This slide show explains how the Ferguson, Mo riots are using locality development. This example shows human capital being used to build social capital.
2. Locality Development
• Creating a foundation focused on influencing issues
within a community
• Uses existing resources (capital) to help increase
other community resources
• Resources/Capital: Human, Financial, Social, Physical
3. Locality Development in Ferguson, MO
• Rev. Al Sharpton coming to Ferguson, MO to speak at a
community meeting demonstrates locality development
because Rev. Sharpton’s human resource of knowledge
and power were used to increase other resources in the
community, such as financial and social resources.
• In an article by author Paula Mejia (2014), she discusses
the impact of Rev. Al Sharpton’s visit to Ferguson. Rev.
Sharpton shared his knowledge (human) to the community
of Ferguson. Rev. Sharpton spoke at the Greater Grace
Church (physical) where community members filled
baskets with donations (financial) for the Brown’s. The
National Urban League announced they would award the
Browns’ three children full college scholarships (financial).
Along with Rev. Sharpton, community members,
protestors, supporters, were all present to honor Michael
Brown (social) (Mejia, 2014).
