This document discusses the difference between performance and proficiency in language learning. Performance refers to using learned vocabulary, grammar, and language in a classroom setting, while proficiency involves spontaneous use of language in real-world situations. An example is given of a student who performs well on a test but struggles to communicate during a restaurant visit. The document then lists domains of language like reading, writing, speaking and listening. It outlines performance targets from novice to advanced levels and tools to achieve performance and proficiency like time, vocabulary, grammar, knowledge transfer and reflection. Students are assigned a research and presentation project on careers where Spanish is in high demand in the US.

practiced in the classroom; vocabulary, grammar structures,
communicative assignments, reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
• What is proficiency?
• Proficiency is the ability to use language in real world situations in a
