2. Raster Graphics
Raster graphics are made up of bitmaps, which
are graphics made up of pixels. if you resize
these images they will become distorted and
the pixels will become more visible. there are
many of files in which raster graphics are stored
in for example JPEG.
3. Vector Graphics
Vector graphics are made up of vectors, which
are lines and strokes that go along a path of
points. Unlike raster graphics, these images can
be resized without becoming distorted meaning
that no definition is lost when resizing.
5. JPEG
Stands For Joint Photographic Experts Group
Used For/Example They are used for photographs and
web images.
Advantage These files can be opened by mostly
all programs.
Disadvantage The lose quality when edited due to
compression.
6. TIFF
Stands For Tagged Image File Format
Used For/Example They are mostly used with graphic
designers. Used in Adobe InDesign.
Advantage Do not lose quality due to
compression.
Disadvantage Not many programs open TIFF files
and the files also become really large.
7. GIF
Stands For Graphics Interchange Format
Used For/Example Used to produce short digital
animations which are mostly seen on
the internet.
Advantage They can create the look of a video
and have a small file size.
Disadvantage Cannot be used in all parts of the
internet, some browsers do not support
GIF files.
8. BMP
Stands For Bitmap image file
Used For/Example A BMP file is similar to a TIFF and
JPEG, used for images.
Advantage There is no loss in compression when
editing.
Disadvantage These files take up a lot of space.
10. PSD
Stands For Photoshop Document
Used For/Example Used in image manipulation.
Advantage The images save layers and formatting
information meaning if you want to go
back and change anything you can
easily do that.
Disadvantage These PSD files become very large
and also can only be opened in
Photoshop.
11. AI
Stands For Adobe Illustrator
Used For/Example Used in logo creation.
Advantage As these are vector graphics they can
be resized and not lose quality or
become distorted.
Disadvantage These files can only be opened in that
program and they have really large file
sizes.
12. FLA
Stands For Flash File
Used For/Example Used in game and animation creation.
Advantage These files only have a small file size
but produce really high quality
graphics, they can also include sound
and video.
Disadvantage The FLA format does not fun on the
web.
13. WMF
Stands For Windows Metafile
Used For/Example These files are similar to AI files and
are used in clip art, often used in logos.
Advantage Can be resized as vector graphics will
not lose quality and can contain vector
and bitmap components.
Disadvantage They have become uncommon as they
are not used much anymore.
15. Compression
Definition The reducing in the files size by
reducing how much information is
saved.
Advantage File sizes become smaller so the
images become easier to upload,
download and view.
Disadvantage Quality is lost, but people often
compress their images on purpose to
ensure quality is lost before putting
them on the web to reduce the amount
of people that will steal and try and use
that photo as their own.
16. Image Capture
Method Scanner
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
Scanners can scan image, documents
and other media products. It then
creates a digital image for you to
access it on a computer.
Method Camera
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A camera can take images and save
them for you to use at a later time.
Method Graphics Tablet
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
can use the mouse like a pen to create
images easier to draw as you have
better control over what you are doing.
17. Optimising
Why would you optimise? optimising is the process in which takes
place to make images a smaller file
size. Images are optimised usually to
make them easier to access on the
internet as a smaller file size will
download quicker.
How can you optimise? Photoshop provides processes of
optimising by changing ‘image size’.
Advantage to optimising Files become smaller making them
easier to upload and download and
also they become easier to view when
on the web as the small size will load
faster.
Disadvantage to optimising Resolution will be lowered meaning the
image will not keep its original quality.
