Presented at QQML 2013: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries International Conference. Rome, Italy. Academic libraries in the United States typically reference proxy server and/or COUNTER statistics to describe the usage of their electronic resources, but we know that a “use” is arguably more than a resource accessed or downloaded. This article employs social network analysis to bridge the typical ways of talking about usage statistics, to provide a context-specific perspective about the mediated use of electronic resources. The article reports on an analysis of data gathered at the Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles, California) using traditional statistics as well as library reference encounters with patrons during which an electronic resource is mentioned. We use the reference encounters in a social network analysis to examine the relationship between a patron, a librarian, and an electronic resource to more fully describe the use of the resource. This research provides a conceptual model for comparison between traditional COUNTER statistics, proxy server statistics, and the social network analysis perspective. We transform qualitative data into quantitative data in order to develop a grounded theory about the mediated access to library electronic resources.

Besides the Internet search facility and e-mails, social networking is now one of the three best uses of the Internet. A tremendous number of volunteers every day write articles, share photos, videos and links at a scope and scale never imagined before. However, because social network data are huge and come from heterogeneous sources, the data are highly susceptible to inconsistency, redundancy, noise, and loss. For data scientists, preparing the data and getting it into a standard format is critical because the quality of data is going to directly affect the performance of mining algorithms that are going to be applied next. Low-quality data will certainly limit the analysis and lower the quality of mining results. To this end, the goal of this study is to provide an overview of the different phases involved in data preprocessing, with a focus on social network data. As a case study, we will show how we applied preprocessing to the data that we collected for the Malaysian Flight MH370 that disappeared in 2014.

Abstract: The World Wide Web has evolved drastically over the past decade – and the proliferation of Web APIs has turned it into the middleware of choice for most distributed systems. The recent focus on hypermedia-driven APIs together with initiatives such as the Web of Things and Linked Data are now promoting and advancing the development of a new generation of dynamic, open, and long-lived systems on the Web. These systems require agent-based solutions to the point thatWeb researchers have started to build autonomous systems on their own. It is thus both timely and necessary to investigate and align the latest developments in Web research and multi-agent systems (MAS) research. In this paper, we analyze in hindsight the factors that hindered the widespread acceptance of early Web-based MAS. We argue that the answer lies equally in a lack of practical use cases as well as the premature development and alignment of Web and agent technologies. We then present our vision for a new generation of autonomous systems on the Web, which we call hypermedia MAS, together with the research opportunities and challenges they bring. This study focusses on the role of highly active participants in online learning communities on Facebook. These people, often known as “power users” in the literature on social computing, are a common feature of a wide range of online learning groups, and are responsible not only for creating most of the content but also for getting discussion going and providing a basis for other’s participation. We test whether similar dynamics hold true in the context of online learning. Based on a transactional dataset of almost 10,000 interactions with an online community of 32 postgraduate students who were following the same online course, we find evidence that power users also exist in the context of online learning. However, whilst they do create a lot of content, we find that they are not fundamental to keeping the group together, and in fact are less adept at creating content which generates responses than other “normal” users. This suggests that online learning communities may have different dynamics to other types of electronic community: it also suggests that design efforts should not be focused solely on attracting a small core of “power learners”. Rather, diverse types of users are needed for online learning communities to survive and prosper. Authors: Cristóbal Cobo, Center for Research - Ceibal Foundation, Uruguay Monica Bulger, Data & Society Research Institute, United States Jonathan Bright, Oxford Internet Institute, United Kingdom Ryan den Rooijen, Oxford Internet Institute, United Kingdom Presented at the LINC Conference (MIT, 2016) Digital Inclusion: Transforming Education through Technology.

Given at EDUCUASE ELI16 In 2012, Duke University's Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) began experimenting with MOOCs with an interest in both open education and campus impact. Today, faculty are increasingly interested in content mashups and technology integrations that go far beyond the average course site. Presenters share how CIT evaluates technology tools and platforms to meet faculty needs, maps the Duke learning technology ecosystem, and tests new technologies for fit. In this presentation I discuss the methods and applications used, the results of Canvas and Open edX testing (summer 2015) and an Open edX pilot (spring 2016), and the values shaping the ecosystem moving forward. OUTCOMES: -Compare learning ecosystems, needs, and aspirations among session participants -Identify strategies for visualizing a learning ecosystem -Assess methods and applications for evaluating technology platforms

In the thrilling conclusion to 2023, ransomware groups had a banner year, really outdoing themselves in the "make everyone's life miserable" department. LockBit 3.0 took gold in the hacking olympics, followed by the plucky upstarts Clop and ALPHV/BlackCat. Apparently, 48% of organizations were feeling left out and decided to get in on the cyber attack action. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category. Bitcoins were the currency of choice for discerning hackers, because who doesn't love untraceable money?

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
