Breadth : for example, students will take four units outside their main area of study, including a focus on global and cultural issues. This means they can sample various kinds of knowledge, keeping options open for future study while also being better prepared to move directly into the workforce.
UWA New Courses 2012 As noted previously, our three-year undergraduate degrees will share a common structure: Every student will be required to complete one area of specialisation: the ‘degree-specific’ major. This will be a structured sequence of eight units, from first-year to third-year level, designed to provide in-depth exploration of an area of knowledge. If a student is completing a Bachelor of Arts, the degree-specific major will be drawn from one of the majors within the BA. Each of the other three-year undergraduate degrees has its own list of degree-specific majors. Students will also have the option of completing a second major, from either a related field of study or an area quite different to their degree-specific major. Some degree-specific majors will specify ‘complementary units’ (up to four units) which are required if the major is being taken as a student’s degree-specific major, but are not required if the major is being taken as a second major. Students will also be required to take four ‘broadening units’ in subject areas outside their degree-specific major area. One of the broadening units must be drawn from a list of units that address global issues from a variety of perspectives. Having a standard structure in our undergraduate degrees should mean it will be easier to arrange overseas study experiences during the course of the degree. At the moment, studying overseas for one or two semesters is easier in some degrees than in others. It will also be possible for students to take an optional 4 th year of study, to complete an Honours project related to one of their majors. In an Honours project, the student explores an issue in even greater depth, under the guidance of an experienced academic staff member.
