CLASS DESCRIPTIONS & TERM THREE OVERVIEW
We encourage anyone who is working for community development in political parties, labour
movements/institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGO) or civil society
organizations (CSO) to apply. Members of international NGOs are not eligible. iPACE hopes
to attract participants who will use what they learn in the courses in their work and
organizations to promote positive democratic change.

Below is a list of course descriptions and who the course is intended for:

Education Track
1. NEW: Pluralism and Citizenship: This course will explore concepts of social and
cultural pluralism (racial, ethnic, physical, and religious), and how they are different
from diversity and how it is the critical foundation of the protection of human rights,
citizenship and democratic development. The course will also explore tools and
pluralistic mechanisms for civil society engagement and how pluralism can be used to
mitigate social risks in democratic development. The Pluralism & Citizenship course
is designed by Jena Karim, World Learning’s Technical Advisor for Civil Society and
Governance.
The Pluralism and Citizenship course is perfect for civic and political leaders seeking
a greater understand of cultural pluralism to enhance their own peace-building,
tolerance-building, or other inter-cultural activities.

2. NEW: Voter Education: The Voter Education course will cover election
terminology, electoral system and constituencies, electoral complaints and
adjudication processes, voter registration, as well as select civic education
components (i.e. good governance, governing actors and institutions, constitutional
mandate of the election commission). The course will focus on Myanmar’s electoral
frameworks, drawing upon international standards and examples as needed. The
course will be developed by an international voter education expert, to be determined.
The course is ideal for participants looking to become involved in “get out the vote”
activities or other voter education activities within their own organizations.

3. Conflict Transformation: This class will examine issues of peace building and
reconciliation, human rights with an emphasis on the rights of minority groups,
women, and persons with disabilities, religious tolerance. It will focus on legal
frameworks as well as community-driven activities to promote tangible peace
building. Course designed by Lerio Caseria Latumbo, School of International
Training.
The course is designed for human and civil rights defenders, civic educators,
organizational leaders, and advocates who want a stronger understanding of conflict.

1. NEW: Training of Trainers (ToT) for Civic Educators: This training of trainers
(ToT) course for civic educators, designed to allow students to learn effective
pedagogy to aid in the implementation of their own civic education courses when
using iPACE or other materials. The ToT for civic educators will borrow from World
Learning's extensive Master ToT and QuiLT programs implemented at the American
Center, Yangon. The ToT content will be adapted to address the unique needs of
civic educators. Course designed by Sai Aung Thein, iPACE Advocacy & Training
Advisor.
Training of Trainers (ToT) for Civic Educators is designed for trainers and civic
leaders seeking to implement their own civic or political education programs.

iPACE 2014 Application: Term 3 10
2. English for Special Purposes: This class will assist students to communicate about
civic education in English, including topics related to political systems,
constitutionalism, and advocacy. The class will help develop students’ English
vocabulary and communication abilities around these issues to communicate with
donors and the wider international audience.
English for Special Purposes is designed for students who maintain a strong level of
English conversation skills.

  • 7. iPACE 2014 Application: Term 3 7 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS & TERM THREE OVERVIEW We encourage anyone who is working for community development in political parties, labour movements/institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGO) or civil society organizations (CSO) to apply. Members of international NGOs are not eligible. iPACE hopes to attract participants who will use what they learn in the courses in their work and organizations to promote positive democratic change. / ( ) ၀ ( ) iPACE Term 3, 2014 Below is a list of course descriptions and who the course is intended for: ၄ Education Track 1. NEW: Pluralism and Citizenship: This course will explore concepts of social and cultural pluralism (racial, ethnic, physical, and religious), and how they are different from diversity and how it is the critical foundation of the protection of human rights, citizenship and democratic development. The course will also explore tools and pluralistic mechanisms for civil society engagement and how pluralism can be used to mitigate social risks in democratic development. The Pluralism & Citizenship course is designed by Jena Karim, World Learning’s Technical Advisor for Civil Society and Governance. The Pluralism and Citizenship course is perfect for civic and political leaders seeking a greater understand of cultural pluralism to enhance their own peace-building, tolerance-building, or other inter-cultural activities.   • 8. iPACE 2014 Application: Term 3 8 World Learning Civil Society and Governance Jena Karim ( ) 2. NEW: Voter Education: The Voter Education course will cover election terminology, electoral system and constituencies, electoral complaints and adjudication processes, voter registration, as well as select civic education components (i.e. good governance, governing actors and institutions, constitutional mandate of the election commission). The course will focus on Myanmar’s electoral frameworks, drawing upon international standards and examples as needed. The course will be developed by an international voter education expert, to be determined. The course is ideal for participants looking to become involved in “get out the vote” activities or other voter education activities within their own organizations. Voter Education ( ) ၄ ( ) 3. Conflict Transformation: This class will examine issues of peace building and reconciliation, human rights with an emphasis on the rights of minority groups, women, and persons with disabilities, religious tolerance. It will focus on legal frameworks as well as community-driven activities to promote tangible peace building. Course designed by Lerio Caseria Latumbo, School of International Training. The course is designed for human and civil rights defenders, civic educators, organizational leaders, and advocates who want a stronger understanding of conflict.

NEW: Training of Trainers (ToT) for Civic Educators: This training of trainers (ToT) course for civic educators, designed to allow students to learn effective pedagogy to aid in the implementation of their own civic education courses when using iPACE or other materials. The ToT for civic educators will borrow from World Learning's extensive Master ToT and QuiLT programs implemented at the American Center, Yangon. The ToT content will be adapted to address the unique needs of civic educators. Course designed by Sai Aung Thein, iPACE Advocacy & Training Advisor. English for Special Purposes: This class will assist students to communicate about civic education in English, including topics related to political systems, constitutionalism, and advocacy. The class will help develop students’ English vocabulary and communication abilities around these issues to communicate with donors and the wider international audience.
