King Midas was granted a wish by the god Dionysus and foolishly wished that everything he touched would turn to gold. His wish was granted but he soon realized that he could not eat or drink as everything turned to gold. Desperate, he asked Dionysus to take away the gift and Dionysus told him to wash in the river Pactolus, which cured him but left the river sands golden for all time.
