                                                        1
Lesson 3: Verb Tenses

The tense of a verb tells WHEN something happens.

1. A verb in the present tense tells that something is happening now.

    Keith explores the caves.

2. A verb in the past tense shows that something has already
happened.

Yesterday Johnny went swimming in the lake.

3. A verb in the future tense shows that something is going to happen.

Tomorrow Jenny is going to the park with her friends.

                                                                         2
Underline the verb in each sentence. Label the verb past, present, or future.

A verb must agree with its subject. A singular subject takes a
singular verb. A plural subject takes a plural verb.

Singular: Julie likes poetry about nature.
