audience who
too have been through tough
experiences and aspire to grow
and learn from their mistakes as
she did.
PIC ‘N’ MIX

My other featured band, „Pic „n‟ Mix‟ have a very unique style.
They can be argued to appear alternative, here with
one pairing a smart shirt and chic blazer with a
pair of louboutin trainers and the other in a casual
top with black skinnies and brogues.
Pic „n‟ mix choose songs to cover from all
different genres and make them their own. In my
magazine, they can be seen to be promoting their
own single „deepest darkest secret‟ as they continue
to find their own „sound‟.
Like their quirky style and music, they can reach out to a wider audience, including
individuals from different social groups who are not afraid to show off their
individuality.

  • 1. 2) HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
  • 2. DIGITAL NATIVES Digital Natives are the children who were born into and raised in the digital world. As technology is developing and expanding every day, children and teens are mostly all “native speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet. Instant access of the internet from many different media platforms (e.g phones, laptops or tablets) where ever one may be, contributes to it‟s success and popularity. Social networking is a powerful source, used by millions of people each and every day. It consists of popular sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram which allows you to interact with people all around the World, whether it be posting pictures, exchanging information or sharing interests and hobbies.
  • 3. IN RELATION TO MY MAGAZINE… I included this in my contents page, encouraging readers to use social networking sites to search for „Escape‟ and keep up with the latest news and reviews. Again, here I have encouraged readers to visit our website where they can see more, apply for competitions and subscribe. I made use of a hash tag on Twitter meaning that if viewed by enough people, it can „trend‟ and be seen by millions of people all around the World. This will encourage others to find the source that the hash tag is coming from (which is my magazine), thus making my magazine more well known and reaching out to my secondary audience.
  • 4. FANDOMS What is a fandom? The term “fandom” is used to refer to the collective fans of something such as a music artist, sport, hobby, or series of books. Typically, the members of a fandom feel interconnected by their common interests, and a fandom can often be a subculture as well. Only the most devoted fans are included in a fandom, separating them from people who may casually enjoy the thing in question. For example… Directioners = fans of One Direction Beliebers = fans of Justin Bieber Sheerios = fans of Ed Sheeran
  • 5. IN RELATION TO MY MAGAZINE… On my front cover, I have included an issue number. Only regular readers and those who have subscribed will have an understanding of what is included in each issue. Thus they have BRAND LOYALTY. My main featured artist is called Tyger. Her name represents her fierceness as an artist. Tyger‟s fanbase would be similar to that of Rihanna (Rihanna Navy) or Rita Ora (Ritabots) due to their similarities in gender, age and style. Tyger‟s fanbase could be known as „cubs‟.
  • 6. YOUTH SUBCULTURE A youth subculture is a youth based subculture with distinctive styles, behaviours and interests. They offer an identity outside of social institutions such as family, work, home and school. Common interests, dialects and slang, music genres, social class, ethnicity and gender can all be important factors. The study of youth subcultures often consists of looking at symbolic references attached to clothing, music and other visible affections by the members and how these symbols are interpreted by those from the dominant culture. For example, those from a punk subculture tend to wear facial piercings and have colourful mohicans. To those from the „dominant culture‟, this may seem odd and appear unattractive or scary. Sub cultures in music consist of hipsters, punks, metalheads and ravers; all consisting of a community within them with similar tastes.
  • 7. IN RELATION TO MY MAGAZINE… In my magazine, there is not one particular social group being presented. Like discussed on the previous page, it can be argued that youth subcultures link to music genres as each community within a fan base of a musical genre (e.g punks, rockers) share similar interests, tastes and hobbies as a social group does also. Mainstream: An individual classed as being „mainstream‟ is one who has the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are shared by most people and regarded as normal or conventional. It can be defined as, „the prevailing current of thought, influence, or activity‟. This group of individuals can act as a suitable audience for my pop magazine and artist, Tyger as mainstream music denotes music that is familiar to the masses (like pop music). Opposing mainstream music is the music of subcultures . This exists in virtually all genres of music and is found commonly in punk rock, indie rock, alternative/underground hip hop, anti-folk and heavy metal, among others.
  • 8. TYGER My featured pop artist Tyger, can be compared to the likes of Rita Ora. They are both glamorous, keep up to date with style and are not afraid to start their own trends. Tyger would reach out to readers who share these characteristics, but also after reading her article in my magazine and understanding her background and experiences, she would reach out to an audience who too have been through tough experiences and aspire to grow and learn from their mistakes as she did.
  • 9. PIC ‘N’ MIX My other featured band, „Pic „n‟ Mix‟ have a very unique style. They can be argued to appear alternative, here with one pairing a smart shirt and chic blazer with a pair of louboutin trainers and the other in a casual top with black skinnies and brogues. Pic „n‟ mix choose songs to cover from all different genres and make them their own. In my magazine, they can be seen to be promoting their own single „deepest darkest secret‟ as they continue to find their own „sound‟. Like their quirky style and music, they can reach out to a wider audience, including individuals from different social groups who are not afraid to show off their individuality.
