TOEIC EXPRESS REVIEW FOR
MANAGERS
Part 7: Reading Comprehension
(Single Passages)
Challenges in TOEIC Reading
Part
The passages can be pretty long. There’s no
way I can read them all and still have time to
complete the questions.
Solutions:
 Skim the text to get a general idea of the
content.
 Practice reading texts common to TOEIC
test topics and time yourself.
 Look for key words in the questions and
answer options.
What is the Structure of TOEIC
Part 7 –Reading
Interesting
 Single Passages (7-10)
 Double Passages (4-5)
50 minutes!
Is all you
need to
answer and
complete
TOEIC Part 7
TIP!
Practice reading short texts and time yourself. This
will get you used to reading in a timed situation
and help you read more quickly.
Single Passages
FOR SINGLE PASSAGES
First skim the questions and put in mind the
key words – who/where/what …or nouns,
adjectives, or phrasal verbs …
Reading Strategies
You only need to master two techniques:
SKIM
SCAN
TIP!
Be an efficient reader. Reading every word of a
passage is NOT reading efficiently. Efficient reading
requires skimming and scanning.
Skimming Methods (eye-movement)
Middle section skimming Ruler skimming Zigzag skimming
Absorb the major ideas of the article
Eliminate the areas of the article that are not applicable
How to Skim Read
When you read, you don’t need to read and
understand every word. In fact, to answer
questions in the TOEIC reading sections, you
often do not have to understand all the words.
You just have to find the answers. You don’t have
to understand the answer.

Questions 153-154 refer to the following e-mail
To: Harold Song
From: Kimberly Kent
Subject: Malibu Optical Convention
Date: April 10
Dear Harold,
I am now attaching my presentation for the Malibu Optical Convention next month. As discussed, I’d be very grateful if you
could read it and tell me your thoughts. Especially, I wonder if you could help me make it more succinct, as I am concerned
that it is a little too long. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, please can you double check that the company
logo in page one is in the right format – as you know, I am not good with design!
If you are happy to, could we meet tomorrow or the day after to talk about it? I want to hear your feedback in person.
Afternoons anytime after 2 work for me, so please let me know when would suit you best.
Best,
Kim
153. Why is the woman e-mailing the man?
(A) To inform him of a design change
(B) To arrange a conference
(C) To express gratitude
(D) To help with a presentation
154. What does Ms. Kent ask Mr. Song to do?
(A) Give a presentation on her behalf
(B) Check a proposal
(C) Meet with her one afternoon
(D) Complete a conference schedule
Scanning Method (eye-movement)
How to Scan Read
When you scan, you have a question in mind.
You do not read every word, only key words
that will answer your question.
Scan the reading passage for answers to
questions to which you don’t know the answers.
Practice: Scanning Technique
Questions 160-161 refer to the following article.
Chime Music
Announces Digital Strategy
Chime Music, whose Downtown label hosts some of the best up-and-coming artists in popular music,
announced Friday its plan to invest in digital sales over the coming quarter. Chime, which reported a
significant drop in profits for the third consecutive quarter last month, has had its revenues squeezed by
illegal MP3 downloads and competitors’ more innovative offerings in digital sales. Following its competitors,
Chime will now seek to produce value-added digital content to customers buying albums and singles digitally.
In this way, the company expects to increase sales, and thereby maintain its stable of exciting new artists.
The company’s biggest star, Jessica Saunders, won a record four awards at last month’s Music Association
Awards, and has had three number one hits this year. However, she is also presumed to be the most illegally
downloaded artist, something that Chime aims to address with its new strategy.
160. How does Chime Music plan to raise sales?
(A) By expanding into new countries
(B) By selling electronic content
(C) By attracting the best artists
(D) By selling more albums
161. What is mentioned about Jessica Saunders?
(A) She is the company’s best known artists.
(B) She is the number one musician this year.
(C) She served as a presenter at a ceremony.
(D) She purchased some MP3s.

  1. Solutions: Skim the text to get a general idea of the content. Practice reading texts common to TOEIC test topics and time yourself. Look for key words in the questions and answer options.
  2. Skimming is the process of quickly browsing an article or passage and determining its main theme, interest, and other important information. Skimming is often used to quickly find something of interest (such as a student looking for a key word) or quickly studying something before an exam. Skimming can also be used when reading a newspaper. Often times, people skim the beginning paragraph of an article to determine if it is an interesting read. The main purpose of skimming is to absorb the major ideas of an article while at the same time eliminating the areas of the article that are not applicable to the information being read. In the process of skimming, many people reduce the problem of vocalization due to the fact that you are not giving your mind enough time to carefully pronounce the words as you skim. More importantly, skimming will separate the areas that are important from the jargon that is surrounding them.
