Coffee the famous hot beverage with the unmistakable aroma and flavor certainly needs no introduction. And, I
would certainly not be alone, but in a majority, when I confess to have multiple cups of the black stuff each and
everyday. In fact coffee consumption has exploded throughout the world and particularly in the western
hemisphere especially in the last decade when many trend setting and swanky coffee shops began appearing on
our high streets. Today, in many, if not majority of western cities and towns you will find multiple coffee shops,
world famous and not so famous, competing side-by-side for customers. Equally, coffee consumption at home
has also increased and replaced other hot beverages such as tea drinking.

A Humble Cup Of Coffee-A Force To Be Reckoned With.
In my opinion, aside from the prime shop locations with large glass frontages that entice passers-by to walk in, the
stroke of genius on the part of successful coffee shop owners was the introduction of large, comfortable sofas and
soft lighting to boot to create a relaxing place. People just felt at home, especially when sunk in leather sofas,
surrounded by friends or work colleagues all relaxing with a mug of hot coffee. It is almost a perfect substitute to
inviting someone home without the hassle of entertaining them. Note the popularity of mother and toddler clubs in
these places which just like home are ideal to exchange gossip.
Relaxing-Just Like Home
These days, coffee drinks come not only hot, but cold too in the form of a frappé. There are dozens of coffee
drinks available amongst which the most famous ones are cappuccino, latte, mocha, espresso and americano. A
cappuccino bought in one shop will taste different from one bought from another because of many factors
including the blend of beans used, the length of time the coffee was exposed to air and the temperature of milk.

Some Popular Coffee Drink Compositions
The largest proponent of coffee in the world directly to general public is Starbucks – the ubiquitous American
global coffee company owned by the Starbucks Corporation and based in Seattle, Washington. Starbucks only
started expanding globally (outside US and Canada) in the mid-1990s and in 2012 boasted 20,366 stores in 61
countries and counting! Although, a Starbucks shop today sells variety of teas, juices, hot and cold sandwiches,
pastries and cakes, there is no doubt that it’s roots are firmly in coffee as it is now synonymous with it having
become part of popular culture as exposed in Hollywood film and television shows countless times. Some
Starbucks also sell books, music CDs and movie DVDs and some with special licence also sell beers and wines
after a certain time in the evening. Here’s an interesting video from Starbucks:
Coffee trees, coffea, which produce the coffee beans are grown in over 70 countries but mainly in equatorial Latin
America, Southern Asia, India and Africa. These are mainly poor, developing countries which possess
disproportionate amount of ecological resources such as the rain forest and animal and plant species that
participate in this ecosystem. It would be relatively easy, one can imagine, to ‘exploit’ these poor farmers for their
coffee crop who in turn would start abusing the planet’s natural resource around them, for instance, by clearing
large swathes of the forest to grow their cash crops, in order to satisfy the demands of their customers. Local and
Government officials in those countries are often corruptible so they would not police that which pays them even
though it would be legally and morally right to do so.

Coffee Tree And Beans
Exploitation of third world farmers and ecosystem would be a major public relations disaster for any company with
global ambitions and for this reason corporations such as Starbucks have a carefully planned and publicized
policy on Community, Ethical Sourcing, Environment and Diversity. Coffee in a sense has become a commodity of
good perhaps even a torchbearer of what good globalization practices can achieve. The humble coffee has come
a long way from an accidental discovery to a valuable global commodity supporting an industry that is spread
throughout the world.
There are a number of stories around on how the coffee bean was discovered for human consumption. The one I
like involves Kaldi the 9th century Ethiopian goat herder who discovered his goats to be particularly excited once
they had eaten the coffee beans from the tree, hence he presumably had to try and see what all the fuss was
about. The first recorded mention or knowledge of coffee is dated 15th century and happened in the sufi
monasteries of Yemen. By 16th century, coffee had spread to North America and Europe. Through its long
history, coffee has variously been politicised and banned but all along enjoyed by people who had access to it.
The popularity of coffee throughout its turbulent history has been underpinned not only by its great taste, but also
its addictive nature and suspected medicinal properties.
Coffee – The Healthy Effects
Thank you goat!
The addictive nature of coffee is because of the substance caffeine-of course. Caffeine is the major constituent of
coffee bean and is psychoactive which means that it is able to cross the normally difficult blood-brain barrier and
exert its effect on the brain as a stimulant. Many healthy effects of coffee have been documented. For instance
drinking coffee:
Reduces All-Cause Mortality – it has been shown that women who drank coffee (optimum of 3 cups a
day) whether caffeinated or decaffeinated reduce their all-cause mortality rate significantly compared to
those who do not. In men this effect was observed if they drank more than 2 cups of coffee a day;
Reduces risk of Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia – it has been found that moderate coffee drinkers
(those who drink 3-5 cups a day), had significantly less chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease and
Dementia later in life compared to those moderate drinkers (drinking 0-2 cups a day);
Reduces risk of Gallstone Disease – including gallstones and gallbladder disease. This effect was only
seen in drinkers who drank caffeinated coffee;
Reduces risk of Parkinson’s disease – a significantly low risk of developing the disease later in life was
found in heavy coffee drinkers;
Increases Cognitive Performance – especially short term memory recall. Studies have also found that
coffee drinking increased various reaction times in various tests. Elderly people, over 80 years old, were
found to perform much better in cognitive tests if they have been coffee drinkers throughout their life;

Improves uptake of Analgesics – caffeine in coffee helps the absorption of pain killers in the gut. So for
those people taking pain killers to ease migrane and headache pain for instance, would be helped
significantly if taken with a cup of coffee;
Increases Antidiabetic activity – coffee drinking has been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus
type 2 by half. The more coffee you have the more it reduces the risk;
Increases Liver Protection – by reducing liver cirrhosis and the most common type of liver cancer that
can follow from cirrhosis;
Reduces some Cancers – such as oral, esophageal, pharyngeal, endometrial, prostate cancer and as
mentioned above the most common form of liver cancer;
Reduces Cardiovascular diseases – moderately;
Increases Antioxidant activity – roasted coffee contains many compounds that have been shown to
reduce oxidative damage by oxygen radicals that are formed naturally and often;
Decreases Dental Cavities – the tannins in coffee have been shown to reduce plaque formation;
Decreases Gout and Blood Pressure – coffee consumption has been shown to decrease these two
conditions.

So, next time you are having that well deserved and delicious cup of coffee remember you are investing in your
future health!
One healthy effect of drinking coffee which is getting an unfair attention in media is the weight loss aspect which
needs further investigation.
Coffee – The Green Bean Extract
Let’s have a quick and dirty recap on how the familiar coffee you have everyday, ends up in your coffee mug. As
you may recall, coffee comes from a tree called caffea. Like any other plant, for its propagation, it has to produce
‘seed’ that is carried by a vector (an animal for instance) away from the seeding plant. In order to attract animals
to ingest its seed, the caffea plant produces bright red cherries within which are its seeds-what we call the coffee
bean-which are raw and green in colour. From here, these beans undergo several processes including roasting
at 475ºF to produce the familiar dark brown aromatic beans which eventually end up in your home in a jar, pouch
or a capsule and thence your coffee mug.
During these processes and in particular during roasting, the chemicals within the coffee bean undergo
transformations: some new ones are formed from reacting with each other and others are destroyed in large
parts. One such chemical that is destroyed in large part is chlorogenic acid which in the case of coffee refers to
modified caffeic acid and quinic acid. Studies done on human subjects suggests that chlorogenic acid in coffee
alters the uptake of glucose from the intestine by reducing it. There will be less glucose in the blood stream as a
result which means the body will start “burning up” fat storage in the body hence reducing weight.
Roasted black coffee bean has less chlorogenic acid due to the heat treatment than unroasted green coffee bean,
hence the exploitation of the green coffee bean extract in weight loss regimes. Effective diet pills such as the
Green Coffee Pure have now been produced which as the name suggest contain pure green coffee bean extract
to reduce weight by utilizing the power of chlorogenic acid. Some users claim to lose weight just by taking the pills
on their own. For instance, this user:
